Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse your vehicle’s own owner or repair manual to decide whether and how its headlights can be adjusted. There is no universal wall distance, beam target, or screw-turning direction: those details depend on the vehicle and lighting system. A careful visual check can help identify a problem, but if you cannot follow the specified setup and interpret its target confidently, have a qualified shop aim the lamps.
First decide whether adjustment is appropriate
Headlights are set at the factory, and a beam that looks high or low does not by itself tell you which adjustment to make. Start with the exact year, make, and model’s owner manual or repair information. Check whether it provides an aiming procedure and whether that procedure is intended for a visual check or requires particular service equipment.

Look for a reason the aim may have changed. A replaced headlamp assembly, specified bulb replacement work, collision damage, or a change in suspension or ride height can call for an aiming check under the applicable service information. For example, a 2015 General Motors service bulletin directs aiming after the bulb-replacement work covered by that bulletin; it is not a general instruction for every vehicle. Read GM bulletin PIT5374A.
Do not treat a flash from an oncoming driver as proof that your lamps need adjustment. The 2011 Chevrolet Silverado owner manual identifies other drivers flashing their high beams as a possible sign of vertical-aim trouble, but that is guidance for that model year, not a universal diagnosis. The same manual says factory aim normally should not need further adjustment and recommends dealer service if adjustment is needed. See the 2011 Silverado manual’s “Headlamp Aiming” section.

Before turning anything, check whether there is an obvious reason to stop and seek service. If the lamp assembly is loose, appears damaged, or may have been installed incorrectly, a screw adjustment may not address the cause. If the vehicle was in a collision or its ride height has changed, use the service information applicable to that work rather than relying on a visual impression alone. The cited manuals support checking aim in particular circumstances, but they do not establish a single checklist that applies to every vehicle.
Also confirm that the manual identifies adjusters and a target you can actually access and interpret. Some procedures describe a wall-based visual check; others rely on particular references, tools, or service methods. If the instructions are absent or unclear, do not borrow a procedure simply because it is available for a similar-looking vehicle. A similar model, different year, or different lamp system may have a different target or adjustment sequence.
Why a wall method is not one-size-fits-all
A wall can make a beam pattern visible, but it does not tell you the correct target unless you also use the vehicle’s specified setup and reference. Manuals can differ on vehicle loading, distance from the wall, reference marks, which part of the cutoff to align, and adjustment sequence. Even the examples in the table below are not interchangeable recipes.
| Official example | Details stated in that procedure | What not to generalize |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 Toyota Supra technical instructions | Use low beams, settle the suspension, and set the vehicle 25 feet from the target; a 3-meter alternative is also described with a changed target zone. The instructions define the cutoff and give vehicle-specific positions and tolerances. They limit covering the opposite lamp to no more than three minutes. | Do not apply its distance, target zone, cutoff positions, tolerances, or sequence to another vehicle. The filed instructions say the procedure was due to be revised in March 2020, so treat them as a model-specific example rather than current general guidance. Toyota instructions filed with NHTSA. |
| GM bulletin PIT5374A (2015) | Its visual method uses a level surface and 25 feet, with low-beam lamps and a horizontal aim reference on a matte white, shaded wall or screen. | The bulletin applies to its specified vehicles and repair context. Its visual target is not a universal aim line. GM service bulletin. |
| 2011 Chevrolet Silverado owner manual | Record the headlamp aim-dot height and mark the wall at that height before checking the beam. The manual permits cardboard or an equivalent in front of the lamp not being adjusted, while warning not to cover a headlamp. | This is a model-year-specific procedure. Do not combine its reference mark with another vehicle’s distance or target. Silverado owner manual. |
Federal aimability language does not supply a driveway aiming recipe. In a 1990 interpretation of Standard No. 108, NHTSA stated that an installed headlamp system must be aimable with an externally applied aiming device or manufacturer-installed on-vehicle aiming devices. That interpretation addresses aimability, not a universal target or procedure for every car. Read NHTSA interpretation NHT90-3.96.
The distinction matters: a vehicle being designed to be aimable does not mean that every driver can identify the right adjustment point or complete the aiming process by eye. The 1990 NHTSA interpretation describes acceptable means of aimability under Standard No. 108. It does not set a shared wall distance, cutoff height, adjustment direction, or sequence for all vehicles. Treat the applicable manual or service procedure as the practical authority for your vehicle.
Prepare a controlled aiming area
Before setting up, confirm that the vehicle’s manual authorizes the method you plan to use and identify every condition it specifies. Across the cited procedures, the common controls include level ground, correct tire pressure, representative loading, a vehicle positioned square to a flat wall or aiming screen, and use of low beams. The exact requirements still come from your manual.
- Choose the surface and target: Use a level surface and the wall or screen required by the procedure. GM’s cited visual procedure specifies a matte white, shaded wall or screen; that condition belongs to that bulletin’s method.
- Set the vehicle’s condition: Follow the manual’s load and tire-pressure instructions. If it calls for settling the suspension, do so as directed; the 2020 Supra instructions include that step.
- Position the vehicle: Make it square to the wall or screen, then measure the specified distance from the reference point named in the manual. Do not assume every procedure measures from the same part of the car.
- Mark only the specified reference: Where the procedure calls for it, use masking tape to mark a horizontal line or other reference. A tape measure and tape help reproduce the setup; they do not determine the correct beam target.
- Use the prescribed beam: The cited examples use low beams. Do not substitute high beams unless the instructions for your vehicle explicitly call for them.
For instance, the Supra instructions state a 25-foot setup and a 3-meter alternative with a changed target zone. GM bulletin PIT5374A also uses 25 feet. Those figures describe those particular procedures; using 25 feet simply because it appears in an example does not make another vehicle’s check correct.

Small setup errors can undermine the comparison before you reach an adjuster. If the surface is not level, the vehicle is not square to the wall, or the loading and tire pressures do not match the manual’s conditions, the beam may appear displaced relative to the reference for reasons the procedure was designed to control. Reset the setup rather than trying to compensate by turning an adjuster.
Be deliberate about which distance and reference point the manual specifies. A number such as 25 feet is not enough by itself: the instructions may also define where that distance begins, how the vehicle sits relative to the screen, and where the target reference is placed. The Toyota example illustrates why distance and target go together: its 3-meter alternative changes the target zone. Do not convert one portion of a procedure while retaining the rest of another.
A tape measure and masking tape are practical setup aids, not aiming tools that establish a universal answer. GM’s visual procedure describes horizontal tape on its aiming screen. The Silverado procedure uses the recorded headlamp aim-dot height to mark a wall. Use tape only to reproduce the reference called for in your own instructions; a line at an arbitrary height cannot tell you whether the lamps are correctly aimed.
Read the low-beam pattern against your manual’s target
With the vehicle prepared, switch on the beam type specified by the manual and identify the exact reference it names. That may be a defined part of the low-beam cutoff relative to a line or a position tied to a headlamp reference mark. Do not assume the cutoff should sit at headlamp height, or borrow another vehicle’s cutoff position or tolerance.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Take time to distinguish the reference from the brighter area of the beam. In the GM bulletin, the procedure relates a particular portion of the low-beam cutoff to a horizontal aim line; the Supra instructions define their own cutoff and target positions. If the pattern is unclear, the reference mark is missing, or you cannot tell which portion the manual means, stop rather than guessing.
A visual check is a comparison against a specified target, not an invitation to move the beam until it looks right. The relevant part of the pattern may not be the brightest part, and the target may be expressed as a position or tolerance rather than a simple line at lamp height. Follow the exact wording and figures for the correct vehicle. If you cannot identify the cutoff or the specified reference confidently, do not estimate a new target based on how the beam looks on the wall.
Some procedures call for isolating one lamp while checking the other. Follow the manual’s specific method and time limits. The Silverado manual allows cardboard or an equivalent in front of the lamp not being adjusted but warns against covering a headlamp. GM likewise says not to cover a lamp. Toyota’s Supra instructions allow covering the opposite lamp for no more than three minutes because heat can damage its synthetic-resin lens. Never leave a lamp covered during a test: covering it can cause excessive heat.

These examples are not permission to cover a lamp on any vehicle. GM’s warning is explicit, and Toyota’s time limit is specific to its instructions. If your own procedure does not call for covering a lamp, do not introduce that step. If it does describe a way to isolate one beam, follow its method and any stated limit rather than leaving a lamp covered while you work out the rest of the setup.
Adjust only with the identified adjusters and sequence
Use only the adjustment points identified in the vehicle’s instructions. Depending on the design, an adjuster may control vertical aim, horizontal aim, or affect both. Do not infer the direction of movement from how a screw looks, and do not turn adjusters by trial and error.
Follow the prescribed order. The Supra instructions, for example, note that changing vertical aim can affect horizontal aim and specify a sequence. That sequence is not a substitute for the one applicable to your own vehicle. If access to the adjusters is unclear, the lamp’s pattern is unusual, or you cannot map an adjustment to the manual’s target, leave it to a qualified shop with the correct aiming method.
Before making any movement, match the identified adjuster to the adjustment the instructions describe. Do not assume an accessible screw is an aiming adjuster, that one screw controls only one direction, or that turning clockwise will move a beam in a predictable direction across vehicles. The examples provide no universal rotation rule, and the Supra instructions specifically note that changing vertical aim can affect horizontal aim.
Work in the sequence the vehicle instructions give, checking the specified target as directed. Avoid making multiple untracked turns or changing more than one adjustment without knowing what the procedure expects; otherwise it becomes harder to tell whether the beam moved toward or away from the required range. If the manual’s explanation does not let you connect a particular adjuster movement with the stated target, stop and seek help rather than experimenting.
A shop is the better option when the vehicle’s aiming method calls for equipment you do not have, when access or references are uncertain, or when the lamp assembly may be damaged or misinstalled. NHTSA’s aimability interpretation does not establish that the visual wall method will work for every headlamp system. There is no price or standard service charge specified in the sources cited here, so ask a dealer or qualified repair shop what aiming method applies to your vehicle and what the service will cost.
Verify the result and know when to stop
After any adjustment, check both lamps against the vehicle-specific target and restore any covers or components removed for access. If the aim will not come into the specified range, do not compensate with further unsystematic turns. The Supra instructions direct checking the unit and lens installation if correct aim cannot be achieved; a misinstalled or damaged assembly may be the underlying issue. The Silverado manual recommends dealer service when adjustment is needed.

A DIY visual check is most reasonable when the vehicle’s manual explains the method, the vehicle and adjusters appear intact, you can reproduce the stated floor, load, distance, and screen conditions, and the target is clear. Choose professional service if any of those conditions is uncertain, or if collision or installation damage is suspected. The choice is about whether you can carry out the applicable procedure accurately, not about applying a universal legal test.
Use the final check to confirm that the setup and adjustment have not drifted from the instructions. Compare both lamps with the correct target, restore anything temporarily removed, and confirm the lamps are no longer covered. If the procedure calls for checking one lamp at a time, repeat its safe method for the other side. The aim is not to make both patterns look identical by eye; it is to bring each into the range and relationship specified for that vehicle.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If the adjustment reaches its limit before the beam is within the specified range, or if the target cannot be achieved, stop. Continuing to turn an adjuster can conceal the real problem rather than fix it. Toyota’s 2020 Supra instructions say to check the unit and lens installation when correct aim cannot be achieved. That is useful model-specific guidance, not a claim that every vehicle has the same failure mode. An assembly that is damaged, incorrectly installed, or otherwise not responding as expected needs diagnosis under the applicable service information.
Professional service is also sensible when the vehicle manual directs the owner to a dealer, when you cannot identify the adjusters, or when the required setup cannot be reproduced. A DIY check is not automatically safer or cheaper if the target is uncertain; a qualified shop can use the aiming method appropriate to the vehicle. The 2011 Silverado manual’s recommendation to use dealer service is specific to that manual, while the broader decision is to stop whenever you cannot perform the vehicle’s procedure reliably.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.DIY visual check or professional service?
Use four practical questions to decide. First, does the exact vehicle manual explain or authorize a visual aiming method, or does it point to service equipment or dealer work? Second, does the vehicle appear undamaged, with intact adjusters and reference marks? Third, can you reproduce the specified level floor, loading, tire pressure, distance, and screen setup? Fourth, can you identify the required beam, target, and adjustment sequence without guessing?
If the answer to all four is clear, the manual describes a suitable visual procedure, and the car and components appear intact, you may be able to carry out the check as instructed. If any answer is no or uncertain, professional service is the safer choice. This comparison is a practical synthesis of the cited vehicle guidance, not a universal legal test or a promise that every vehicle can be correctly aimed with a wall.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same wall distance and tape marks for any car?
No. The correct distance, reference marks, cutoff target, loading, and adjustment sequence can vary by vehicle and procedure. The Toyota Supra instructions, GM bulletin PIT5374A, and 2011 Silverado manual describe different model-specific methods. Use the instructions for your exact vehicle rather than combining their measurements.
Should the low-beam cutoff line up with the headlamps?
Do not assume that. Follow the target and reference stated in the exact vehicle manual. The cited GM bulletin and Toyota instructions define specific low-beam cutoff references and targets; those are not universal positions.
Can I cover one headlamp while checking the other?
Only if your vehicle’s instructions describe that method, and only as directed. The Silverado manual permits cardboard or an equivalent but warns against covering a headlamp; GM also warns not to cover a lamp. Toyota’s Supra instructions limit covering the opposite lamp to no more than three minutes because heat can damage its synthetic-resin lens. Never leave a lamp covered during a test.

Treat it as a reason to check the vehicle’s instructions, not proof that your aim is wrong. The 2011 Chevrolet Silverado manual lists flashing high beams as a possible sign of vertical-aim trouble, but that guidance is specific to that model year and is not a universal diagnosis.
When should I take the vehicle to a shop?
Seek dealer or qualified repair service if your manual calls for it or requires equipment you do not have; if the vehicle, lamp, adjusters, or reference marks may be damaged or incorrectly installed; or if you cannot reproduce the specified setup or interpret the target confidently. Stop if the aim will not come into the stated range instead of turning adjusters by trial and error.
Does NHTSA require a particular driveway aiming procedure?
The 1990 NHTSA interpretation NHT90-3.96 says an installed headlamp system must be aimable with an externally applied aiming device or manufacturer-installed on-vehicle aiming devices. It does not provide one wall distance, target, or procedure for every vehicle. Follow the applicable owner or repair manual.
How much does professional headlight aiming cost?
The cited official materials do not provide a standard service price. Ask a dealer or qualified repair shop what aiming method applies to your vehicle and what the service will cost.

The Bottom Line
Do not adjust headlights by copying another car’s wall distance, tape marks, or screw direction. Use the exact vehicle’s manual to set up the check, read its low-beam target, and follow its adjustment sequence. If the instructions or beam are unclear, damage is possible, or the target cannot be reached, stop and have a qualified shop check the lamps.
