Germany is active in solid-state battery research, manufacturing-process development and automotive-linked cell testing—but the available evidence does not establish mass production of German-developed solid-state car batteries. Fraunhofer institutes are working on materials and production methods, while Volkswagen Group’s PowerCo tested a QuantumScape cell in Salzgitter. These are meaningful steps, not proof that solid-state batteries are ready for broad commercial use.

What does “progress” mean in Germany’s solid-state battery work?

Solid-state battery development covers several distinct stages: laboratory research into materials, work on manufacturing processes, pilot-scale equipment for making complete cells, and testing cells for possible automotive use. Progress at one stage does not demonstrate that cells are being made at commercial scale. The German examples currently documented span research, process development, pilot infrastructure and cell testing.

Stage German example What the evidence establishes
Materials research Fraunhofer IWS and partners; Fraunhofer ISC’s FUNCY-SSB project Research projects and stated technical aims
Manufacturing-process development Fraunhofer ILT laser-processing work Potential approaches to production challenges, not a completed industrial solution
Pilot infrastructure Fraunhofer FFB’s Münster PreFab A pilot-scale sample line for complete battery cells
Automotive-linked cell testing PowerCo testing a QuantumScape cell in Salzgitter A company-reported endurance test, not series production

What solid-state battery research is under way?

Lithium-sulfur cells and reduced electrolyte content

Fraunhofer IWS and partners are investigating a lithium-sulfur solid-state cell architecture intended to reduce electrolyte content. The work is associated with AnSiLiS, supported by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, and TALISSMAN, supported through Horizon Europe. High energy density, longer cycle life and enhanced safety are project goals, not demonstrated results.

The FUNCY-SSB collaboration

Coordinated by Fraunhofer ISC, FUNCY-SSB brings together the University of Oslo, Slovenia’s National Institute of Chemistry, German companies cylib and EurA, Norway’s Morrow Technologies and an associated French partner. The Fraunhofer ISC project page lists a project period from September 2024 through August 2027 and total funding of €1,648,035.

Why is manufacturing still difficult?

In a February 2026 article, Fraunhofer ILT said solid-state batteries had not reached industrial maturity. It identifies handling lithium metal and providing specialized production environments as manufacturing challenges. Depending on the materials used, production may require dry rooms or inert-gas environments, as well as process strategies suited to the cells’ materials and interfaces.

Fraunhofer ILT discusses laser techniques as possible ways to help bridge laboratory work and industrial production. These include selectively sintering solid electrolytes, structuring interfaces and cutting ductile metals. They are potential process tools under development, not evidence that the scale-up problem has been solved.

Does Germany have a solid-state battery factory?

Fraunhofer FFB’s Münster PreFab has a pilot-scale sample line for producing complete battery cells. The institute describes the planned FFB Fab as research infrastructure where manufacturing processes can be scaled, automated and tested under industrial conditions, with development aimed at production lines of up to gigawatt scale. Fraunhofer FFB said in April 2025 that the planned facility was due for completion at the end of 2027. That was a stated plan, not confirmation of completion or of commercial solid-state output.

The distinction matters: the PreFab is a pilot-scale cell-manufacturing line, while the FFB Fab is intended to support research into production processes. Neither description establishes a German commercial factory making solid-state cells at gigawatt scale.

SolidSafe BMX 10K Semi-Solid MagSafe Magnetic Power Bank, 10000mAh (Blue)
  • SEMI-SOLID-STATE SAFETY, BUILT FOR TRAVEL: Semi-solid-state cells hold a fraction of the flammable liquid in ordinary lithium-ion and resist thermal failure. In internal testing, the cells were puncture, cut and drill tested with no fire. The aluminum housing is highly thermally conductive, helping draw heat away from the cells and dissipate it during charging. Under 100Wh, it's airline carry-on ready.
  • ALL-DAY POWER, STILL POCKETABLE: A full 10,000mAh gives a typical iPhone roughly 1.5 to 2 charges - plenty for long travel days, events and back-to-back workdays without chasing an outlet. The dense semi-solid state design (a paired 5,000mAh + 5,000mAh layout) keeps the pack slim enough to slip into a jacket pocket or bag. The built-in lanyard doubles as a USB-C cable, so a charging cord is always attached - nothing extra to pack or lose.
  • QI2-CERTIFIED 15W MAGNETIC CHARGING: A strong, precisely aligned magnet snaps onto iPhone 17, 16, 15, 14, 13 and 12 with precise alignment and a strong hold, so you can keep using your phone while it charges. As a Qi2-certified, MagSafe-compatible charger, the magnetic connection keeps the charger aligned while you scroll, text, or move.
  • DUAL USB-C, UP TO 30W OUTPUT: Two USB-C ports let you charge several devices at once and deliver up to 30W of fast wired power for phones, earbuds and tablets. The same port also refills the 10K itself quickly, so it's ready for the next day. (Large tablets and laptops draw more and may only charge partially.)
  • FULL-COLOR LCD DISPLAY: A crisp color screen shows exact battery percentage plus live input and output wattage, so you always know how much power is left and how fast each device is charging - no blinking LEDs to decode. It stays easy to read at a glance, whether you're commuting, at an event, on a shoot or working late.

What did PowerCo’s test in Salzgitter show?

Volkswagen Group reported on January 3, 2024, that its battery company PowerCo had tested a 24-layer QuantumScape cell in its Salzgitter battery laboratories. Volkswagen Group said the cell completed more than 1,000 charging cycles with 95 percent of its capacity remaining. These figures describe the company-reported test; they are not independent verification, a Germany-wide result or proof of series production.

The cell was from QuantumScape, and the reported milestone was a test conducted by PowerCo in Germany. Volkswagen Group described perfecting and scaling manufacturing processes as the next step. The result therefore shows automotive-linked testing, not that Germany has begun mass-producing its own solid-state cells.

How should solid-state battery performance claims be compared?

“Solid-state battery” covers a range of possible cell designs rather than one settled chemistry. Fraunhofer ISI’s 2024 landscape overview describes designs using lithium-metal or silicon-based anodes; LFP or NMC cathodes; and polymer, sulfide or oxide electrolytes. Electrolyte conductivity and chemical stability, material weight, separator and electrode thickness, catholyte filling and anode design can all affect performance and manufacturability.

Fraunhofer ISI gives a planned specific-energy figure of around 400 Wh/kg for cells from several manufacturers in its 2024 overview. This is a planned value across manufacturers, not a measured result from a German commercial cell.

The 5,000mAh cell gives a modern iPhone roughly one full top-up, and you can charge wired and wireless at the same time.
  • TITANIUM SHELL, BUILT TO LAST: A titanium-reinforced shell resists dents and drops, and titanium's high thermal conductivity helps draw heat away from the cells and dissipate it at the surface during charging. It's premium protection that keeps the Air tough and travel-ready in a remarkably slim form.
  • CCC CERTIFIED FOR TRAVEL: CCC certified for battery compliance and travel in China, with FCC, CE and UKCA listings for other regions. Built-in circuit safeguards cover overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent and short circuits. Magnetic charging suits MagSafe iPhones or a thin compatible case; for Pixel and other Android phones, use a magnetic case or the 20W USB-C port.

When assessing a claim, check what kind of evidence it represents: a laboratory result, a multi-layer cell test, a pilot line or an operating production line. For test results, also look for the stated conditions and the relationship between cycle count and capacity retention. A target date or planned facility is not an achieved manufacturing milestone. Fraunhofer ISI cautioned that technology variants remain diverse and commercialization roadmaps speculative.

When could German solid-state batteries be in cars?

The sources support no dependable mass-market release date. Fraunhofer ISI’s industrial overview, last modified April 30, 2024, said maturity had not clearly consolidated across most solid-electrolyte variants and that large-scale automotive implementation remained in development. Fraunhofer ILT’s February 2026 assessment likewise described the technology as short of industrial maturity. Together, they point to substantial development activity but uncertain broad commercialization.

Announced schedules should be treated as plans unless a source reports an achieved milestone. Pilot infrastructure, prototypes and endurance tests are important development steps, but do not by themselves establish production validation, commercial output or a date when consumers can buy a car equipped with a German-made solid-state battery.

What is the overall picture?

Germany has a substantial solid-state battery development effort, with activity ranging from cell chemistry to process research and automotive-linked testing. The evidence does not establish mass production of German-developed solid-state automotive batteries, nor does it provide a national output or market-share statistic. For now, the clearest description is active industrial preparation alongside unresolved technical and manufacturing challenges—not commercial readiness.
