How Yakbike’s chainless drivetrain works
On a conventional bicycle or trike, a chain or belt carries the rider’s pedal force toward the driven wheel. In the Yakbike layout described by New Atlas, the pedals instead turn a generator. Electricity from the generator charges a battery, and the battery supplies the two motors mounted in the rear hubs.

New Atlas calls this a “stepless electronic drivetrain.” That phrase describes the reported arrangement; the article does not say Yakbike uses the Free Drive system, which it mentions only as a comparison.
Why use an electronic drivetrain on a cargo trike?
The article connects the drivetrain choice to the Yakbike’s particular layout. Its crankset is positioned directly in line with a flat-fronted cargo bed, while the front end leans into corners and the rear stays upright. A conventional chain or belt would need a mechanical route from the crankset toward the rear axle. The electrical generator-to-motor arrangement avoids that path, according to New Atlas.
