That is less than the 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1’s 1,064 hp, but more horsepower than the 2026 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing’s 668 hp. These selected production-car examples show where the GTD sits by manufacturer-rated output—not a definitive ranking of every American V8 or a controlled comparison of performance.
How the Mustang GTD compares on power
Using the manufacturers’ published ratings for these three 2026 models, the Corvette ZR1 leads in both horsepower and torque. The GTD sits between the ZR1 and the CT5-V Blackwing in horsepower; its torque is nearly level with the Cadillac’s.

All output figures are manufacturer-published ratings, not results from a shared independent test. Ford’s current 2026 Mustang GTD specifications, Chevrolet Canada’s 2026 Corvette ZR1 page, and Cadillac’s 2026 CT5-V Blackwing specifications provide the figures above.
GTD vs. Corvette ZR1: the ZR1 has the higher rating
Chevrolet rates the 2026 Corvette ZR1’s twin-turbo 5.5-liter LT7 at 1,064 hp and 828 lb-ft. Against the GTD’s 815 hp and 664 lb-ft, that is a difference of 249 hp and 164 lb-ft in the ZR1’s favor. Chevrolet calls the LT7 the most powerful V8 ever in a production car from a North American auto manufacturer. That is Chevrolet’s stated, specifically scoped claim—not a universal ranking of every American V8, including truck, crate, or modified engines.

The cars also use different layouts: Ford describes the GTD as a front-engine Mustang coupe with a rear transaxle, while the ZR1 is a mid-engine Corvette. Their ratings establish which engine makes more stated power; they do not, by themselves, establish which car is quicker, faster around a track, or better to drive.
GTD vs. CT5-V Blackwing: coupe and sedan, nearly even torque
Cadillac rates the CT5-V Blackwing’s supercharged 6.2-liter V8 at 668 hp and 659 lb-ft. The GTD rating is 147 hp higher, while the Cadillac is just 5 lb-ft lower in torque. The comparison is as much about vehicle role as engine output: the GTD is a track-focused coupe, while the Blackwing is a high-performance sedan offered with a six-speed manual and an available 10-speed automatic.

What the GTD’s performance claims do—and do not—show
Ford lists the GTD’s peak output as 815 hp at 7,400 rpm and 664 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm, plus a 202 mph top speed and a Nürburgring lap of 6:40.835. Those are Ford’s published specifications and performance claims. The cited Chevrolet and Cadillac specifications do not provide equivalent results gathered under a common track, tire, weather, vehicle-configuration, and test-method protocol, so the GTD’s figures cannot establish that it beats either rival in a direct performance ranking.
Horsepower and torque answer different parts of the comparison: horsepower is a measure of power, while torque describes twisting force. Neither figure alone captures how a car delivers power, its gearing, traction, mass, chassis, or intended use. A meaningful overall performance verdict needs comparable vehicle tests, not a simple sort of manufacturer ratings.

How broad is “America’s most powerful V8s”?
This comparison covers three selected current production cars, not every V8 made by an American automaker. The ZR1’s record claim is limited to Chevrolet’s wording about production cars from North American manufacturers. No comprehensive ranking across cars, trucks, crate engines, and modified vehicles is established by the specifications cited here.
Ford’s 2024 launch announcement gave the GTD’s 815-hp and 664-lb-ft rating and attributed this comparison to Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer Greg Goodall: “GTD’s heart is its supercharged 5.2-liter V8, packing more horsepower per liter than the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.” That is Ford’s own comparative claim, rather than an independent finding.
