The 2026 Honda Prelude uses Honda’s two-motor e:HEV hybrid system, pairing a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle direct-injection gasoline engine with traction and generator motors. Its S+ Shift feature simulates an eight-speed shifting experience; it is not a conventional eight-speed gearbox. Honda’s separate all-new “next-generation hybrid system,” announced in 2026 for a planned 2027 rollout, is a future program—not the Prelude’s identified powertrain.
How does the 2026 Honda Prelude hybrid system work?
In Honda’s Japan-market launch announcement, the Prelude combines a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle direct-injection gasoline engine with two electric motors: a traction motor and a generator motor. Honda describes this as a further-advanced version of its e:HEV hybrid system. The Japan release also specifies front-wheel drive and seating for four; those details should not be assumed to describe every market’s version. Honda’s Prelude launch release
Honda’s general e:HEV description explains the roles of the two motors and the system’s operating modes. It is a description of Honda’s architecture, not a market-by-market account of every Prelude control detail. Honda’s e:HEV explainer
The traction motor drives the wheels
The traction motor is connected to the driveshaft and propels the car. The generator motor is connected to the engine; it can convert engine output into electricity for the traction motor or to charge the battery.

- Includes metal inlet markings such as emblems and window mask seals
e:HEV switches among three drive modes
- EV drive: The battery supplies electricity to the traction motor, which moves the car.
- Hybrid drive: The engine turns the generator to produce electricity for motor drive. The battery can also supplement power during acceleration.
- Engine drive: At high-speed cruising, the engine connects directly to the driveshaft.
During deceleration, the traction motor can generate electricity from the wheels’ movement and store it in the battery. This is regenerative generation. Honda’s overview explains these modes generally; the Prelude launch release does not publish a complete market-specific control map.
Does the Prelude have a real eight-speed transmission?
No. Honda says e:HEV has no mechanical transmission, while the Prelude’s S+ Shift feature creates the sensation of a virtual eight-speed transmission. The “eight-speed” description refers to simulated shifts, not eight physical gears or a conventional automatic gearbox. Honda’s launch release

That distinction matters because the powertrain’s motor-driven operation and S+ Shift’s driving effects are separate things: the traction motor propels the car in the relevant modes, while the feature coordinates controls to make acceleration and deceleration feel more like stepped gear changes.
What does Honda S+ Shift do?
Honda announced S+ Shift in December 2024 as a function for its two-motor e:HEV system, naming the Prelude as its first planned application. The company says it controls engine RPM during acceleration and deceleration to create direct response and a sharper shift sensation. Paddle shifters let the driver request simulated upshifts and downshifts, despite the absence of a mechanical transmission. Honda’s S+ Shift announcement

The feature also coordinates motor control with engine sound through Active Sound Control and with responsive meter displays. These are ways Honda shapes the driving experience; they do not establish independent performance or fuel-economy results.
Drive modes and coasting control
The Japan-market launch release lists Sport, GT and Comfort modes, plus an Individual mode that allows customization in six areas: powertrain, steering, suspension, meter display, engine sound and adaptive cruise control. It also describes Coasting Control: when the driver uses the deceleration selector in D range, the car can decelerate as if in neutral. Honda’s launch release

Why “next-generation hybrid” can mean two different things
Honda used “next-generation” in discussing e:HEV technologies and S+ Shift in December 2024. In a May 2026 business briefing, however, Honda used “next-generation hybrid system” for a distinct all-new system and platform program that it planned to begin launching in 2027. The briefing does not identify that future system as the Prelude’s powertrain. Honda’s May 2026 business briefing
Honda set targets for the future program of more than 30% lower system cost than its system introduced in 2023, and more than 10% higher fuel economy for next-generation models when the system is combined with the next-generation platform and a new electric AWD unit. Those are company targets for future models, not measured results for the Prelude.

What is confirmed about the Japan-market launch?
Honda announced that Japan sales would begin September 5, 2025. Its September 4 launch release listed a manufacturer suggested retail price of 6,179,800 yen, including Japan’s 10% consumption tax. Honda said registration-related costs and insurance were excluded and that individual sales companies set their prices. The same release stated a sales plan of 300 units per month; that was a plan, not a reported sales result. These figures and specifications are Japan-specific and should not be applied to another market without a local source. Honda’s launch release
