How to Adjust a Car Seat and Steering Wheel for a Safe Driving Position

A safe driving position balances comfortable pedal control and clear visibility with proper seat-belt fit and room between your breastbone and the steering-wheel airbag.

Park before adjusting. Sit upright with your back against the seat, set the seat so you can comfortably reach and fully operate the pedals, then position the steering wheel without moving so close that it is less than 10 inches from your breastbone. NHTSA recommends at least 10 inches between the driver’s breastbone and the steering-wheel airbag cover; keep your seat belt properly fitted and use your vehicle’s owner manual for its specific adjustment controls.

A safe position is a balance: you need clear sight of the road and instruments, comfortable control of the pedals and wheel, a properly worn seat belt, and space between your chest and the airbag cover. There is no single seat height, seat-back angle or wheel setting that suits every driver and vehicle. Use the steps below as a practical sequence, then follow the instructions in your owner manual for your particular car.

Adjust the seat and wheel in a safe order

Make adjustments while the vehicle is parked in a safe place, not while driving. The sequence below combines general NHTSA guidance with a vehicle-manual example; it is not a tested procedure or a universal setting. Your body, vehicle controls and available adjustments will affect the final position. Work through the sequence calmly, and recheck the whole setup after any change that shifts your position.

  1. Sit fully back and upright. Settle against the seat back in a comfortable, upright posture. Avoid slouching or reclining more than necessary; your posture affects pedal reach, belt fit and the distance between you and the airbag. Start with your back against the seat rather than sitting forward on the edge, since that is the position from which you will judge reach and belt placement.
  2. Set the seat fore or aft for pedal control. Move it until you can reach and operate the pedals comfortably, without stretching. Keep enough clearance to depress each pedal fully. Do not move so close to the steering wheel that you lose the recommended airbag distance. The goal is not simply to touch a pedal; it is to reach and use the pedals comfortably while remaining seated back in the seat.
  3. Set seat height if it adjusts. Choose a position that gives you a clear view of the road and the vehicle’s instruments. There is no single height or seat position established for every vehicle and driver. If the seat has no height adjustment, do not assume that another control or accessory is a substitute; consult the manual for the adjustments that are available.
  4. Adjust the steering wheel if the vehicle allows it. Use the vehicle’s available tilt or telescoping adjustment to maintain comfortable control and a clear view while retaining the recommended airbag distance. Controls and adjustment ranges vary; follow the owner manual rather than assuming a particular lever, switch or direction. After moving the wheel, make sure it has not obstructed your view of the road or instruments.
  5. Fasten and check the seat belt. The shoulder belt should cross your chest and rest on your shoulder, away from your neck. The lap belt should be low and snug across your hips, not your stomach. Check both portions rather than judging the fit from the shoulder belt alone.
  6. Recheck the whole position. Confirm that you can reach and fully operate the pedals, see the road and instruments clearly, maintain the recommended airbag clearance and wear the belt in the right position. If one adjustment changes another, check them all again. For example, moving the seat to improve pedal reach may also change your distance from the wheel and where the belt crosses you.

Think of these checks as a connected setup rather than a list of independent preferences. A seat position that makes one control feel convenient is not enough if it compromises the other checks. The practical endpoint is a position in which you can operate the controls without stretching, stay back against the seat, see clearly, wear the belt as NHTSA describes and maintain the recommended space from the steering-wheel airbag cover.

How far should you sit from the steering-wheel airbag?

NHTSA recommends at least 10 inches between the driver’s breastbone and the steering-wheel airbag cover. It also advises moving the seat as far back as possible while remaining able to comfortably reach the pedals. The 10-inch figure is safety guidance, not a claim that every vehicle’s airbag system or interior is identical. See NHTSA’s “Vehicle Air Bags and Injury Prevention” guidance.

The distance is measured from your breastbone to the cover in the center of the steering wheel, not from your face, knees or the front edge of the seat. Treat the 10 inches as a minimum recommendation, not a target that requires you to move closer when there is room to sit farther back. NHTSA advises keeping as far back as possible while still comfortably reaching the pedals. The pedal-control condition matters: moving too far back to operate the pedals comfortably is not the instruction.

As NHTSA puts it: “Air bags are supplemental protection and are designed to work best in combination with seat belts.” Keep your belt fastened and allow space for the frontal airbag to deploy. Do not treat the airbag as a substitute for the seat belt or move close to the wheel to compensate for a poor fit. NHTSA reports that airbags have saved more than 50,000 lives over a 30-year period; its page does not state the statistic’s publication year.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NHTSA also says: “To minimize the potential of any air-bag-related injury, NHTSA still recommends keeping a 10-inch minimum between the air bag cover (in the center of the steering wheel for drivers and on the dashboard for the right front passenger), maintaining a proper seating position, and moving the seat as far back as possible (drivers should be able to comfortably reach the pedals).” That wording connects three checks: distance, posture and pedal reach. It is not a guarantee that a particular position eliminates risk, and it does not replace the instructions for a specific vehicle.

If you cannot retain the recommended distance and comfortably reach the pedals in your vehicle, do not assume that an improvised seating position or accessory is a safe fix. Check the owner manual and ask the vehicle manufacturer about the correct adjustment options for that model. A generic cushion or steering-wheel accessory is not established by this guidance as a solution.

How the seat belt should fit

Once the seat position is set, check both parts of the belt. NHTSA’s “Seat Belt Safety: Buckle Up America” guidance describes the shoulder belt crossing the chest and resting on the shoulder, away from the neck, and the lap belt sitting low and snug across the hips. A belt routed behind your back or under your arm, or a lap belt lying across your stomach, is not the fit described in that guidance.

Check the belt with your normal seated posture, not by leaning forward to make the belt seem to fit differently. The shoulder portion belongs across the chest and on the shoulder; the lap portion belongs low across the hips. Do not substitute a loose lap belt or move it up over the stomach. If moving the seat changes the belt’s path, settle back into the seat and check the fit again before driving.

Seat position and belt fit work together: changing the seat can alter where the belt crosses your body. Recheck the belt after moving the seat, and wear it whenever you drive. The belt and airbag are not competing safety measures. NHTSA describes airbags as supplemental protection designed to work best with seat belts, so the practical setup includes both a fastened, correctly positioned belt and room between the driver and the steering-wheel airbag cover.

How to check your finished position

Before setting off, use a short final check rather than relying on one impression of comfort. Sit fully back and upright. Confirm that the pedals are within comfortable reach and can be fully operated without stretching. Look at the road and the instruments from the settled driving position. Check that the wheel is positioned for comfortable control and does not interfere with your view. Confirm that the breastbone-to-airbag-cover distance is at least 10 inches, and recheck the shoulder and lap belt placement.

If one of these checks fails, make a small adjustment while parked and repeat the other checks. Do not assume that correcting pedal reach leaves the airbag distance or belt fit unchanged. Likewise, moving the wheel or changing seat height can change what you can see or how you sit. There is no universal setting to copy; the aim is to satisfy the checks together using the controls your car provides.

Comfort is relevant because the general guidance calls for comfortable pedal reach and a comfortable upright posture, but comfort by itself is not a safety specification. A position that feels familiar may still need adjustment if you are stretching to operate a pedal, sitting too close to the airbag cover, unable to see clearly, or wearing the belt incorrectly. Use those concrete checks instead of relying only on habit.

What to do if the adjustments are unfamiliar

Seat-height, lumbar-support, seat-back tilt and steering-wheel tilt or telescoping controls differ by vehicle. Use the owner manual to identify the controls and their intended operation; do not infer a model’s settings from another car. A Tesla Model 3 owner manual hosted by NHTSA, for example, describes an upright, comfortable position, feet on the floor, easy pedal reach and slightly bent arms while holding the wheel. That is a model-specific example, not a required posture specification for every vehicle: Tesla Model 3 owner-manual example.

The example is useful as an illustration of the kind of detail a vehicle manual may provide, not as a universal measurement. Do not use its directions to infer how a different model’s seat or steering-wheel controls work. Your manual is the place to confirm whether your particular car has height, lumbar, tilt or telescoping adjustments and how to operate them.

If you are comparing two vehicles, compare their actual adjustment options and manuals rather than assuming that either one has a standard control arrangement. For each vehicle, check whether its available settings let you maintain clear visibility, comfortable and complete pedal control, proper belt fit and the recommended airbag distance. The guidance does not identify one adjustment system as better than another, nor does it support a purchase recommendation for a generic accessory.

If your manual’s directions or your vehicle’s adjustment range do not let you combine clear visibility, comfortable pedal operation, proper belt fit and the recommended airbag distance, contact the vehicle manufacturer for model-specific guidance rather than guessing at a compromise. Do not try to resolve a conflict by sacrificing one of these checks without advice specific to the vehicle.

Adjusting your position during pregnancy

NHTSA advises pregnant drivers to wear a seat belt at every stage of pregnancy, keep as much distance as possible between the belly and the steering wheel, and still comfortably reach the wheel and pedals. Avoid reclining more than necessary. Wear the lap belt snug and low across the hips, below the belly, and position the shoulder belt across the chest and on the shoulder. The same guidance is available on NHTSA’s seat-belt page.

These points apply throughout pregnancy, not just at one stage. Keep the belt fastened and correctly placed while arranging the seat for comfortable control and as much space as possible between the belly and the steering wheel. The instruction to avoid unnecessary reclining remains relevant: do not use a reclined posture simply to create distance if it changes your ability to reach the wheel and pedals comfortably. Recheck the belt and driving position whenever you adjust the seat.

Do you need to buy anything to adjust your position?

No product purchase is required by the general guidance described here. The adjustments concern the vehicle’s existing seat, steering wheel, pedals and seat belt. Use the owner manual for model-specific directions; no particular manual purchase, cushion or wheel accessory is recommended as a general safety fix. If the available settings do not allow you to meet the checks, seek guidance from the vehicle manufacturer instead of treating an accessory as a substitute for model-specific advice.

Do I need a special cushion or steering-wheel accessory?

The guidance does not recommend a generic cushion or wheel accessory as a safety solution. Start with the vehicle’s existing adjustments and seek model-specific advice from the manufacturer if they do not allow a suitable position.

The Bottom Line

Park, sit fully back and upright, and adjust the seat for comfortable, complete pedal control and a clear view. Keep at least 10 inches between your breastbone and the steering-wheel airbag cover, wear the shoulder belt across your chest and on your shoulder and the lap belt low across your hips, and follow your owner manual for vehicle-specific controls. NHTSA says airbags are supplemental protection that work best with seat belts; keep the belt fastened.
