The Polestar 4’s most striking minimalist choice is the absence of a conventional rear window. A roof-mounted camera sends a live view to the digital rear-view mirror, while the cockpit relies on a small number of large displays and integrated software. It is not a screen-free car; it is a design that trades one familiar piece of glass for a different cabin layout.
Why doesn’t the Polestar 4 feature a rear window?
Polestar says the rear-window-free design carries forward an idea first shown on its Precept concept. The company’s explanation is that removing the window lets the panoramic glass roof extend farther over rear passengers, contributing to a brighter, more spacious cabin and added room or headroom behind them. Those are Polestar’s design claims; the available specifications do not independently measure the cabin effects.
Instead of looking through rear glass, the driver can view a high-definition live feed from a roof-mounted rear-facing camera in the digital rear-view mirror. The mirror can also switch to a conventional reflective view of rear-seat occupants. Polestar lists the mirror display at 8.9 inches and 1480 × 320 pixels; availability and equipment requirements vary by market and configuration. Polestar’s US support information describes the mirror’s two viewing modes, while its global safety page details the camera and display.
Minimalist cockpit, not a screenless one
Polestar’s current global specifications list a 15.4-inch centre display and a 10.2-inch driver display. The digital rear-view mirror is listed as an option, and equipment can depend on region. In the US specifications, a 14.7-inch head-up display and a 5.7-inch rear control and entertainment screen are listed for relevant configurations. These are market- and configuration-specific features, not a universal equipment list. Global specifications and US specifications are the appropriate references for a particular market.

The interface extends beyond the displays. Polestar describes integrated Google services, including Google Maps, and lists wireless Apple CarPlay among connected features. Service availability and equipment may differ by region or configuration, and the company’s feature descriptions are not independent usability testing. What the camera-based mirror means in practice
The system changes the source of the rearward view: it is a camera image on a screen rather than a direct view through a rear window. The ability to switch to reflective mode offers a way to see rear occupants, but it does not restore a conventional rear-window view. The sources cited here describe Polestar’s system and claims, not independent comparative tests of visibility in rain, darkness, glare or other driving conditions.

Keep the rear-view camera separate from the built-in dashcam. Polestar describes the mirror camera as providing a live rearward view; its dashcam app records forward-facing video. The dashcam requires a memory card, which Polestar says is not included. The cited information does not establish a compatible card format or capacity, so check the owner’s manual for the relevant model year before buying one. Charging figures: US manufacturer claims
For the US market, Polestar’s support FAQ states up to 200 kW DC charging and up to 11 kW AC charging as standard. It gives a 10–80% charging time of 30 minutes specifically when using a 200 kW rapid DC charger. These are manufacturer-published figures, not independent test results; charging performance depends on conditions and the charger used. Do not assume the same figures or equipment apply in every market. The US Polestar 4 support FAQ provides the stated figures.

What the minimalist design does—and does not—establish
The Polestar 4 makes a clear packaging and interface choice: replace the conventional rear window with a camera-and-screen system, extend the glass roof as Polestar intends, and organize the cabin around prominent digital displays. The manufacturer presents the roof and cabin benefits as reasons for the design, but the available information does not establish that rearward visibility or passenger comfort is better than in a comparable SUV. Those questions require independent evaluation in the conditions that matter to a driver or passenger.
