How the 2,600-hp SRT Tomahawk VGT’s Compressed-Air System Works

The SRT Tomahawk VGT is a virtual concept whose compressed-air system is specified to drive the front wheels and operate aero and suspension systems. Its X variant is rated at 2,590 hp total, including auxiliary drive.

The SRT Tomahawk Vision Gran Turismo is a virtual concept car created for the Gran Turismo series, not a production Dodge or SRT. Its most extreme version, the Tomahawk X, is specified at 2,590 hp with its auxiliary pneumatic drive contributing to total peak output; its V10 alone is listed at 2,168 hp. The compressed-air system is also described as powering front-wheel drive, active aerodynamic surfaces and variable-rate suspension.

What is the SRT Tomahawk VGT?

The Tomahawk is a future-facing Vision Gran Turismo concept designed for Gran Turismo 6. Gran Turismo says it was released in the game on June 26, 2015. The official concept description presents it as an exploration of extreme performance and proposed technology, not as a road car that was built and validated for sale.

The concept centers on a 6.98-liter, 144-degree V10 mounted mid-rear. Its pneumatic auxiliary system is intended to add functions the engine and rear-wheel-drive layout do not provide by themselves. The official description calls the result a hybrid system, but its pneumatic components should not be mistaken for a conventional production hybrid drivetrain with documented real-world implementation.

Gran Turismo 6 was released for PlayStation 3, and Stellantis said the Tomahawk could be driven in that game. Gran Turismo’s official 7 car list, showing the roster as of August 2026, includes Tomahawk S and GTS-R entries.

How does the compressed-air hybrid system work?

In the concept description, pneumatic power units store compressed air in two composite cylinders. The stored energy can be sent to the front wheels, supplementing the mid-rear V10’s drive to the rear and giving the car all-wheel-drive capability when rear traction is limited. The system is therefore more than a power figure: it is presented as a way to distribute drive to the front axle as well.

The same pneumatic hardware is assigned other jobs. Gran Turismo describes it as operating active aerodynamic surfaces and a variable-rate pneumatic suspension. The 2015 announcement also mentions pneumatic actuation of aero panels and a G-suit pressurization function. These are design claims for a fictional game concept; the official materials do not document a working production system or independent engineering validation.

How much power and speed are claimed for each Tomahawk?

The 2015 official announcement gives total peak output with auxiliary drive for all three variants. It lists engine-only output separately for the X, which matters when interpreting the headline figure: 2,590 hp is the X’s combined peak output, not the V10’s standalone rating.

Variant Total peak output with auxiliary drive Engine-only output Announced curb weight Stated top speed
Tomahawk S 1,007 hp Not stated in the 2015 Gran Turismo announcement 2,026 lb Over 250 mph
Tomahawk GTS-R 1,450 hp Not stated in the 2015 Gran Turismo announcement 1,459 lb Over 300 mph
Tomahawk X 2,590 hp 2,168 hp Not stated in the 2015 Gran Turismo announcement 404 mph

These are official fictional specifications in Gran Turismo’s June 2, 2015 announcement, not figures from comparable road tests. The announcement assigns 404 mph to the X as a concept top-speed figure; it is not a verified real-world speed record. Its X engine-only rating of 2,168 hp is lower than its total 2,590-hp figure because the latter includes auxiliary drive.

Why is the Tomahawk described as “ultra-low”?

The Tomahawk’s low stance and extreme proportions are part of the concept’s visual and aerodynamic character. The official sources describe the vehicle as a future-facing design and specify performance and pneumatic functions, but they do not provide a quantified ride height in the cited materials. “Ultra-low” should therefore be read as a description of its concept styling, not a published measurement.

Where can you drive the Tomahawk?

The original game context is Gran Turismo 6 on PlayStation 3. Gran Turismo’s current official Gran Turismo 7 roster listing, as of August 2026, includes the Tomahawk S and GTS-R; that listing does not establish that every Tomahawk variant is available in GT7.
