To buy or renew third-party car insurance online in India, use an insurer’s official website, enter the vehicle and proposal details accurately, check that the quote is for liability-only (Act Only) cover, and review the policy documents before paying. Third-party liability insurance is mandatory for vehicles plying on public roads. It covers specified liabilities to other people; it does not pay to repair or replace your own car. For renewal, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) advises approaching the insurer at least 15 days before expiry and says a valid pollution-under-control (PUC) certificate is mandatory on the renewal date.
What third-party car insurance covers—and what it does not
Third-party motor insurance, also called liability-only or Act Only cover, is insurance for specified liabilities to others arising from the insured vehicle. IRDAI states that third-party liability insurance is mandatory for vehicles plying on public roads in India. This is the minimum cover described in the regulator’s policyholder guidance; it is not protection for damage to the insured car.

A package or comprehensive policy combines third-party liability cover with own-damage cover for the insured vehicle. The scope, conditions, exclusions and limits depend on the policy wording. If your priority is protection for your own car as well as liability to others, a liability-only quote does not meet that need: you need own-damage cover in addition to the required liability cover.
| Policy type | Liability to others | Damage to the insured car | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third-party / liability-only / Act Only | Yes, subject to the policy’s terms and limits | No | Confirm the quote is Act Only and review the third-party property-damage limit and policy wording. |
| Package / comprehensive | Yes | Includes own-damage cover, subject to terms, exclusions and deductibles | Compare the own-damage cover, deductibles, coverage and insured declared value (IDV), not just the premium. |
Do not choose based on the word “comprehensive” or a low displayed price alone. Check the actual product name and documents: a quote can be unsuitable if it excludes the type of protection you intended to buy.

The practical distinction is straightforward: liability-only cover addresses specified legal and financial liability to others, while own-damage cover addresses damage to your insured vehicle, subject to the contract. A policy described as comprehensive or package combines these broad categories, but that label does not remove the need to read its terms. The insurer’s summary, brochure and policy wording should make clear what cover is included and what limits, deductibles or exclusions apply.
Before you start an online purchase or renewal
Online purchase screens differ by insurer, so there is no single official sequence or set of field labels that applies everywhere. Prepare the information and documents you have, and use the insurer’s official channel rather than assuming a dealer or intermediary is the only route. IRDAI says buyers need not buy through a vehicle dealer and that insurer websites can be used to compare premiums.
- Identify the car and its existing policy. Keep the vehicle registration details and, for a renewal, the current policy information available. Registration details including the engine and chassis numbers are among the information used in pricing, so enter them carefully when requested.
- Decide the cover you need. If you want only liability cover, look specifically for “Third Party,” “Liability Only” or “Act Only.” If you want cover for damage to your own car, look for a package policy that includes own-damage cover.
- For renewal, check expiry and PUC status. IRDAI advises approaching the insurer at least 15 days before the policy expires. Its guidance says a valid PUC certificate is mandatory on the renewal date.
- Use accurate proposal information. Complete the proposal form carefully, review entries before submitting, and retain a copy of the proposal. IRDAI’s consumer guidance says to fill in the proposal form yourself even if a vehicle dealer is arranging the insurance.
- Allow time to resolve questions. Starting early gives you time to correct a registration or proposal detail, clarify the cover, or follow the insurer’s process if the policy has already expired.
Before opening a quote, have the vehicle details and any current policy record close at hand so that you can check what you enter rather than relying on memory. Insurers may request different information, and the available guidance does not prescribe one standard online form. If a field is unclear or your records do not match, contact the insurer for instructions instead of guessing. Accurate proposal details matter because vehicle particulars are used in pricing and form part of the records against which the final policy should be checked.
Recommended Free Tools
Also distinguish a quote or proposal from an issued policy. A payment or proposal confirmation is useful to retain, but it is not a substitute for checking the final policy document and certificate. Confirm that the issued records show the intended vehicle, policyholder, type of cover and dates. This simple final review can reveal a typing error or a mismatch between the cover you selected and the cover actually recorded.
How to buy or renew online
The following is a practical sequence, not a promise that every insurer uses the same website layout or checkout steps. Follow the instructions on the insurer’s own site and check the documents generated for your specific vehicle and policy.
- Open the insurer’s official website. Navigate to its motor-insurance purchase or renewal area. Check that you are on the insurer’s genuine official channel before entering personal or vehicle information.
- Choose purchase or renewal. Select the route that matches your situation. For a renewal, provide the current policy details if requested and check the displayed expiry date. If the policy has expired, do not treat the ordinary renewal screen as proof that cover has continued; contact the insurer and follow its current process.
- Enter vehicle details exactly. Supply the registration and other requested vehicle particulars, including engine or chassis information where asked. Check the entries against the vehicle documents. A mismatch can affect the quote or policy record, and these details are used in pricing.
- Complete the proposal form yourself. Provide the requested information accurately, read each question, and save or retain a copy of the completed proposal. Do not guess at a detail simply to move to the next screen; ask the insurer how to resolve uncertainty.
- Select the right cover type. Confirm whether the offer is liability-only/Act Only or a package policy with own-damage cover. If you intended to insure damage to your own car, do not proceed with an Act Only quote on the assumption that it includes that protection.
- Review the quote and policy terms. Check the insured vehicle and owner details, cover type, start and end dates, third-party property-damage terms, and any listed optional covers or limitations. Read the policy brochure or wording, not only the short summary on the payment page.
- Confirm renewal requirements. For a renewal, make sure a valid PUC certificate is available on the renewal date, as IRDAI’s guidance says it is mandatory then. If the insurer asks for additional information or an inspection because of a break in cover, follow its instructions rather than assuming payment alone completes renewal.
- Pay through the official checkout. Verify the product and vehicle details one more time before payment. Use the insurer’s own payment flow and retain the transaction or proposal confirmation.
- Save and inspect the issued records. Download the issued policy and certificate, and retain the proposal and payment confirmation. Check the final documents for the vehicle, owner, cover type and policy dates. If an issued detail is wrong or a document has not arrived, contact the insurer promptly using its official support channel.
At the quote-review stage, slow down enough to compare what the screen says with what you set out to buy. For intended Act Only cover, verify that the product is not instead a package policy with a different scope; for intended own-damage protection, verify that the offer actually includes it. Check the start and end dates rather than assuming a renewal automatically begins when the prior policy ends. The policy document is the record to review for the dates and terms that apply.

There may be optional covers or limitations shown alongside a quote. Do not assume an add-on is included because it appears on the same screen, or that an item described briefly in a quote has a particular benefit without checking its wording. The insurer’s documents for the specific product control the details. If you cannot tell what a listed option changes, ask the insurer before paying rather than inferring its effect from the label.
How to compare cover and premiums
For a liability-only policy, first compare what the policy covers and the terms that apply, rather than assuming a cheaper quote is equivalent in every respect. IRDAI’s guidance says third-party premium rates are laid down by the regulator and are the same across insurers. The same guidance says own-damage pricing is set by insurers. Those statements are from an undated policyholder guidance page, not a freshly checked 2026 quote or tariff; verify current applicable rates and product terms with the insurer before relying on a particular price.
IRDAI’s cited guidance states a third-party property-damage cover limit of Rs. 750,000 and describes an option to restrict that cover to Rs. 6,000 for a reduced liability-only premium. These are figures stated on that undated guidance page. They are not a personalized quotation or independent confirmation of the terms currently offered for a particular vehicle. Check the current policy wording and quote to confirm the applicable limit and any restricted option before buying.
If you are considering a package policy, compare the own-damage protection alongside liability cover. IRDAI advises comparing premiums together with deductibles, coverage and IDV rather than choosing solely on price. The premium alone cannot tell you how much of a loss is covered, what you may have to pay yourself, or what insured value applies to the car.
- Start with the cover scope. Decide whether you need liability to others only or also own-damage cover.
- Check the property-damage terms. Read the stated limit and any restricted option in the actual quote and policy wording.
- For own-damage cover, compare more than price. Look at coverage, deductibles and IDV as well as the premium.
- Verify the quote applies to your vehicle. Registration and vehicle particulars can affect pricing, so a quote based on incorrect data is not a reliable comparison.
The comparison is not simply insurer A versus insurer B. First make sure you are comparing like with like: the same cover type, the same vehicle particulars and comparable dates. Then compare the relevant terms. For Act Only policies, pay particular attention to the third-party property-damage limit and any restricted option stated in the offer. For a package policy, examine the own-damage coverage, deductible and IDV as well as the price. If one quote uses different or incomplete vehicle details, its displayed premium is not a sound basis for choosing.
The figures of Rs. 750,000 and Rs. 6,000 are specifically values stated by IRDAI’s policyholder motor-insurance guidance, which does not display a publication or update date. Treat them as guidance-page figures, not as confirmation of a current personalized offer. The insurer’s current quote and policy wording are the practical documents to check for the cover and limit applicable to your vehicle. Likewise, the guidance’s statement about regulator-laid third-party rates should not be presented as a current tariff quotation for an individual buyer.

Renewing before expiry and dealing with a lapse
IRDAI advises approaching the insurer at least 15 days before the current policy expires. Use that lead time to confirm the renewal date, obtain an accurate quote, meet the stated PUC requirement and resolve any issues in the proposal. Do not leave renewal until the last moment if you can avoid it: a lapse can introduce additional steps, and paying after expiry does not by itself establish that cover was continuous.
IRDAI’s guidance says a break in insurance may require vehicle inspection and extra charges. If the policy has already expired, contact the insurer before assuming that an online payment will immediately restore cover or that the vehicle can be treated as insured for the gap. Ask what process applies to your vehicle and when any new cover begins; rely on the issued policy dates and the insurer’s current instructions, not on an assumed grace period.
A valid PUC certificate is stated by IRDAI to be mandatory on the renewal date. If you do not have a valid certificate, resolve that requirement and confirm the insurer’s instructions before completing renewal. The guidance does not establish a universal grace period or a blanket rule that all post-expiry renewals proceed without inspection.
The 15-day recommendation is a planning lead time: it gives you room to check dates, provide requested information and ask questions while the existing policy is still approaching expiry. It is not a promise that every renewal will be completed on a particular timetable, nor does it guarantee that an expired policy can be renewed without additional steps. If the policy has lapsed, the next action is to contact the insurer and follow the process it confirms for your vehicle. Do not infer continuous protection from a payment receipt or from the fact that a renewal option remains visible online.
When checking a renewal quote, compare the proposed new start date with the current policy’s expiry date. If dates do not appear to meet as intended, ask the insurer to clarify before paying. Keep the answer and final issued documents with your proposal and payment record. The final policy dates, rather than an assumption about a grace period, are what you should use to understand the period of cover recorded by the insurer.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying Act Only while expecting own-car repairs to be covered. Liability-only cover does not include own-damage protection for the insured vehicle. Choose a policy that includes own-damage cover if that is what you need.
- Assuming all insurers show the same checkout. Online steps and screen labels are insurer-dependent. Follow the official channel’s instructions and verify the issued documents.
- Entering vehicle information from memory. Check registration, engine and chassis details against the relevant records when requested; vehicle details are used in pricing.
- Submitting proposal information without reviewing it. Read the completed form and retain a copy. Correct errors through the insurer rather than assuming a payment receipt fixes them.
- Renewing too close to expiry—or after it—without checking the dates. Use IRDAI’s 15-day lead-time advice. If the policy has lapsed, ask the insurer whether inspection or other steps apply and confirm the effective dates.
- Ignoring the PUC requirement. IRDAI says a valid PUC certificate is mandatory on the renewal date.
- Relying on a headline premium or an old figure. Read the policy wording and verify the current terms, property-damage limit and quote for your vehicle. The cited regulator guidance is undated, and its figures should not be mistaken for a current personalized offer.
- Failing to save the final policy. Keep the proposal, payment confirmation, issued policy and certificate together, then check that the final policy records the intended vehicle, cover and dates.
- Assuming a dealer must arrange the insurance. IRDAI says buyers need not purchase through a vehicle dealer; insurer websites are an available channel for comparing premiums and arranging cover.
- Assuming a comparison screen is a guarantee of identical terms. Check the actual product and wording, especially where cover limits, optional covers or restrictions are shown.
Final check before you finish
Before you pay, make sure the policy is for the right vehicle and owner, the cover type matches your needs, the dates are correct, and the property-damage terms and any optional covers are understood. For a renewal, confirm expiry timing and valid PUC status; if the policy has lapsed, follow the insurer’s stated process rather than assuming there is uninterrupted cover. After payment, inspect and save the issued policy documents.

A useful last review is to check the proposal, quote and final policy against one another. Confirm that the vehicle and policyholder details are consistent, that the selected product is liability-only or package cover as intended, and that the period shown is the period you meant to purchase. For renewal, have the valid PUC certificate on the renewal date and make sure the insurer has told you whether a break requires an inspection or other steps. Save the records somewhere you can retrieve them if you need to verify the policy later.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Motor Insurance cover should I buy: Comprehensive Insurance or Liability Only Policy?
Choose based on the protection you need. Liability-only, also called Act Only, covers specified liability to others subject to the policy terms, but it does not pay for damage to your own car. A package or comprehensive policy combines liability cover with own-damage cover, subject to exclusions, limits and deductibles. If you compare package policies, IRDAI advises considering coverage, deductibles and IDV as well as the premium.
When should I approach the insurer to renew my policy?
IRDAI’s policyholder guidance advises approaching the insurer at least 15 days before the current policy expires. This gives you time to check the renewal details and resolve questions. The same guidance says a valid PUC certificate is mandatory on the renewal date.
Can I renew online after my policy has expired?
Contact the insurer and follow its current process rather than assuming an online payment restores continuous cover. IRDAI’s guidance says a break in insurance may require vehicle inspection and extra charges. It does not establish a universal grace period or guarantee that a post-expiry renewal proceeds without inspection. Check the new policy’s effective dates.
Is a PUC certificate required to renew car insurance?
IRDAI’s policyholder guidance says a valid pollution-under-control (PUC) certificate is mandatory on the renewal date. Check that it is valid for that date and follow the insurer’s current instructions.

Does third-party car insurance cover damage to my own car?
No. Liability-only or Act Only cover does not include own-damage protection for the insured vehicle. If you want cover for damage to your car, you need own-damage cover in addition to the required liability cover, such as through a package or comprehensive policy.
What should I check before paying for an online policy?
Check the vehicle and owner details, the cover type, start and end dates, third-party property-damage terms, and any listed optional covers or limitations. Read the policy brochure or wording rather than relying only on a short quote summary. For renewal, also check expiry timing and PUC status. Pay through the insurer’s official checkout and retain the proposal and payment confirmation.
Are third-party premiums the same at every insurer?
IRDAI’s undated policyholder guidance says third-party premium rates are laid down by the regulator and are the same across insurers, while own-damage pricing is set by insurers. Verify current applicable rates and the terms in the quote for your vehicle; that guidance is not a personalized current premium quotation.

The Bottom Line
For an online purchase or renewal, use the insurer’s official channel, enter accurate proposal details, and verify that the cover and dates match your needs before paying. Act Only cover does not protect your own car.
