To use a shared car or bike, check where you can pick it up and—especially—where you are allowed to end the trip, reserve it if needed, unlock it using the operator’s method, inspect it, then complete the required return steps in the app or at a terminal. The details are not universal: the operator’s current app and local rules control reservation windows, access, parking, and charges.
Before booking, check where the trip can end
Open the operator’s app and confirm that service is available at both your pickup and destination. Look for the vehicle’s permitted return location: it could be a station or reserved space, a free-floating service zone, an eligible bike port, or an approved parking area. Being able to drive or ride somewhere does not necessarily mean you can end the rental there.
Check live availability and the rules shown for that vehicle or trip, including reservation terms, pricing, and any fuel, charging, or parking requirements. For example, SHARE NOW distinguishes returns within a free-floating Home Area from station returns, while DOCOMO Bike Share allows users to check port availability and notes that return-port reservations depend on capacity. Those are service-specific arrangements, not general rules.
Reserve the vehicle if the service requires or allows it
Choose a car, station, or bike from the app map or list. Some operators let you reserve ahead; others limit how early you can hold a vehicle, and some bike services allow walk-up rentals when a bike is available. Check the displayed start time, reservation expiry, cancellation terms, and when charges begin. For example, Evo describes advance reservations, while SIXT Share describes a limited hold period; neither establishes a standard window for other services.

If you are using a station-based service, confirm that you selected the correct pickup station and understand where the vehicle must be returned. If you do not reserve, verify that the vehicle is still available when you arrive.
Find and unlock the car or bike
At pickup, match the vehicle to the identification shown in the app before trying to unlock it. Depending on the operator and vehicle, access may use an app command, QR scan, key fob or RFID card, or a code entered at a bike terminal. Make sure your phone has enough battery if the app is part of the access process.

Shared cars
Follow the app’s start instructions. Some services use an app or fob to begin a reserved trip; others may provide a separate key inside the car. Communauto, for example, describes starting a reserved trip through its app or fob and then taking the vehicle key from the glove box. Keep any key or credential with you as the operator directs.
Shared bikes
Use the method specified for that bike: it may be a QR scan, a passcode, or a registered card at a terminal. DOCOMO Bike Share describes code, QR, or card access depending on the setup; Uber’s bike instructions use QR unlocking. Do not assume that one operator’s unlocking process will work with another service.

Inspect the vehicle before you leave
For a car
Walk around the car and check for existing damage before driving. Report any damage using the operator’s required app or support channel, and follow its instructions if the car appears unsafe or unusable. SIXT Share and Enterprise both explicitly tell users to check and report damage before departure.
For a bike
Check that the bike appears usable and undamaged, and that its lock works. DOCOMO Bike Share warns that a bike may have been returned with an issue. If the bike is damaged or unsafe, report it through the service and choose another one if available.

Use the vehicle under its own service rules
Follow traffic laws and local parking rules, and keep the app or any required access credential available. Fuel, charging, mileage, pause, and cost policies differ by operator and city. Enterprise’s directions about its fuel card and minimum fuel level apply to its program; do not assume they apply to another shared car. WeGo likewise notes that project terms determine shared-vehicle charges. Check your trip’s terms rather than importing a rule from another service.
For bike trips, follow local riding rules and the operator’s parking instructions. Uber recommends wearing a helmet; riders should also follow applicable local requirements and the service’s guidance.

Return the vehicle and confirm the trip has ended
Use the return location and closing sequence shown for your trip. Do not assume that walking away, locking a bike, or parking a car automatically ends the rental.
Car returns
A station-based car must go back to its designated station or space. A free-floating car must be parked inside the service’s permitted zone, such as the Home Area shown in the app. Enterprise instructs its users to return the car to the reserved space and finish the trip in the app. If the operator requires it, put the key or fob back in its holder, then close and lock the car as directed.
Bike returns
A docked bike must be returned to an eligible port. Depending on the service, you may need to lock it manually and complete a return action at the terminal. DOCOMO Bike Share describes this type of sequence. Other services may require parking in an approved area instead: Uber instructs riders to lock its bike and park where the app indicates, clear of walkways and accessibility ramps.
Verify completion
Before leaving, check for an end-trip confirmation in the app or at the terminal. If the trip still appears open or the return is not confirmed, follow the operator’s troubleshooting or support instructions rather than assuming the rental has ended.
