The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that a so-called universal charger may fit a micromobility product but still be incompatible. In other words, do not decide that a charger is safe just because its connector fits, its packaging says “e-scooter,” or a seller lists many brands. The key question is whether the scooter manufacturer confirms that charger for the exact scooter model. If you cannot verify that, do not use it.

If you have the original charger
Use the charger supplied with the scooter and follow the scooter and battery manufacturers’ instructions for charging and maintenance. The CPSC micromobility guidance recommends using the charger that came with the product or one recommended by its manufacturer. Check the manual for the model-specific charging process and expected charge time rather than assuming that instructions for another scooter apply.
Before charging, make sure the charger is the one intended for your scooter and is in usable condition. If it is damaged, do not continue using it or improvise a repair. Ask the scooter manufacturer or an authorized service channel what to do next. A charger that looks similar or carries a familiar brand name is not a substitute for confirmation of compatibility.
If the charger is missing or damaged
Contact the scooter manufacturer or an authorized service channel to identify a replacement tested and approved for your scooter’s exact make and model. Do not rely on a matching plug, a broad “e-scooter” or “universal” label, or a seller’s claim that a charger works with many devices. If the manufacturer cannot confirm a proposed replacement, do not use it.
If the battery pack itself needs replacement, use only a pack confirmed suitable for that scooter and tested or approved for it; do not substitute a generic pack, reused cells, or a modified battery. A battery pack is not a good place to experiment with parts from another product. Ask the manufacturer for the appropriate replacement or service route.

The scale of the concern is worth understanding without overstating it: the CPSC reported 156 fire and thermal incidents involving “universal” chargers for micromobility products between January 1, 2023, and May 16, 2024. Charge in a safer place and stay nearby
Safe charging is about more than the charger. Choose a location where people can leave quickly if there is a problem, keep combustible items away, and remain close enough to notice abnormal heat, smell, sounds, or charging behavior. These precautions do not replace the scooter manual; they address the risks that apply across models.

- Choose the location before plugging in. Charge where a fire would not block an exit or trap people. Keep the scooter and charger away from flammable or combustible materials. - Remain present and awake. Do not charge while you are asleep or away from home. Stay nearby so you can respond if something looks or sounds abnormal.

Think of supervision as a practical safety measure, not a promise that a problem will always be visible in time. Store the scooter safely between rides
Choose a place that is dry and away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and excessive cold. Keep the scooter and battery away from combustible materials. Avoid storing it where a fire could block an exit, and do not charge it on an escape route. The UK Department for Transport recommends a separate shed or garage where practical; if you store or charge the scooter indoors, keep suitable fire detection in place.
Storage location is part of battery safety because a problem should not be made worse by extreme environmental conditions or by blocking the way out of a home. Avoid damp areas as well as locations that are too hot or too cold. Do not leave the scooter in direct sun or beside materials that could readily burn. The same thinking applies when the scooter is parked between short rides: keep it somewhere people can exit safely and where it is not surrounded by combustible items.

For seasonal storage or another long break
Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the scooter and battery to determine how to prepare the battery, how often it needs charging during non-use, and when to check it. CPSC specifically advises following the manufacturer’s guidance on charging frequency during storage. Before putting the scooter away for a long period, consult both the scooter manual and any battery instructions. If the instructions say to charge periodically during storage, use the frequency they specify and supervise each charge as you would during regular use. Do not assume that every battery should be stored fully charged, partly charged, or topped up on the same schedule. If you cannot find the guidance, contact the manufacturer rather than borrowing a storage percentage or interval from an online post about a different model.
Check on a stored scooter according to the maker’s directions. If you notice swelling, leakage, an unusual smell, or another warning sign, do not start charging it to see whether it still works. Stop using it and seek manufacturer or qualified service advice. Keep the storage area clear of exit routes throughout the period the scooter is not in use.
Why charger compatibility and surroundings matter
Lithium-ion batteries can fail for several reasons, including manufacturing defects, operation outside rated temperature conditions, electrical abuse, or mechanical damage. In a multi-cell battery pack, a failure can trigger thermal runaway that spreads to other cells. This is why the basic advice—use the right charger, avoid harsh environmental conditions, and stop when the battery shows signs of damage—is more than a matter of convenience. It reduces avoidable stresses on the battery and helps keep a potential fire away from people and escape routes.
That does not mean every scooter battery is likely to fail. The point is to avoid adding preventable risks: do not use a charger without model-specific approval, do not charge a hot or visibly damaged battery, and do not leave a charging scooter unattended or in a place where a fire could trap people.
Know the warning signs and what to do
The Department for Transport lists these as possible signs of a battery problem:
- The battery is extremely hot to the touch.
- It is swollen or misshapen, or it is leaking.
- It makes hissing or cracking noises.
- It produces a strong or unusual smell.
- It fails to charge fully or takes longer than usual to charge.
These are reasons to stop and get advice, not symptoms to troubleshoot by continuing to charge the scooter. A pack that changes shape, leaks, or smells unusual should not be pressed, opened, or tested with another charger. Likewise, if charging performance changes abnormally, do not keep leaving it connected longer in the hope that it will recover.

If you notice a warning sign, stop using and charging the scooter. Do not keep testing the battery or attempt to repair a damaged pack yourself; contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider for advice. If the battery is smoking or on fire, treat it as an active fire: raise the alarm, evacuate, stay out, and call emergency services. The UK guidance specifies 999; elsewhere, call your local emergency number. Do not try to carry or handle a smoking battery.
For an active fire, prioritize people over the scooter. Alert others, leave the building or area, remain outside, and call the emergency number where you live. Do not go back inside to retrieve the scooter or attempt to move a smoking battery. The Department for Transport guidance is written for England, Scotland, and Wales and uses 999; emergency numbers and local fire-service directions differ elsewhere.

The basic charging precautions align, but local emergency numbers and fire-safety advice vary. Follow local emergency guidance as well as the instructions for your particular scooter and battery.
The Department for Transport page also discusses UK scooter-use rules, including restrictions on where private scooters may be used. Those legal rules are separate from battery charging and storage, and they vary by jurisdiction.
