The 2017 Cadillac XT5’s available all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is electronically controlled and uses twin clutches to manage power between the front and rear axles. Its rear differential can also direct power between the rear wheels. The driver selects modes with the MODE control: Tour uses front-wheel drive (FWD), while AWD and Sport activate AWD. The system is optional, so not every 2017 XT5 has it.
How the XT5 AWD system manages power
GM describes two layers of torque management in the 2017 XT5’s AWD system. The twin-clutch design can send up to 100 percent of available torque to either the front or rear axle. The electronically controlled rear differential can direct up to 100 percent of available torque to either rear wheel. These are manufacturer-stated capabilities, not a fixed torque split or a guarantee that all torque is available in every situation. ( GM technical bulletin )
This arrangement lets the vehicle respond when grip differs between wheels—for example, on a surface where one side is wet, icy, or snow-covered. It does not guarantee traction, and the system’s description is not a substitute for suitable tires or cautious driving.
Rear-drive disconnect
The system can disconnect the rear drive unit, leaving the XT5 in FWD. GM identifies improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions as the feature’s purpose, but the technical bulletin does not quantify a fuel saving. What AWD OFF and SERVICE ALL WHEEL DRIVE mean
AWD OFF
The owner’s manual says AWD OFF means the system is temporarily unavailable and the XT5 is operating in FWD. Possible causes include extended driving on slippery surfaces or severe driving conditions, as well as use of a compact spare. GM’s technical bulletin explains that the system detects a compact spare and reduces AWD performance to protect the system; it advises replacing the spare with a full-size tire as soon as possible. Tire fitment depends on the vehicle’s exact configuration, so use the correct tire for that vehicle rather than assuming a size. (2017 XT5 owner’s manual; GM technical bulletin)

The Canada English owner’s manual says AWD OFF should clear when the compact spare is replaced or the triggering conditions end. It also describes switching the ignition off, waiting 30 seconds, and restarting. (2017 XT5 owner’s manual, Canada English edition)
SERVICE ALL WHEEL DRIVE
This message indicates that the system has detected a problem and the vehicle will operate in FWD. The manual instructs the driver to stop safely, switch off the ignition for 30 seconds, restart, and check whether the message returns. If it does, contact a dealer for service; the warning alone does not identify which component, if any, has failed. (2017 XT5 owner’s manual)

Confirm whether a 2017 XT5 has AWD
AWD was available equipment, not standard on every 2017 XT5. Cadillac’s 2017 brochure lists AWD with driver mode select as available. Check the individual vehicle’s equipment and consult its owner’s manual rather than assuming a particular XT5 has the system. (2017 Cadillac XT5 brochure)
