Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Buy the specific car that its records and an independent Porsche-specialist inspection support—not a generation or trim badge on reputation alone. Start by verifying the VIN, model year, engine, transmission, market specification, and service history; then tailor the inspection to that Cayman’s engine family and ask for written estimates of material findings before agreeing on a price.
Start with the exact car, not just “a Cayman”
The Cayman name covers distinct generations, engine families, trims, and model-year specifications. A registration year or badge by itself may not establish what engine or equipment a particular car has. Before comparing asking prices, collect the vehicle identification number (VIN), model year, generation, trim, engine, transmission, market, and factory options. Use the VIN and build information to check the seller’s description against the car’s identity.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
This matters most when advice concerns a particular engine or model year. For example, the 987 changed around its 2009 facelift: specialist guide coverage distinguishes earlier M97 cars from the later direct-injection 987.2 engine, which it says does not have the intermediate shaft found in the earlier discussion. Applying one warning to every 987 can therefore send a buyer looking for the wrong thing. The same principle applies to 718 variants, whose powertrains are not all alike.
There is no source-backed universal “best Cayman” or failure-rate ranking across these generations. Treat a reported issue as a reason to investigate the individual car, not a prediction that it will fail. A well-documented car whose condition and repair needs fit your budget and intended use can be a better purchase than a more desirable badge with unanswered questions.

How the generations differ—and what to investigate
| Generation or variant | Engine distinction in the available model information | Inspection focus |
|---|---|---|
| 987, earlier cars | Specialist guide coverage identifies M97 engines. | For the exact engine, discuss bore condition and the relevance of IMS concerns; also inspect cooling components, ignition coils, suspension, sensors, and shift or clutch wear. |
| 987.2, around the 2009 facelift | The specialist guide describes a later direct-injection engine without the intermediate shaft. | Verify the exact year and engine; investigate bore condition and age-related cooling, suspension, sensor, and driveline concerns as appropriate. |
| 981 | The specialist guide describes the MA1 engine as unrelated to the earlier M96/M97 family. | Investigate reported intake-valve and high-pressure fuel-system symptoms, as well as cooling components, seals, and age-related wear. |
| 718 standard and S | Porsche’s launch information described turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Its 2016 launch specifications were 300 hp for the standard 718 Cayman and 350 hp for the S. | Confirm the exact model-year and market specification, then assess service history, diagnostic status, modifications, use, and condition. |
| 718 GTS 4.0 and GT4 RS | These are distinct 718 variants; do not assume they share the standard and S powertrain. Porsche’s 2019 GT4 announcement specified a naturally aspirated four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine rated at 420 PS. | Verify the precise variant and build specification by VIN and model-year information; have a Porsche-experienced shop assess the individual car. |
The 718 output figures above are launch specifications from Porsche announcements, not promises about every market or model year. Confirm the specification for the particular car being considered. The available material does not establish a comprehensive failure-rate ranking for 718 variants.
987: investigate the engine and the car’s age
For an earlier 987, do not translate discussion of the intermediate shaft into “every engine will fail.” The specialist guide’s distinction is important: it describes earlier M97 engines and a later 987.2 direct-injection engine without the intermediate shaft. Establish which car you are evaluating before interpreting advice about IMS concerns.
Bore scoring is a concern discussed in specialist guides, particularly for 987 S variants. That is a reason to ask questions and seek a suitable assessment, not evidence that every S engine is scored or that a mileage figure predicts failure. Ask the inspecting shop whether a borescope, compression test, or leak-down test is justified for the exact car. A borescope can support a qualified cylinder inspection; a camera result alone is not a full pre-purchase inspection or proof of engine health.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOther 987 guide prompts include the coolant expansion tank and water pump, early ignition coils, aged suspension parts, sensors, and shift- or clutch-related wear. Treat these as areas for the inspector to assess in context. A symptom, a documented repair, and a guide’s list of possible concerns are different kinds of evidence; ask the shop to identify what it actually finds on this car.

981: do not carry 987 assumptions forward wholesale
The 981’s MA1 engine family differs from the earlier M96/M97 family, so buyers should not automatically copy every 987 warning onto a 981. The specialist guide still recommends attention to possible intake-valve carbon symptoms and high-pressure fuel-system concerns. It also identifies coolant components, seals, and age-related wear as inspection topics.
Ask the shop to investigate symptoms present on the individual car and explain which findings support further testing. A guide’s mileage estimates are not a guaranteed maintenance interval, a defect threshold, or a statistical failure forecast. Use the car’s symptoms, service records, and inspection results instead.
718: identify the specific variant and model year
The 718 name includes standard, S, GTS 4.0, and GT4 RS versions. Porsche’s 2016 announcement gave the launch standard and S figures as 300 hp and 350 hp, respectively, and described turbocharged flat-four engines. Porsche’s 2019 Cayman GT4 announcement specified a naturally aspirated four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine with 420 PS. Those figures describe the cited launch specifications; offerings and specifications vary by model year and market.

For a used 718, match the VIN and build information to the claimed variant, then review its service records, diagnostic status, modifications, and use. The available evidence does not establish a comprehensive list of common 718 defects or a comparative failure rate. A specialist inspection should determine condition for the actual car rather than relying on a general ranking.

Use this buying sequence
- Write down the identity. Record the VIN, model year, generation, trim, engine, transmission, market, and factory options. Compare the documentation and seller’s claims with VIN/build information before relying on a badge or registration date.
- Request the history before arranging a viewing. Ask for dated service invoices, ownership and storage history, details of prior damage or repairs, and information about track use if known. Request records for major engine, cooling, clutch, transmission, suspension, and brake work. If records are missing, treat that as uncertainty to investigate and account for—not proof that a component is faulty.
- Check campaigns by VIN. Ask Porsche and the relevant national database to check the exact VIN for open or completed campaigns. A historical Porsche front-lid bracket campaign is a reminder that applicability is vehicle-specific, not evidence that every Cayman was affected.
- Arrange an independent Porsche-specialist pre-purchase inspection. Choose a shop experienced with Porsche mid-engine cars, rather than relying only on a quick generic inspection. Agree the scope in advance and ask for written findings.
- Get estimates for material findings. Ask the shop to explain what needs attention, what further diagnostic work is warranted, and the estimated repair cost. Verify that claimed repairs and applicable campaigns were completed.
- Decide using the whole purchase. Compare condition, documentation, inspection results, deferred maintenance, specification, transmission, use, and estimated remediation—not reputation alone. Renegotiate or walk away if important questions remain unresolved or the seller will not permit an independent inspection.
What to ask the inspector to examine
Give the inspector the car’s VIN and the records you have, and ask for an assessment tailored to its generation and engine. A useful scope includes a cold start, diagnostic review, lift inspection, leak and cooling-system checks, suspension, brakes and tires, evidence of collision repair, and transmission or clutch assessment. Ask the shop to distinguish observed defects from recommended follow-up tests.
- Cold start and drivability: Request observation from a cold start when practical, plus an assessment of running behavior and any symptoms relevant to the engine family. Tell the shop about noises, warning lights, hesitation, or other concerns reported by the seller.
- Diagnostic review: Ask for a scan and an explanation of relevant findings in the context of the exact model. A scan is one part of the inspection; it does not replace a mechanical assessment.
- Engine-specific follow-up: On a 987 S, explicitly ask whether bore assessment is appropriate and whether a borescope, compression, or leak-down test is warranted. For other engines, let the specialist select additional checks based on the engine, symptoms, and records rather than applying a 987 checklist indiscriminately.
- Cooling and leaks: Ask the shop to inspect for leaks and assess the cooling system. On a 987, specifically discuss the expansion tank and water pump; on a 981, include the guide-identified coolant components and seals.
- Chassis and wear items: Have suspension, brakes, tires, and signs of collision repair assessed. Ask the inspector to identify condition and likely near-term work rather than treating the presence of age or mileage as a diagnosis.
- Clutch and transmission: Request an assessment suited to the car’s transmission and a check for shift or clutch-related wear where applicable. Pair the findings with invoices for previous work and the seller’s account of use.
Have a Porsche specialist inspect the car before you commit. An inspection is most useful when it produces written, car-specific findings and separates confirmed faults from areas that need more testing.
Read records as evidence, not reassurance
A service stamp or a seller’s summary is less informative than dated invoices that identify work performed. Organize the paperwork by date and ask the seller to fill gaps in the timeline: who owned the car, where it was stored, what damage or repairs occurred, and whether it was used on track if known. Compare answers with the documents and the inspector’s findings.
Pay particular attention to records for major engine, cooling, clutch, transmission, suspension, and brake work. Check whether a claimed repair is supported by an invoice and whether the current inspection finds related symptoms. A missing invoice does not prove that work was not done; it does mean you have less evidence to rely on and may need to verify the work or budget for further investigation.

Keep three categories separate when evaluating a concern: what the paperwork documents, what the seller reports, and what the independent inspector observes. If those accounts conflict, ask for clarification or additional evidence before using the claim to justify a purchase price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check recalls and campaigns against the VIN
In a 2014 announcement, Porsche said it would replace the front-lid lock bracket as a precaution on 4,428 specified two-door sports cars worldwide, including some Caymans. That count is the campaign population Porsche cited, not an issue rate for Caymans and not a statement that every Cayman was included.
Use the VIN to check current applicability and completion with Porsche and the relevant national database. Ask for documentation if the seller says the campaign was completed. The 2014 example is historical; it is not an exhaustive current recall lookup, and a general model-year search cannot establish a particular car’s status.

- Identity and exact specification: VIN, model year, generation, engine, transmission, market, trim, and options.
- History: dated servicing, ownership and storage information, known damage and repairs, use, and records for major work.
- Inspection: written findings, symptoms, diagnostic results, and any recommended follow-up tests.
- Outstanding work: repair estimates, deferred maintenance, and campaign status.
- Fit for your needs: condition, specification, transmission, and known use in relation to your budget and intended driving.
Compare the asking price alongside estimated remediation and unresolved diagnostic work. A low price does not resolve uncertainty; a documented repair or a clean inspection does not make every other part of a car new. Ask the shop for estimates where findings are material, then decide whether the total cost and remaining uncertainty make sense for you.
If a seller refuses an independent inspection, or evidence does not resolve a high-cost concern, do not substitute the seller’s reassurance for an answer. Renegotiate only when you understand the finding and its likely cost; otherwise, walking away preserves your ability to choose a better-supported car.
