Costco says the incentive can be combined with eligible manufacturer incentives, but its terms say it may not be combined with the Dealership Sales Program. Volkswagen’s 2026 Atlas Cross Sport page separately says the Costco incentive stacks with Volkswagen discounts for which the member qualifies. Do not assume that every advertised discount can be combined: ask the dealer to identify each incentive on the written buyer’s order and verify that the exact combination is allowed for your vehicle and transaction.
The difference between the two membership tiers is the listed Costco incentive amount; it does not tell you what the dealer’s vehicle selling price should be. Nor does the $1,250 or $1,000 figure represent a guaranteed reduction from every dealer’s sticker price. Costco Auto Program characterizes its approach as taking negotiation out of the buying process through prearranged pricing from approved dealers, with member advocacy support. That description explains the service, but it is not independent proof that any one quote is the lowest price. The member-specific price sheet and a dealer’s itemized written offer are the documents to inspect. Ask what vehicle the sheet covers, whether the figure is before or after incentives, and whether the dealer has added equipment or fees that are not part of the stated vehicle price.
When you request the price sheet, have the vehicle details ready: model year, model, trim, drivetrain, and factory options if known. If you have a specific VIN in mind, provide it or ask whether the sheet can be tied to that vehicle. If you are open to more than one trim or dealer, keep the price sheets separate. Otherwise a comparison can quietly become a comparison between different equipment rather than different prices for the same SUV.
Build a valid comparison before judging the price
Match the vehicle, not just the model name
Ask each dealer to quote the same model year, model, trim, drivetrain, factory options, and dealer-installed equipment. If a dealer has assigned a vehicle identification number (VIN), use it to make sure the offers refer to the same vehicle. An advertised starting price for a base trim cannot be compared fairly with a quote for a more highly equipped SUV. Differences in accessories or equipment can also change what looks like the selling price.
Matching the VIN is the clearest way to avoid configuration drift when one vehicle has already been identified. If the dealers are quoting different VINs, compare the equipment lists and make the differences explicit. Record factory-installed options separately from dealer-installed accessories, because the latter may appear as additional charges in the buyer’s order. Do not let a broad label such as “Atlas” or “Tiguan” stand in for trim and equipment details.

Get the price in writing and itemized
Request the Costco Member-Only Price Sheet and an itemized buyer’s order or out-the-door quote. Ask for the selling price before incentives and a separate line for every manufacturer incentive and the Costco incentive. The quote should also identify dealer-installed accessories or add-ons, documentation and other dealer fees, taxes, and title and registration charges. Ask which accessories or add-ons are required and which you may decline; do not treat a bundled price as directly comparable until you understand what it includes.
A verbal assurance that the dealer “will honor Costco pricing” does not show how the price was calculated. Ask the dealer to put the terms and the exact vehicle in writing. If an incentive depends on a particular membership tier, certificate, code, or buyer qualification, have that condition stated clearly. A written quote also makes it easier to spot a missing discount, a fee that appears in only one offer, or an accessory that has been included in one vehicle’s price but not another’s.
Request the quote in a form that lets you follow the arithmetic from vehicle price to final total. If a dealer gives you only a monthly payment, ask for the selling price and the complete line-item breakdown too. For a purchase, the out-the-door amount is the more useful overall comparison than a headline price that may exclude taxes, registration, or other charges. For a lease, the payment alone is also incomplete; compare the entire structure described below.

A useful comparison puts each offer on the same vehicle configuration, transaction type, date, and fee assumptions. For a cash or financed purchase, compare the total amount payable under the same assumptions—not a headline discount or a price that excludes required charges. Taxes and registration costs can vary with location, so keep them visible rather than assuming that a dealer’s advertised price includes them.
Keep purchase comparisons separate from lease comparisons. A purchase quote and a lease quote answer different questions, even if both mention the Costco incentive. If you are comparing financed purchases, make sure the vehicle price and incentives are shown separately from loan terms. A monthly amount can be affected by factors beyond the vehicle’s selling price; do not use it to infer that one vehicle is cheaper without seeing the underlying figures and assumptions.
Use the same date or as close to the same date as practical when you collect quotes. Promotions, availability, and dealer prices can change. Write down when each offer was received and any expiration date on the quote. If an offer expires, an incentive changes, or the vehicle is no longer available, request an updated written quote rather than comparing current terms with a stale figure.

Copy these rows into a worksheet for each dealer. Enter each dealer’s actual written figure and eligibility terms; the categories below are comparison prompts, not published price estimates.

Then check the arithmetic: start with the selling price, account for each incentive you actually qualify for, and add the quoted accessories, fees, taxes, and registration/title charges. If a dealer’s total cannot be reconciled with its line items, ask for a corrected buyer’s order before comparing. Keep any conditional incentive separate until the dealer confirms your eligibility in writing.

Use a consistent order in your worksheet: establish the vehicle’s selling price first, subtract only the Costco and manufacturer incentives the buyer is confirmed to receive, and then account for accessories, fees, taxes, and title and registration charges as they are itemized. Dealers may present the order differently, so the point is not to impose a universal format; it is to make each included charge and credit visible. If the same charge is already included in a quoted total, do not add it a second time.
Ask follow-up questions wherever a line is vague. “Accessories” should be broken into specific items and prices; “dealer fees” should be itemized; “rebate” or “discount” should be identified by name and qualification rules. If the dealer says a charge is required, ask whether it is required for the particular vehicle or transaction and whether the same item appears in the other quote. The aim is to compare the offers as written, not to assume that similarly named line items mean the same thing.
For example, if one quote shows a lower vehicle selling price but also includes dealer-installed equipment and fees not present on another quote, compare the complete totals after clarifying the items. Likewise, a quote with a larger advertised discount may still have a different final amount once add-ons, taxes, title, and registration are included. No single line is enough to declare a winner unless the rest of the transaction is comparable.
Compare leases on more than the monthly payment
A lower monthly payment does not necessarily mean a lower-cost or equivalent lease. Ask each dealer for the complete lease structure and compare the same term and mileage allowance. Record:
- Amount due at signing and what it includes
- Number and amount of monthly payments
- Lease term and annual mileage allowance
- Acquisition and disposition fees
- End-of-lease conditions and charges
Also confirm how the Costco incentive is applied to the particular lease and whether the quoted due-at-signing amount already includes it. Official offer materials do not establish a universally comparable monthly payment; only full local lease terms let you compare offers on equal footing.
When you line up lease offers, make sure the amount due at signing is not concealing a difference in upfront charges or credits. Confirm the number of payments, the length of the lease, and the mileage allowance, then compare acquisition and disposition fees and the end-of-lease conditions. A payment should not be called “better” simply because it is lower if the competing offer has a different term, mileage allowance, or amount due at signing.
Ask the dealer to show whether the Costco incentive reduces the lease amount, is reflected in another part of the quote, or is not applicable to the particular arrangement. Do not assume that the purchase treatment automatically carries over to a lease. The current Costco promotion says qualifying purchases or leases are covered, but the local written lease offer still needs to show how the particular incentive and any other discounts are applied.
Verify that each discount applies to you and this transaction
- Confirm the membership condition. The listed offer requires Costco membership by September 17, 2026, and the incentive amount depends on membership tier.
- Register by the deadline. Obtain the certificate and unique promotion code through the Costco Auto Program by January 4, 2027.
- Check the vehicle and dealer. Make sure the SUV is an eligible new 2026 model, the dealer participates, and the quoted vehicle is available under the offer.
- Present the certificate or code. Confirm the dealer has applied it to the written quote rather than merely referring to a Costco price verbally.
- Confirm delivery timing. Costco’s listed terms require delivery during the promotion period, which ends January 4, 2027.
- Audit incentive compatibility. Ask the dealer to show the Costco incentive and every manufacturer discount separately, confirm your eligibility for each, and resolve any conflict with the Dealership Sales Program terms before signing.
Promotions and inventory can change. Check Costco’s current Volkswagen offer terms and the dealer’s written terms close to the time you commit; save dated copies of each quote and note any expiration date.

The certificate is buyer-specific: Costco’s listed terms say its code is not transferable and cannot be redeemed for cash. Registering for a certificate is therefore not the same as confirming that every vehicle or transaction qualifies. Make sure the name, membership tier, code, model year, participating dealer, and delivery date all line up with the applicable terms. There are two compatibility questions to resolve rather than one. First, confirm that the buyer qualifies for each manufacturer discount shown on the order. Second, confirm that the Costco offer permits the combination being used. Costco says actual savings vary by vehicle, dealer, and location. That is why an advertised incentive cannot be converted into a universal savings estimate. The official offer pages do not provide a personalized local member price, a typical savings figure, or a dataset of completed transactions against which to rate your quote. Your local written alternatives are the evidence needed to assess market competitiveness.
A practical conclusion can be precise without inventing a magic cutoff: the Costco offer is useful if you qualify for it and the final written transaction is favorable relative to a comparable local quote. If one offer is lower only because it leaves out a charge or uses a different configuration, the comparison is not complete. If the totals are close, check whether differences in equipment, add-ons, fees, delivery availability, or lease structure explain the gap before deciding.
