Before buying a used Nissan Titan, check its frame and underbody closely, road-test the transmission from cold through normal driving, and look for driveline leaks, noises, and vibration. These checks can flag reasons to pause, but they cannot establish structural safety or diagnose a transmission fault on their own. Ask for the truck’s VIN and service records, verify any open recall by VIN, and arrange an independent lift inspection if anything looks or feels questionable.
Before you inspect the truck
- Ask the seller for the VIN, service receipts, prior inspection reports, and where the truck has spent winters. Ask whether it regularly towed or hauled heavy loads. These details help you judge what to inspect and which service schedule applies; they do not prove a defect.
- Check recall status using the VIN. NHTSA campaign 22V-671 covered certain 2020–2023 Titans, but model year alone cannot determine whether a truck is included or whether the remedy is complete. Confirm applicability and completed work with NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup or Nissan, and ask for repair documentation. See the NHTSA campaign information.
- Use the owner’s manual and maintenance schedule for the exact model year and configuration. Requirements can differ by year, drivetrain, and standard versus severe use. Nissan’s maintenance schedule lookup can help identify applicable service items.
How to check the frame and underbody for rust
Inspect in daylight and, ideally, have the truck raised on a lift. Never crawl beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack. A flashlight helps reveal areas hidden by the fuel tank, exhaust, or boxed frame sections.
Where to look
- Trace the frame rails and inspect accessible openings in boxed sections.
- Examine weld seams, crossmembers, body mounts, suspension mounts, and the areas around them for rust, cracks, distortion, or signs of repair.
- Look beyond the frame: check the floor pan, fuel and brake lines, and exhaust. Nissan’s 2019 Titan Owner’s Manual warns that corrosive road substances can cause rust in these areas and advises rinsing mud and dirt from the underbody after winter. The manual states, “It is very important to remove these substances from the underbody, otherwise rust may form on the floor pan, frame, fuel lines and exhaust system.” Read the 2019 Titan Owner’s Manual.
What the surface can—and cannot—tell you
Light surface oxidation is different from heavy scaling, flaking, perforation, cracks, bent rails, separated mounts, or substantial material loss. Pay particular attention to fresh undercoating in isolated areas, mismatched coatings, or non-factory welds; these may warrant questions about prior damage or repair. A clean-looking surface does not prove the frame is sound, especially where sections are concealed. If you find a suspect area or cannot see it properly, make a professional lift inspection a condition of purchase. How to screen the transmission on a road test
When possible, arrange to see the Titan before it has been driven that day so you can observe cold operation. Note warning lamps before starting, then check whether the transmission engages forward and reverse without a substantial unexplained delay or impact.

- Start gently and confirm that engagement feels consistent.
- Drive through ordinary acceleration and steady cruising, then decelerate at safe speeds. Notice harsh or inconsistent shifts, hesitation, slipping, or engine-speed flare without matching acceleration.
- Listen for an unusual whine and watch for warning lights during the drive.
- If you notice concerning behavior, ask a qualified shop to diagnose it with appropriate checks before deciding to buy. Symptoms are screening clues, not proof of a particular fault.
Request transmission service records and compare them with the schedule for the truck’s year and configuration. Nissan lists automatic transmission fluid among Titan service items, with recommendations that vary by use. Do not apply an interval from one model year to every Titan; check the schedule for the specific vehicle.
How to check the rest of the drivetrain
A transmission check is only one part of the inspection. Look for fluid leaks at the transmission, axles, differential, and transfer case. Where visible, check boots for splits or grease loss and inspect shaft joints and supports for damage or looseness.

During the drive, listen and feel for clunks when shifting between drive and reverse, humming that changes with road speed, vibration under acceleration, or binding in turns. Test four-wheel drive only as the owner’s manual directs and in suitable conditions; do not engage it in a way the manual prohibits.
Ask the mechanic conducting a pre-purchase inspection to check the propeller shaft, differential and transfer-case fluids, axle and suspension parts, and drive-shaft boots on four-wheel-drive models. Nissan identifies these systems in its 2024 Titan maintenance schedule and 2024 Titan Owner’s Manual. Use the documents for the truck’s own model year when determining applicable service.

When to get an independent inspection
A lift inspection is especially important if you find significant scaling, possible perforation, cracks, bent or repaired frame sections, fresh coating that obscures the metal, fluid leaks, or driveline noises or vibration. It is also useful when key areas are hidden or the seller cannot provide convincing service records. Ask the mechanic to document findings and distinguish cosmetic corrosion from structural concerns. A driveway look and short test drive cannot settle every question about concealed rust or internal mechanical condition.

- Condition of the driveline and suspension, including leaks or abnormal noises and vibration.
- VIN-specific recall status and documentation of any completed remedy.
- Verifiable maintenance history, considered alongside the truck’s use.
A documented inspection or repair provides a firmer basis for comparison than an unsupported assurance. No single symptom establishes that every Titan—or even the particular truck you are viewing—has a defect; base the decision on its VIN, records, observed condition, and a qualified inspection.
