In the flight design described in 2022, distributed propellers provide vertical lift; then the airframe tilts while the cabin stays oriented, and the vehicle’s side panels serve as the upper and lower wings of a biplane.
How do the Model A’s side panels become wings?
New Atlas’s October 2022 description of Alef Aeronautics’ design reports eight propellers for vertical lift. During the transition to forward flight, the airframe tilts and the passenger cabin rotates sideways while remaining stabilized. The body’s side panels then act as two lifting surfaces, one above the other, with the cabin between them—hence the biplane arrangement.
This is not simply a conventional car body with wings that unfold. The reported concept assigns different jobs to the distributed propellers and the side panels: the propellers lift the aircraft vertically, while the panels provide wing surfaces for forward flight. The distinguishing feature is how the vehicle’s body panels are repurposed and how the cabin is kept oriented as the airframe tilts. New Atlas’s design report describes the configuration, but does not independently establish its aerodynamic efficiency or validated performance.
What range did Alef announce?
When Alef introduced the Model A publicly in 2022, the company advertised 200 miles (322 km) of road range and 110 miles (177 km) of flight range. Those are manufacturer claims, not independently verified test results in the sources reviewed. Alef also announced a $300,000 pre-sale price in 2022; that historical figure does not establish current pricing or availability. Alef’s announcement is the source for those original figures.

What is known about development and availability?
In December 2025, Alef said it had begun hand-assembling early Model A Ultralight examples, with a small number of customers intended to receive them for controlled real-world testing. That company announcement describes a planned testing milestone; it does not establish that the aircraft were delivered or that the Model A is broadly available. Alef’s company updates are the source for the announcement.
A preorder should not be treated as a vehicle sale or a guarantee of a production place. Alef’s preorder terms say a preorder does not guarantee supply, price, production slot, delivery date, or configuration. Prospective customers should read the terms that apply to their own preorder rather than infer a commitment from an announcement or reservation. Alef’s preorder terms set out those limits.

Does the FAA registry show that the Model A is approved to fly?
No such conclusion follows from the registry entry cited here. The FAA registry record accessed for this article lists N5463A as an Alef Aeronautics Model Zero 24, described as an electric rotorcraft, with a registration certificate issued April 14, 2026. Model Zero 24 is not the Model A. The registry also cautions that registry information alone does not determine an aircraft’s airworthiness or current configuration. The FAA registry record therefore is not proof that the Model A is approved for unrestricted operation.
Alef’s 2026 SEC filing exhibit describes the company’s view of a regulatory path involving ultralight aircraft and planned light-sport aircraft. That is the company’s statement in a securities filing, not an FAA ruling granting approval for unrestricted passenger operations. The SEC filing exhibit should be read in that context.

What the design description does—and does not—establish
The side-panel biplane layout explains the central idea: vertical lift and forward flight are handled differently, while the cabin is stabilized through the transition. The available descriptions do not establish independently validated range, aerodynamic efficiency, safety, or practical access to takeoff and landing sites. The announced figures and development milestones should be understood as company claims unless supported by independent evidence.
