The most reliable way to check a used Tata Punch EV’s battery health is to have a Tata EV authorised service centre inspect the vehicle’s high-voltage battery State of Health (SoH) and provide the result in writing. Match the report to the car’s VIN and odometer, review its service and ownership history, and ask Tata to confirm the remaining warranty for that specific vehicle before paying. Dashboard range and a short test drive cannot establish battery health.
Arrange a VIN-specific battery SoH inspection
Tata’s Punch.ev owner’s manual says battery capacity naturally declines with time and use, and directs owners to contact a Tata EV Authorised Service Centre for a battery-pack SoH inspection when capacity or range degrades. Ask the seller to cooperate with an appointment at an authorised centre and confirm beforehand whether it can inspect the car before sale and provide a written SoH result with diagnostic notes. The manual does not specify a standard report format, test procedure or fee, so ask the centre what the inspection includes.

When you receive the result, check that the VIN and odometer reading match the vehicle and sale documents. Ask what the SoH figure represents, when it was measured, and whether the centre has noted faults, cell or pack concerns, or previous high-voltage battery work. Do not treat an unverified generic scanner or phone-app reading as a definitive SoH result; Tata’s manual does not validate those tools for this purpose. Verify service, registration and ownership records
- Ask for dated service invoices and records of battery, battery-management system (BMS), charging or powertrain work.
- Compare recorded odometer readings over time and confirm the first-registration date and ownership-transfer dates.
- Make sure the inspection result identifies the same vehicle you are buying, using its VIN.
These details matter for both the car’s history and warranty eligibility. Tata’s current warranty summary says the stated second-registration coverage is calculated from the first registration date and mileage. Tata’s HV battery warranty summary.

Ask about warning signs and impact history
Ask whether the car has had sudden charge-percentage drops, unexpected range loss, warning lamps, overheating or charging interruptions. Also ask about collisions and underbody impacts. These are points to investigate, not proof of a battery defect. The owner’s manual directs owners to an authorised service centre for an HV battery check after a collision that may have damaged or disconnected it. Never touch, open or attempt to repair the high-voltage battery.
Use a drive and charge session as supporting evidence
If practical, observe a charge session and take a representative drive. Note the displayed state of charge (SoC), any charging interruptions or warnings, and energy use. Record conditions such as ambient temperature, route, speed, climate-control use and passenger or cargo load: they affect observed range. Tata’s manual also notes that temperature affects battery capacity and that calibration and cell balancing occur during charging, particularly above 90%. One atypical session or short drive cannot establish pack health, so use these observations alongside the authorised inspection and records—not instead of them. Confirm the remaining HV battery warranty for this car
Tata’s current published summary lists Punch.ev 40 second-registration HV battery coverage as 8 years or 1.6 lakh km, whichever occurs first, with both limits calculated from the vehicle’s first registration. It says a second or later owner must notify Tata of the ownership transfer for the stated lifetime HV battery warranty to apply. Eligibility is also subject to registration and usage conditions, and the page directs owners to the relevant manual for full terms.
Those published terms identify Punch.ev 40; do not assume they apply unchanged to another variant, model year or use. Before agreeing a price, ask Tata to confirm in writing, against the VIN, the applicable warranty terms, remaining time and distance, registration category, transfer-notification status and any relevant exclusions or service-history issues. Understand the 70% SoH warranty condition
Tata’s summary describes a warranty condition for the HV battery falling below 70% of nominal-energy SoH during the warranty period. That is a warranty threshold, not a recommended minimum for buying a used car: a battery at or above 70% is not automatically a good purchase, and a battery below the threshold does not automatically qualify for a repair or replacement without meeting the warranty terms. The summary says Tata decides whether to repair or replace the battery and describes a post-repair or replacement capacity target of the pre-repair steady-state SoH or 80%, whichever is higher. - Charging or driving symptoms observed under comparable conditions
What not to use as a battery-health verdict
- Dashboard range: It is an estimate affected by driving, temperature, HVAC use, route and load. Gradual capacity and range decline with age and use is expected; range alone is not a battery-health report.
- A single test drive or charge: It may reveal symptoms worth investigating, but cannot establish pack health. Charging calibration and balancing, temperature and driving conditions can influence what you observe.
- An unverified generic scanner reading: The cited owner’s manual recommends authorised-service SoH inspection but does not establish that a generic OBD scanner or app can measure Punch EV battery health reliably.
