The BMW 7 Series offers two distinct forms of driving assistance, not unrestricted self-driving: Highway Assistant is Level 2 and requires the driver to keep watching the road, while Personal Pilot L3 can take over in limited motorway conditions but still requires a prompt response when asked to resume control. Availability depends on the market and vehicle configuration.
What “self-driving” means in the BMW 7 Series
“Self-driving” is a convenient shorthand, but BMW describes two different systems: BMW Highway Assistant (Level 2) and BMW Personal Pilot L3 (Level 3). Neither makes the 7 Series a driverless car. The key distinction is who must monitor the driving task: with Level 2, the driver remains responsible throughout; in qualifying Level 3 conditions, BMW says the system takes over the driving task temporarily.
BMW’s November 2023 announcement put the distinction this way: “The crucial difference between Level 2 and Level 3 is that with Level 2 (partially automated driving) responsibility continues to lie with the driver at all times.” That is BMW’s description, not an independent assessment by a regulator or SAE.
How the two systems differ
| System | Automation | Conditions BMW describes | Driver’s responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMW Highway Assistant | Level 2 | Suitable motorways; hands-free steering for periods, with automatic lane-change support when traffic permits. | Keep watching the road, monitor traffic, and remain ready to take over. |
| BMW Personal Pilot L3 | Level 3 | Specified situations including slow-moving motorway traffic on structurally separated carriageways, at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph). | May turn attention to secondary activities inside the car while the system is active, but must respond to a takeover request or resume driving when the qualifying road segment ends. |
These are BMW’s descriptions of the systems; they do not establish that either feature is available on every 7 Series, in every market, or on every road matching a general description.

What the driver can—and cannot—do
With Highway Assistant, keep your attention on driving
Hands-free steering does not mean eyes-off driving. BMW says the Level 2 system can assist with steering on suitable motorways and support a lane change when traffic permits, but the driver must continue monitoring the road and be prepared to take control.
With Personal Pilot L3, attention can shift only while the system is operating in its defined conditions
BMW describes L3 as allowing the driver to turn attention to secondary activities inside the vehicle in its qualifying conditions. That permission is conditional: the driver still needs to take control when prompted and when the car leaves the qualifying road segment. BMW’s 25 June 2024 release says: “However, the driver must always be prepared to reassume control within a few seconds when prompted by the car, for example when there are roadworks.”

BMW’s November 2023 announcement said that if the driver failed to respond as required to a takeover prompt, the car would be brought to a controlled stop. Treat that as a statement about the system described in that announcement, not a guarantee for every configuration or current model year.
Where Personal Pilot L3 was announced, and what is known about price
BMW announced Personal Pilot L3 in November 2023 as an option for specified new 7 Series models in Germany, priced at €6,000 including VAT at launch. That release excluded the i7 eDrive50 and i7 M70 xDrive from the ordering availability it described. BMW’s June 2024 release discussed the combined Level 2 and Level 3 offering, and BMW’s overview describes the L3 rollout as initially in Germany. These are dated launch details, not confirmation of current price, availability, or eligibility. Check with BMW or a dealer for the relevant country, model year, trim, and order specification before assuming a particular car has L3.

How BMW described the L3 technology
In its November 2023 release, BMW said the announced system used cameras, ultrasonic and radar sensors, a 3D lidar sensor, precise GPS positioning, a live HD map, a computing platform, and a 5G link to BMW Cloud. This is the manufacturer’s description of the announced system, not an independently audited specification for every vehicle or a promise of performance in all circumstances.

The cited BMW materials do not provide an independent named safety or performance statistic for these systems. Their feature descriptions and stated operating limits are not a substitute for a measured safety comparison, and they should not be read as evidence that the vehicle can handle every motorway situation without driver involvement.
