Set your motorcycle’s suspension for the complete load you’ll carry: rider and riding gear, passenger and their gear if applicable, luggage, and accessories. Use the owner’s manual for your exact model and year to select the appropriate preload setting or load mode, then measure loaded sag or ride height only if the manual gives a method and target. There is no universal number of clicks or turns for touring.

Why touring luggage changes the setup

Luggage adds weight to the motorcycle, and the passenger, riding gear, and accessories add to the load too. That extra weight compresses the suspension and changes the motorcycle’s ride height. A setup that works for a solo ride with little cargo may not be right once the bike is packed for a trip.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Preload is the adjustment most directly associated with accommodating a change in load. Setting it for the intended load helps position the spring and restore the model’s prescribed loaded ride height. It does not make a suspension spring stronger, increase the motorcycle’s legal or manufacturer-specified carrying capacity, or substitute for a suitable spring when the stock adjustment range is insufficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Damping adjustments, where fitted, serve a different purpose from preload. Compression and rebound settings control how the suspension responds to movement; do not treat them as alternate ways to compensate for an incorrectly loaded or excessively compressed spring. Follow the motorcycle’s own procedures and reference settings for those adjusters.

Think of the touring setup as a matched condition, not a single adjustment made for “luggage.” The right setting depends on the whole combination of occupants, riding gear, bags, and accessories. A change from solo riding to two-up travel, or removing some of the packed load, can change the condition the manual’s setting is meant to address. Revisit the prescribed setting when the load changes materially rather than assuming the touring preload is right for every ride.

Before adjusting: identify the motorcycle and the load

Find the exact manual

Start with the owner’s manual for the motorcycle’s precise model, year, and market version. Adjustment mechanisms and instructions differ: a bike may use a hand knob, threaded collars, a hydraulic adjuster, or an electronic suspension menu. A click, turn, scale mark, or named load mode on one model does not translate into a setting for another.

Look for the manual sections covering rear suspension, spring preload, load or ride-height adjustment, sag inspection, and damping if applicable. Note the prescribed starting point, direction of adjustment, permitted range, and whether the manual calls for a particular number of people, tools, or measurement method. If your motorcycle has electronically selected load conditions, use the menu and load descriptions in its manual rather than trying to map them onto another model’s click settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These distinctions matter even within one model family. Honda’s Africa Twin manual, for example, describes manual preload adjustment for some variants and electronically adjustable suspension with named loading conditions for others. A procedure or standard position listed for one type should not be assumed to apply to another. Check that the manual section you are using matches the suspension fitted to your motorcycle, not just the model name on the tank.

Before touching an adjuster, identify its reference point. The manual may specify a standard position, minimum position, scale, or named mode. Any instruction such as “seven clicks” is meaningful only with its stated reference and applicable variant. If the baseline or direction is unclear, stop and confirm the right manual instructions rather than counting from an arbitrary position.

Work out the actual touring load

Set up for the configuration you will ride, not an idealized luggage-only weight. Include:

  • The rider and riding gear.
  • The passenger and their riding gear, if applicable.
  • Touring luggage and everything packed in it.
  • Accessories and other equipment carried on the motorcycle.

Check the motorcycle’s weight limits on its label and in its manual before packing. The suspension setting is not permission to carry more than the specified maximum. Harley-Davidson’s service-procedure material defines GVWR in terms of the motorcycle, accessories, rider, passenger, and cargo, and says the maximum additional weight must not exceed the applicable specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the distinction between load setup and load capacity clear. Preload is used to set up the suspension for a load the motorcycle is rated to carry; it does not change the GVWR or axle load limits. A preload adjuster’s capability is not itself a luggage allowance. Check the applicable weight specification even if the motorcycle has a load mode or a hydraulic adjuster described as accommodating added cargo.

Set rear preload for the loaded condition

  1. Park and prepare the motorcycle as instructed. Use the manual’s safety and setup directions. If you need to measure ride height or sag, follow the manual’s specified method, including any requirements for tire pressure, how the bike is held upright, and who or what must be on it.
  2. Select the setting for the planned load. Use the model’s load table, named mode, or preload procedure. Choose the condition that matches whether you will ride solo, with luggage, with a passenger, or with both a passenger and luggage, if those choices are provided.
  3. Adjust only within the stated range. Follow the manual’s direction for increasing or decreasing preload and its procedure for the specific adjuster. Do not force a knob, collar, or other adjuster past its stop. If a tool is required, use one that fits the motorcycle’s mechanism; there is no basis for assuming a particular spanner wrench is universal.
  4. Check the loaded ride height or sag if specified. Use the manual’s measurement points, load, and target. Do not substitute a target from a different model or a generic touring figure.
  5. Set paired shocks as directed. Where the manufacturer requires equal settings on a pair of adjustable shocks, make and verify the adjustments accordingly. Harley-Davidson’s procedure warns that unequal adjustment can adversely affect stability and handling.
  6. Record the setting and verify the result. Note the load configuration and final adjustment so you can return to it. Check that the motorcycle sits and behaves as intended before beginning the tour.

Honda’s Africa Twin Owner’s Manual illustrates why the exact instructions matter. For the manual-adjusted variants covered on its cited rear-suspension page, it identifies seven clicks from minimum as the standard rear preload position, describes 35 or more positions, and says not to turn beyond the adjuster’s limits. Those details apply to the variants covered by that manual page; they are not a touring setting for other motorcycles. The manual also describes electronically adjustable variants with four named loading conditions.

The Africa Twin example is not a rule to add seven clicks when luggage is fitted. It is a standard position stated for certain manual-adjusted variants, with a specific minimum-position reference. For the correct loaded setup, use the applicable model’s own load instructions. The manual’s four named electronic loading conditions likewise illustrate an alternative to a click count, not a universal menu or a measurement of how much luggage a bike can carry.

Some motorcycles use a tool-operated collar rather than a hand adjuster or menu. A shock preload spanner wrench can be useful when the exact motorcycle’s manual calls for one, but check compatibility with the shock and adjuster before buying or using a tool. A wrench that fits one shock may not fit another, and the manual remains the authority on how that mechanism is to be adjusted.

Measure sag only by the motorcycle’s prescribed method

Some manuals provide a sag or ride-height check to confirm the suspension is appropriate for the intended load. The measurement needs a defined reference point and load condition; a number taken with a different method cannot be compared reliably with the manual’s target.

The 2019 Indian Rider’s Manual procedure for rear shock preload (ride height) inspection begins with the specified tire pressure and the motorcycle secured upright. It compares a rear axle-to-fender reference measurement with the shock fully extended against a second measurement with the intended cargo and rider in riding gear aboard, adding the passenger if one is planned. The manual’s procedure subtracts the loaded measurement from the fully extended measurement. Follow the manual’s complete procedure for the applicable model rather than improvising a substitute measurement.

That sequence shows why a sag figure needs context. The fully extended measurement is the baseline; the loaded measurement uses the prescribed cargo and the rider in riding gear, with a passenger if planned. Changing the reference points, omitting the intended load, or measuring with the motorcycle in a different condition means the result is no longer the check described in that manual. Use the relevant instructions and target together.

That manual lists different rear sag values across its model families. They are useful examples of model-specific targets, not universal standards:

Springfield, Chieftain, and Roadmaster models 45 mm

Indian’s manual says, “For the most comfortable ride and proper ground clearance, adjust preload if ride height is out of specification.” The relevant specification is the one for the exact motorcycle being set up; do not use these Indian figures on another bike.

Do not treat 35 mm or 45 mm as a general touring target simply because those figures appear in a manufacturer manual. They apply to the named Indian model families and the prescribed inspection. Another motorcycle may specify a different target, a different method, a loading preset, or no user sag measurement in the same form. If your manual does not provide a target and method, do not invent one from another model’s figures.

Preload is not damping

If the motorcycle has compression or rebound adjusters, treat them as separate controls. Preload positions the spring for the load and the intended ride height. Damping adjustment changes the suspension’s response to compression or extension. A change to damping does not raise the motorcycle’s load rating or correct a spring that cannot support the intended load within its permitted adjustment range.

Some motorcycles provide manufacturer-specified damping baselines and adjustment directions, while others may not provide the same controls. Honda identifies rebound and compression adjustments on certain Africa Twin variants and gives directions and baseline settings for those variants. Use those exact instructions if they apply to your motorcycle. Make small, recorded changes only within the manual’s limits; there is no safe universal damping click count for touring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a touring setup, do not start by changing every available control at once. First establish the load and set preload or the model’s load mode as instructed. If the manual provides damping settings relevant to that suspension, use the stated baseline and directions as a separate step. Recording the original and revised settings helps you return to a known position if a change does not produce the intended result.

What manufacturer examples do—and do not—tell you

The figures below show the range of model-specific approaches found in the cited manuals. They are not interchangeable recommendations:

Manufacturer and manual material Published detail How to use it
Honda, Africa Twin Owner’s Manual, rear-suspension page Seven clicks from minimum is the stated standard position for the manual-adjusted variants covered; the manual describes 35 or more positions. Electronic variants have four named load conditions. Apply only to the variant covered by that manual and follow its adjustment limits and load instructions.
Indian Motorcycle, 2019 Rider’s Manual Recommended rear sag is 35 mm for Chief models and 45 mm for Springfield, Chieftain, and Roadmaster models. These are model-family figures for the manual’s prescribed inspection method, not general motorcycle targets.
Harley-Davidson, 2024 owner-manual excerpt A hydraulic preload adjuster for an applicable model is described as accommodating an additional 45 kg (100 lb) cargo load. This is specific to the applicable model and adjuster; it is not a general luggage allowance or a substitute for checking the motorcycle’s weight specifications.

Harley-Davidson’s 2024 figure describes what one applicable hydraulic adjuster is intended to accommodate. It does not establish a safe load for other motorcycles, or show that the motorcycle can carry that amount in addition to all other occupants, cargo, and accessories. Read the weight limits and suspension instructions together.

The different examples also show why asking “How much should I increase rear preload with luggage?” cannot be answered with one number for all motorcycles. The correct amount depends on the motorcycle’s adjuster and its manufacturer’s load procedure. Honda’s cited standard position, Indian’s sag targets, and Harley-Davidson’s stated hydraulic-adjuster cargo figure describe different model-specific details; none supplies a universal luggage adjustment.

Check the result before setting off

After adjusting, make a careful stationary check and then assess the motorcycle cautiously in a suitable, familiar area before committing to a long trip. The aim is to confirm that the setup corresponds to the manual’s specified load condition and ride-height requirements—not to diagnose every handling issue by trial and error.

  • Check that all adjusters remain within their marked or specified operating limits.
  • Revisit the setup if the planned load changes materially, such as riding solo instead of two-up or removing touring luggage, using the manual’s instructions for the new condition.

If the motorcycle cannot meet its specified loaded ride height within the available adjustment range, do not keep winding the adjuster or assume more preload will solve the problem. Ask a qualified suspension specialist whether a spring or shock appropriate to the motorcycle and load is needed. A change of component should be based on model and fitment, not treated as a routine touring upgrade.

A specialist can help assess whether the stock spring or shock is suitable when the prescribed loaded ride height cannot be reached within the available range. Any replacement needs to suit the motorcycle’s year and model and the intended load. Compatibility, load range, and serviceability are relevant fitment considerations; this is a conditional remedy, not a required upgrade for every touring motorcycle.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Copying another motorcycle’s click count

Click counts depend on the adjuster design and the manual’s reference point. Honda’s seven-click standard example applies to the manual-adjusted Africa Twin variants covered on that page. It is not a general instruction to add seven clicks for luggage. Find the correct baseline and loaded setting for your own model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adjusting for luggage but forgetting people and gear

A setup based on bags alone omits the rider, riding gear, passenger if present, and accessories. Choose a load condition that reflects the complete trip configuration and consult the weight specifications separately.

Using preload to compensate for an unsuitable spring or excess weight

Preload has an adjustment range; it does not change the motorcycle’s specified carrying limit. If the bike cannot achieve the manual’s loaded ride-height requirement within that range, stop and seek qualified model-specific advice rather than forcing the adjuster or exceeding the weight limit.

Changing damping and preload as if they were the same adjustment

Preload and damping do different jobs. Set load and ride height using the model’s preload procedure, then adjust damping only if the motorcycle provides it and its manual gives applicable instructions. Record any permitted changes so they are reversible.

Forcing an adjuster or servicing a pressurized damper improperly

Respect mechanical stops and service warnings. Honda cautions that its rear damper contains high-pressure nitrogen and should not be disassembled or improperly serviced. If an adjuster is stuck, damaged, or requires work beyond the owner procedure, have a qualified technician handle it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Setting paired shocks differently

Do not assume two rear shocks can be adjusted independently just because each has an adjuster. Follow the motorcycle’s procedure for paired shocks and match their settings when required. Harley-Davidson warns that improper adjustment can adversely affect stability and handling, with potentially severe consequences. If you are unsure whether the settings match, verify them before riding.

Treating an adjuster’s advertised capacity as the bike’s weight allowance

A model-specific statement about a hydraulic adjuster accommodating an additional 45 kg (100 lb) cargo load is not a general permission to carry that amount on any motorcycle. It also does not replace the combined weight limit for the motorcycle, accessories, occupants, and cargo. Check the motorcycle’s own specifications before packing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I increase rear preload with luggage?

There is no universal click count or number of turns. Use the owner’s manual for your exact model and year, and choose its setting or load mode for the full touring load: rider and riding gear, passenger and gear if applicable, luggage, and accessories. Preload cannot raise the motorcycle’s weight limit.

How do I set motorcycle sag with luggage and a passenger?

Follow the exact motorcycle’s manual, including its tire-pressure, upright-support, measurement-point, and loading instructions. The 2019 Indian procedure, for example, compares a fully extended rear axle-to-fender measurement with one taken under the prescribed cargo, rider in riding gear, and passenger load. Its targets differ by model family, so do not apply them to another motorcycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use another motorcycle’s sag target or preload click count?

No. Targets, adjuster directions, reference points, and click counts are model- and year-specific. Honda’s seven-click standard position applies only to the manual-adjusted Africa Twin variants covered by the cited manual page; Indian’s 35 mm and 45 mm figures apply to named Indian model families and its prescribed method.

Does more preload let me carry more luggage?

No. Preload sets the spring position for the intended load; it does not increase GVWR, axle load limits, or the motorcycle’s specified carrying capacity. Check the weight specifications separately and stay within them.

Should I adjust damping when I add touring luggage?

Treat damping separately from preload. Use compression or rebound adjustments only if your motorcycle has them and its manual gives applicable baselines and directions. Make small, recorded changes within the specified limits; there is no universal touring damping setting.

What if I cannot reach the specified loaded ride height?

Do not force the adjuster past its limits. Ask a qualified suspension specialist whether a spring or shock suitable for the motorcycle’s model and load is needed. A component change is a fitment decision, not a routine touring upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Set preload or the load mode for the complete touring load, follow the exact motorcycle’s manual, and check sag only with its prescribed method and target. Stay within weight and adjustment limits; if the bike cannot achieve its specified loaded ride height, seek qualified model-specific suspension advice.
