To check whether a Tesla Model 3’s headlights are aimed correctly, use a headlight tester or have Tesla Service or a qualified lighting shop measure them. Do not use the touchscreen’s Adjust Headlights mode to inspect the beam: Tesla says that mode creates a non-standard pattern. The screen control can change the aim, but Tesla warns that the original calibrated position cannot automatically be restored.
Check the aim; do not judge it in adjustment mode
A headlight that looks too high, poor forward visibility, or repeated flashes from other drivers are reasons to investigate. None proves by itself that the headlights are mis-aimed. A tester-based inspection is the way to measure the beam rather than infer its aim from how it looks on the road.

Tesla’s service procedure for 2017–2023 Model 3 says not to enter touchscreen Adjust Headlights mode while checking aim. The mode changes the beam pattern, so what you see there is not the normal pattern to inspect. See Tesla’s headlight aiming inspection procedure.
This distinction matters because “checking” and “adjusting” answer different questions. An inspection asks whether the beam is within the applicable aiming tolerance. Adjustment changes the beam angle. A screen setting that moves a lamp does not measure the result, and the temporary pattern displayed in adjustment mode is not a reliable representation of the normal beam. If the concern is glare, poor visibility, or a beam that seems persistently high, the useful next step is a measured check—not repeated changes based on appearance.

| Procedure | What it is for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Touchscreen adjustment | Changes the headlight angle through a driver-facing control. | It is not an inspection method; Tesla says the original calibrated position cannot automatically be restored. |
| Tester-based inspection | Measures each beam using a level headlight tester and settings for the vehicle and lamp configuration. | The setup and applicable local tolerance matter; the service reference is not a universal legal standard. |
In practical terms, use the touchscreen only if you already understand the adjustment procedure and have a proper way to verify the result. If you only want to know whether the aim is correct, ask Tesla Service or a qualified vehicle-lighting shop for an inspection. If a shop recommends adjustment, ask what measurement indicates it is needed and whether the completed aim will be checked again.
What a proper aiming check involves
Tesla’s cited procedure applies to 2017–2023 Model 3. It calls for a flat, level surface, tires inflated to specification, and a level headlight tester on a surface level with the car. The tester is positioned about 30 cm from the lamp lens and aligned perpendicular to the vehicle. Each headlight is checked separately, with tester settings selected for the headlight type and whether the car is left- or right-hand drive.
These setup details are part of the measurement, not optional refinements. A slope or an improperly leveled tester can affect what the equipment reads. The tester must be aligned to the vehicle, and the applicable lamp and vehicle settings must be selected; otherwise, the reading may not represent the specified check. The procedure’s 30 cm distance describes where the tester is placed, not a general distance at which an owner should stand or a wall should be positioned.

The service procedure gives these inspection values, while also directing the technician to use the applicable country’s tolerance:
| Reference | Value | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical inspection specification | -1 to -1.5 degrees | Tesla Service procedure for 2017–2023 Model 3; check against the applicable country’s tolerance. |
| Horizontal inspection specification | 0 to 2 degrees | Tesla Service procedure for 2017–2023 Model 3; check against the applicable country’s tolerance. |
| Factory inclination reference | -1% | Tesla says the value is stamped on the headlamp housing; it is a factory reference, not a universal legal threshold. |
The vertical and horizontal values are technical references in Tesla’s service inspection, not a promise that every jurisdiction permits the same range. Tesla’s procedure specifically calls for the tolerance applicable in the country where the car is being checked. The -1% factory inclination reference is also distinct from those inspection values: it is identified on the headlamp housing and should not be mistaken for a universal pass/fail rule.
These values should not be treated as a do-it-yourself wall target or as a legal rule for every Model 3. Tesla distinguishes SAE/ECE and Global headlamp designs, and the correct tester settings depend on the lamp and vehicle configuration. The service manual’s overview describes those configuration distinctions in its headlight and fog light aiming section.

That is why there is no single set of numbers in this procedure that can safely be applied to every year, lamp type, market, or local inspection rule. The service reference covers 2017–2023 Model 3; if your car falls outside that span or has a different configuration, the applicable service information should guide the check. A technician should identify the installed headlight type and choose the corresponding tester settings rather than assume a setting based only on the model name.

See Tesla’s North American tool-method adjustment procedure.
A headlight aimer/tester is specialist equipment. Although Tesla names a particular tester in its North American procedure, that reference does not establish that any generic or low-cost device is compatible with the Model 3 procedure, or that a reading from it meets local requirements. Most owners who need a measurement are better served by a Tesla Service Center or a qualified lighting shop than by buying equipment for a one-time check.
When to get the headlights checked
Visibility is consistently poor
If the low beams seem to provide unusually little forward visibility, arrange a measured check rather than raising them by guesswork. Aiming is one possible issue, but the symptom alone does not establish its cause.
Focus on whether the concern is persistent rather than judging a single drive or one patch of road. A proper check can establish whether the measured aim is within the applicable specification. If it is, the aim measurement does not support changing the angle simply to make the beam appear higher. Tell the provider what you are experiencing and ask for the aim to be measured with the correct configuration settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOther drivers keep flashing you
Repeated flashes can be a reason to have the aim checked, especially if the beam also appears persistently high. They are not a measurement: do not assume that every flash means the headlights are mis-aimed or change the setting based on one encounter.

Consider the pattern of the concern, not just one response from another driver. A repeated concern is a sensible prompt to arrange a check, but it cannot tell you which headlight, direction, or amount of adjustment may be needed. A tester provides a measurement; other road users’ reactions do not.
The beam seems to change around traffic
Adaptive high beams can change their behavior when the car detects an approaching vehicle. That feature is separate from static headlight aim: adaptive operation does not confirm that the underlying beam is correctly aligned. Tesla describes the feature in its Model 3 owner’s manual, Lights section.
If what you notice is a change in high-beam behavior around traffic, adaptive operation may be relevant. If the low beams consistently seem too high or visibility remains poor, that is a separate reason to request a static aim check. Adaptive headlights are a driving feature, not an aiming tester and not a substitute for checking alignment when there is a persistent concern.
How to use the touchscreen adjustment
The following is the owner-manual path for changing the angle, not for inspecting the normal beam. Tesla recommends that owners adjust headlights only if they are familiar with proper headlight adjustment. It also warns that after adjustment the original calibrated position cannot automatically be restored; if you are unsure, contact Tesla for assistance.
- On the touchscreen, open Controls > Service > Adjust Headlights.
- Follow the instructions shown on the touchscreen and select the headlight to adjust.
- If you cannot confidently perform the procedure or verify the result, stop and ask Tesla Service or a qualified lighting professional to check it with suitable equipment.
The warning is important before you begin, not just after the steps. The owner-manual control permits a change in angle, but Tesla says the previously calibrated position cannot automatically be restored. Treat an adjustment as a consequential change, not as a reversible test to see what looks better on a wall or road.
Do not use the beam shown in this mode to decide whether the normal headlights are aimed correctly. For that, use a tester-based inspection. Tesla’s service manual explicitly warns that the mode creates a non-standard beam pattern and should not be used while checking aim. If you have entered the mode because you suspected an aim problem, do not treat the displayed pattern as proof either way; arrange a proper measurement instead.

Does a trip to a country with opposite traffic require adjustment?
No, not by itself. Tesla’s owner manual says temporary travel into a region where traffic drives on the opposite side does not require headlight adjustment. That guidance is about temporary travel; it does not replace a measured aiming check if you have a persistent visibility or glare concern.
This is separate from the tester procedure’s left- or right-hand-drive configuration selection. The service check says tester settings depend on the actual headlight type and vehicle configuration. Do not infer from a temporary trip that you need to alter the setting, or from the travel guidance that an unrelated persistent aim concern should be ignored.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to ask a service provider
- Ask for a measured headlight-aim check with a suitable headlight tester, rather than a visual judgment alone.
- Tell the provider whether the concern is poor visibility, an apparently high beam, or repeated flashes from other road users.
- Ask them to identify the headlight configuration and use the appropriate tester settings and local tolerance.
- If any adjustment is needed, ask that the result be checked after adjustment; avoid changing the touchscreen setting simply to experiment.
You can also ask whether the check will be performed on a flat, level surface, with the tires inflated to specification, and with the tester leveled and aligned to the vehicle. These are elements of Tesla’s cited procedure, not unnecessary technicalities. If the provider uses a different process, ask how it accounts for the car’s headlight type, drive configuration, and local tolerance.
The published Tesla inspection procedure covers 2017–2023 Model 3. For other model years or a configuration not covered by that procedure, the applicable service information and local requirements should determine the check. A Tesla Service Center or a qualified vehicle-lighting shop is the appropriate next contact if you are unfamiliar with adjustment, uncertain about the equipment, or still experiencing a persistent issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if my Tesla headlights are too high?
Do not judge them in touchscreen Adjust Headlights mode; Tesla says that mode creates a non-standard pattern. A tester-based inspection on a flat, level surface is the reliable way to measure aim. Poor visibility, a beam that persistently appears high, or repeated flashes are reasons to arrange a check, but none is itself a measurement.

Can I adjust the headlights from the Tesla touchscreen?
Yes. The Model 3 owner-manual path is Controls > Service > Adjust Headlights; follow the touchscreen instructions and select a headlight. Tesla recommends doing this only if you are familiar with proper adjustment. The original calibrated position cannot automatically be restored, and the mode is not for inspecting aim.
What does a Tesla Model 3 headlight aim check involve?
Tesla’s cited 2017–2023 procedure calls for a flat, level surface, tires inflated to specification, and a level tester on a surface level with the car. The tester is set about 30 cm from the lamp lens, aligned perpendicular to the vehicle, and used on each lamp with settings for the headlight type and left- or right-hand-drive configuration.
What are the Tesla Model 3 headlight aiming specifications?
For the 2017–2023 Model 3 procedure, Tesla gives -1 to -1.5 degrees vertical and 0 to 2 degrees horizontal, while directing technicians to use the applicable country’s tolerance. Tesla also identifies -1% as the factory inclination reference stamped on the headlamp housing. These are not universal legal limits for every year, lamp type, or jurisdiction.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use a wall to check the beam cutoff?
The cited Tesla procedure is based on a level headlight tester and configuration-specific settings; it does not establish a universal wall distance, cutoff height, or legal threshold. Do not treat a wall observation as a substitute for a measured check when aim or glare is a concern.
Do adaptive high beams mean my headlights are aimed correctly?
No. Adaptive high beams can change when the vehicle detects an approaching vehicle, but that function does not verify static headlight aim. Arrange a tester-based check if the underlying beam seems persistently high or visibility is consistently poor.
Do I need to adjust the headlights when traveling somewhere traffic drives on the other side?
Tesla’s owner manual says temporary travel to a region with opposite traffic direction does not itself require adjustment. That does not replace a measured check if you have a separate, persistent visibility or glare concern.
The Bottom Line
For a reliable Tesla Model 3 headlight check, use a suitable tester with the vehicle and lamp configuration set correctly, and follow local tolerance. The touchscreen can adjust beam angle, but it creates a non-standard pattern for that task and cannot automatically restore the original calibrated position. If you are unsure, ask Tesla Service or a qualified lighting professional to measure the aim.
