How the Koenigsegg Gemera’s 600-hp Three-Cylinder Engine Works

The original Gemera’s 600-hp TFG is a twin-turbo 2.0-liter three-cylinder with camless Freevalve valve control. Its engine rating is distinct from the hybrid system’s combined output and the later Gemera’s V8 configuration.

The original Koenigsegg Gemera’s “Tiny Friendly Giant” (TFG) is a 2.0-liter, twin-turbo three-cylinder rated by Koenigsegg at 600 hp. Its defining engineering feature is Freevalve’s camless, independently variable valve control. That 600-hp figure describes the engine alone—not the output of the Gemera’s hybrid system—and the current Gemera configuration shown by Koenigsegg is different, using a V8 and electric motor.

What is the Gemera’s TFG engine?

TFG stands for “Tiny Friendly Giant.” Koenigsegg and its sister company Freevalve developed the engine for the original Gemera concept announced in 2020. It is a compact, mid-mounted 2.0-liter inline three-cylinder with twin turbochargers and dry-sump lubrication. Koenigsegg’s technical specifications list 600 hp at 7,500 rpm, 600 Nm of torque from 2,000 to 7,000 rpm, and an 8,500-rpm redline.

The combination of a small displacement and a high published output is striking, but the engine is more than its peak number. Koenigsegg also specifies a 9.5:1 compression ratio, a 95 mm bore and 93.5 mm stroke. Its listed weight is 70 kg. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test measurements. Koenigsegg’s Gemera technical specifications provide the figures.

How does Freevalve change the way it breathes?

A conventional engine uses camshafts with fixed profiles to determine when valves open and close and how far they lift. Freevalve describes its system as camless and fully variable: valve events can be controlled independently instead of being locked to a conventional camshaft profile. This gives the engine’s control system a different way to manage airflow through the cylinders.

Koenigsegg’s published specification also lists in-cylinder pressure sensing for closed-loop combustion control. The available official descriptions do not provide a complete TFG actuator schematic, so it is not possible to detail the specific hardware arrangement here. Nor do these materials establish a measured, TFG-specific performance gain attributable to the valve system alone. Freevalve’s technology overview and its 2020 Gemera technology announcement describe the camless approach.

How did the original Gemera’s hybrid drivetrain work?

The TFG was one part of a hybrid system, not the car’s sole source of power. In the original announced layout, the mid-mounted engine and an electric motor sent power to the front axle through a propshaft, while two other electric motors powered the rear wheels. Koenigsegg called this arrangement Koenigsegg Direct Drive.

Koenigsegg gave the original 2020 Gemera a combined output of 1,700 bhp. That is a launch-era hybrid-system figure; it must not be confused with the TFG’s 600 hp engine-only rating. The 2020 Gemera launch announcement describes that configuration.

What happened to the three-cylinder in the later Gemera?

Koenigsegg’s history says the Gemera was revealed in production form in July 2023 and describes a client-specification version with a Hot-Vee V8 and Dark Matter electric motor. The company’s current Gemera page lists 2,300 hp combined for that later configuration. It is a different powertrain from the original TFG announcement: the current headline system output does not come from the three-cylinder.

The changes are easiest to understand by keeping the engine, output basis and drivetrain layout separate:

Configuration Engine and motor arrangement Published output Drivetrain description
Original Gemera announcement (2020) 2.0-liter twin-turbo TFG three-cylinder plus three electric motors TFG: 600 hp engine-only; system: 1,700 bhp combined Koenigsegg Direct Drive concept; engine and one e-motor drove the front axle through a propshaft, with two motors at the rear
Later/current Gemera configuration shown by Koenigsegg Hot-Vee V8 and Dark Matter e-motor 2,300 hp combined Light Speed Tourbillon Transmission and Dark Matter configuration

The later configuration is described on Koenigsegg’s history page and current Gemera overview. These published figures describe different configurations and output bases, not a direct engine-to-engine comparison.

What do the efficiency and emissions claims establish?

In its 2020 press information, Koenigsegg estimated that the TFG could use 15–20% less fuel than a typical modern 2.0-liter four-cylinder with direct injection and variable camshaft, and presented low emissions and regulatory readiness as design goals. The cited material does not provide an independent test method for that fuel-use estimate, so it should be read as a manufacturer estimate, not a verified real-world result.

Koenigsegg founder and CEO Christian von Koenigsegg said the TFG was designed for efficiency, low emissions and compact packaging, and expected it to meet foreseeable emissions regulations. Those comments state the company’s aims and expectations; they do not independently demonstrate achieved emissions performance or regulatory compliance. The company’s 2020 TFG press information contains the estimate and statement.
