How the Bitter SC Was Built: Opel Roots, Italian Design and the Isuzu Question

The Bitter SC paired Opel Senator A mechanicals with Italian-influenced styling. Here’s what is known about its body production, Michelotti’s contribution, the Isuzu confusion and its uncertain production total.

The Bitter SC was built around the Opel Senator A: Erich Bitter selected the Opel as its mechanical foundation, while the car’s styling drew on Italian design influences. Turin firm OCRA made the first SC bodies, according to a later account, before production shifted to Maggiore in 1982. Isuzu is not documented as an SC design, engineering or manufacturing partner; the Isuzu connection concerns a reported sales plan for a different, later Bitter model.

What did “built around an Opel Senator” mean?

The SC was a low-volume successor to the Bitter CD, but Bitter chose a different Opel starting point for it. After Opel ended production of the Diplomat, which had underpinned the CD, Bitter selected the Senator A as the basis for the new car. In an August 2018 interview with Opel Post, he summarized the arrangement this way: “Like the CD before it, the SC took its styling cues from Italian-designed cars, while it continued to be an Opel under the skin.”

That distinction is the key to understanding how the SC was built. The Senator A supplied the mechanical foundation; Bitter’s project gave that foundation a different body and identity. Calling the SC an Opel-based Bitter describes the relationship more precisely than treating it as either an ordinary Senator or a wholly independent car. The evidence establishes the donor model and Bitter’s description of the relationship, but does not provide a complete factory record of every component carried over or changed.

A reference account describes the early SC as using the Senator’s 2,986 cc inline-six, rated at up to 180 CV. It reports that a 3,848 cc engine rated at 210 CV was offered in 1984. Those figures offer a snapshot of the reported engine range, not a complete factory specification record: they should not be read as applying to every SC, every market or every model year.

How did the SC’s body production proceed?

The available manufacturing account describes a sequence of specialist body production rather than a single, documented factory chain. BilNorge’s 2007 history says OCRA in Turin made the first SC bodies. It reports that production moved to Maggiore in 1982, after 79 completed units. That is useful detail about the early run, but it comes from a secondary history, not a primary Bitter production ledger.

The figure of 79 needs particular care: the account associates it with the change in body production, not with the SC’s total production. It does not establish that 79 was the total number of cars made by OCRA, nor does it settle how many complete SCs were ultimately built. Likewise, the reported move to Maggiore is a manufacturing detail; it does not, by itself, show that the car’s underlying mechanical design changed at that point.

The source record therefore supports a limited but useful reconstruction: Bitter selected the Senator A as the mechanical basis; OCRA made the earliest bodies, according to BilNorge; and body production reportedly shifted to Maggiore in 1982. It does not establish the full division of labor between Bitter, Opel and the body firms, or document each assembly stage. Those details should not be filled in by assuming a conventional mass-production process.

What was Italian about the design?

Bitter’s own account describes the SC’s styling as drawing cues from Italian-designed cars. That is evidence of an influence, not proof that the SC copied a particular model. The wording also matters: Bitter spoke of styling cues while emphasizing that the car remained Opel “under the skin.” His description separates the visual direction from the mechanical base instead of assigning the entire car to one design source.

The archive of Giovanni Michelotti lists the Bitter SC and characterizes Michelotti’s work as aesthetic revision and production. This supports naming Michelotti as a contributor to the project. It does not establish him as the SC’s sole designer, and it does not justify reducing a collaborative process to a single-author story. The most defensible account is that the SC had Italian design influence and that Michelotti’s archive records his contribution, while the precise authorship of every element is not established by these sources.

For readers trying to distinguish design authorship from construction, these are separate questions. A stylistic influence identifies a broad design lineage; a named contributor indicates a documented role; and a body producer identifies a manufacturing responsibility. None of those facts alone proves that one company or designer handled the entire project. For the SC, the evidence supports all three categories only in part: Bitter described Italian influence, Michelotti’s archive lists a contribution, and BilNorge reports the body-production sequence.

Did Isuzu help make the Bitter SC?

The documented SC foundation is Opel, not Isuzu. The Isuzu reference associated with Bitter concerns a reported idea to use Isuzu’s US dealer network to sell the later Bitter Type 3. That is a sales and distribution connection tied to another model, not evidence of Isuzu participation in SC design, engineering, body production or assembly.

Keeping the models separate prevents a tempting but unsupported inference. A company’s possible involvement in selling a later Bitter car does not establish that it helped build an earlier one. The Type 3 dealer-network account should not be used to rewrite the SC’s documented relationship with the Senator A or the reported involvement of Italian body and design contributors.

The available account is also narrower than a complete history of the Type 3 arrangement: it describes a contemplated US sales plan, not proof that the plan was implemented. The relevant conclusion for the SC is straightforward: no Isuzu role in building or designing it is established here.

How does the SC differ from the earlier Bitter CD?

The CD is useful context because it shows how Bitter’s approach continued while the Opel basis changed. Opel Post reports that Bitter said the CD was developed with Baur and introduced at the 1973 IAA; he recalled that 395 examples were made. Stellantis Media’s Opel history also reports 395 Bitter CDs built by Baur through 1979. For the SC, Bitter instead identified the Senator A as the base and described the styling as Italian-influenced.

Comparison point Bitter CD Bitter SC
Opel relationship Based on the Diplomat, according to Bitter’s account of the model’s predecessor role. Based on the Senator A, which Bitter selected after Diplomat production ended.
Body production information Stellantis Media reports that Baur built the cars through 1979. BilNorge’s 2007 history reports early bodies by OCRA in Turin and a move to Maggiore in 1982 after 79 completed units.
Styling and contributors Bitter said the CD was developed with Baur; the sources summarized here do not name a separate SC-style contributor for the CD. Bitter described Italian design influence; Giovanni Michelotti’s archive lists the SC and records aesthetic revision and production.
Production figure 395, as recalled by Bitter in the 2018 Opel Post interview and also reported by Stellantis Media. No definitive total is established; available reference figures conflict.

The comparison shows continuity in the idea of combining Opel mechanicals with a distinct Bitter body, but it should not be stretched into a trim-by-trim or specification comparison. The evidence cited here does not provide comparable complete model-year records for both cars. It also distinguishes the confidence of the production figures: the CD’s 395 examples are reported by both Bitter and Stellantis Media, while the SC total remains unsettled.

How many Bitter SCs were built?

A definitive total cannot be stated from the available figures. A reference account gives 525, but its listed body-style figures do not add up to that total. Other accounts also report different totals. Without a reliable primary production record to resolve the discrepancies, 525 should not be presented as a settled factory number.

Bitter recalled in the 2018 Opel Post interview that roughly 50 percent more SCs were made than CDs. Since he gave the CD total as 395, that comparison conveys the approximate scale he remembered, but it is a rounded retrospective statement rather than an audited production ledger. It cannot repair the conflicting SC totals or justify presenting a calculated figure as exact.

The figures often mentioned in accounts of the SC refer to different things and should not be conflated:

  • 79: BilNorge’s 2007 history reports this number of completed units before the body-production move from OCRA to Maggiore.
  • Roughly 50 percent more than the CD: Bitter’s retrospective comparison in the 2018 Opel Post interview, not a ledger total.
  • 525: A total stated by one reference account, but inconsistent with that account’s own body-style breakdown and at odds with other reported totals.

These numbers do not provide three competing answers to the same question. One describes a reported early production threshold, one is a rounded comparison, and one is a disputed overall total. Treating each according to what it actually measures is more informative than selecting one as definitive.

What can be stated confidently—and what remains uncertain?

The strongest direct account of the SC’s concept is Bitter’s August 2018 interview with Opel Post. It establishes his description of the Senator A foundation and Italian styling influence, as well as his recollection that SC production exceeded CD production by roughly half. The Michelotti archive provides a named design contribution. The body-production details come from BilNorge’s 2007 secondary account, while the conflicting overall totals appear in reference accounts rather than a verified production ledger.

  • Well supported: the SC was based on Opel Senator A mechanicals; Bitter described Italian design influence; and Michelotti’s archive lists the SC as a project involving aesthetic revision and production.
  • Reported by a secondary history: OCRA in Turin made the first bodies and production moved to Maggiore in 1982 after 79 completed units.
  • Not established: that Isuzu designed, engineered or built the SC; that Michelotti was its sole designer; or a definitive total number of SCs produced.

Read together, these distinctions offer a grounded account without pretending the surviving information is a complete factory history. The SC’s identity is clearest where the evidence is direct: an Opel mechanical base, Bitter’s Italian-influenced styling direction, and a documented contributor and reported body-production sequence. More exact claims about authorship, full production responsibilities or total output need records beyond the figures cited here.
