Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid are changing the global auto market in different ways—but they are not the whole electric-vehicle revolution. In 2025, electric-car sales worldwide topped 20 million, yet Chinese automakers supplied most of those cars and China led production by an even wider margin. Tesla brings scale and widely sold models; Rivian is extending from consumer vehicles into commercial vans; Lucid is building a smaller luxury-EV business. Their influence is best judged against the size, geography, and economics of the market around them.
How large is the global electric-car market?
The International Energy Agency (IEA) says more than 20 million electric cars were sold worldwide in 2025, 20% more than in 2024 and one-quarter of all new-car sales. In the IEA’s usage, “electric cars” includes battery-electric and plug-in hybrid cars; it does not mean every figure is battery-electric-only.
That growth is significant, but it is not evenly distributed. The IEA reports that China sold more than 13 million electric cars in 2025, Europe sold 4.2 million, and U.S. sales remained relatively stable. Their shares of new-car sales show just how different those markets are:

Why do China, trade, and manufacturing matter?
The three U.S. companies in this article operate within a market whose center of gravity is not the United States. Chinese automakers supplied 60% of global electric-car sales in 2025, while European and North American automakers each supplied about 15%, according to the IEA. China also accounted for nearly 75% of global electric-car production and more than 80% of battery-cell production that year. About one-quarter of electric cars produced worldwide crossed national borders.
Those figures help explain why the global contest is about more than which automaker makes the most visible model. Production capacity, battery supply, trade, and access to regional customers all influence which vehicles can be built and sold competitively. The IEA’s data points to the scale of that challenge for U.S. manufacturers; it does not, by itself, establish how much any one company depends on a particular supplier or trade route.
Model reach is another part of the picture. The IEA says five models accounted for about 20% of global battery-electric car sales in 2025. Tesla’s Model Y represented nearly 8% and the Model 3 3.6%; the other three were the Geely Geome Xingyuan, Wuling HongGuang Mini, and BYD Seagull. That concentration shows the global reach of Tesla’s two models, but also places them in a field where Chinese models are major competitors.

How do Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid compare in scale?
Company-reported 2025 deliveries show a large difference in operating scale. Deliveries are completed vehicle handovers reported by each automaker; they are not production totals, market shares, revenue, or a measure of profitability.

What is Tesla changing?
Tesla’s impact combines high delivery volume with the reach of the Model Y and Model 3. The IEA’s estimate that those two models together accounted for about 11.6% of global battery-electric car sales in 2025 is evidence of their prominence in that category. It is not Tesla’s share of all cars, nor a measure of the company’s share across every electric-car category.

Scale has not meant uninterrupted growth. Tesla reported lower 2025 automotive sales revenue and deliveries than in 2024, alongside a lower average selling price. That makes the company’s influence a two-sided story: it has models with substantial global sales reach, while its latest annual results show pressure on deliveries and automotive revenue.
Tesla’s FY2025 filing also describes investment in vehicles, batteries, AI computing, service, and charging infrastructure. Those are company-stated priorities, not proof that every investment has been completed or that it has delivered a particular result. Together, they indicate an effort to compete across more than the vehicle itself, including the systems used to make, maintain, and support it.

What is Rivian changing?
Rivian is much smaller than Tesla by 2025 deliveries, but its business spans consumer vehicles and electric commercial vans. Its 2025 filing also identifies the R2 program, giving the company a stated path to broaden its vehicle offering. These programs point to an attempt to serve more than one kind of customer; they do not establish how quickly Rivian can scale or how profitable that expansion will be.

In a July 2026 company release, Rivian reported producing 12,613 vehicles and delivering 12,194 in the second quarter. It raised its full-year 2026 delivery guidance to 65,000–70,000 vehicles. These are a quarterly result and company guidance, respectively—not completed-year 2026 deliveries. Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said in the FY2025 results release, “In 2025 we focused on execution as we laid the foundation for dramatically scaling our business.” That is management’s description of its priorities, not independent evidence that scaling has already been achieved.

Lucid occupies a different part of the market: the company describes itself as a luxury-EV manufacturer, and its 2025 delivery total was far below Tesla’s and Rivian’s. Its deliveries grew quickly year over year from a lower base, but the available FY2025 figures do not put it on a comparable volume footing with Tesla.
The distinction between production and delivery is particularly important for Lucid. The company revised its 2025 production total to 17,840, explaining that its internal timing criteria for classifying vehicles as production had changed; it expected those vehicles to complete final validation in 2026. That reported production figure should not be read as 17,840 completed customer deliveries.

What do the 2026 outlooks tell us—and what do they not?
The IEA estimates that global electric-car sales will reach 23 million in 2026, or 28% of all car sales. It projects growth along different regional paths, including Europe sales growth of around 20%, China approaching a 60% electric-car share, Asia Pacific excluding China growing by more than 50%, and Latin America rising 45%. These are IEA estimates and projections, not completed 2026 results.
Company guidance is a separate kind of outlook. Rivian’s 65,000–70,000 delivery range and Lucid’s 25,000–27,000 production range for 2026 are each company forecasts for different measures. They should not be compared as if they were actual outcomes, and Lucid’s production guidance is not a delivery target.
How should readers judge the companies’ impact?
Delivery totals are useful for comparing scale, but they cannot settle the broader question of market impact. A fuller assessment should consider several distinct measures:
- Volume and momentum: Compare deliveries over the same reporting period, then check whether production, deliveries, and revenue are moving in the same direction.
- Affordability and reach: Consider which customers can realistically buy a company’s vehicles and whether its models compete in high-volume segments. The evidence here establishes strong Model Y and Model 3 reach, but does not provide comparable vehicle prices.
- Product and customer coverage: Distinguish a company focused on passenger vehicles from one also pursuing commercial fleets or a luxury niche. New programs matter as plans until their production and sales are demonstrated.
- Manufacturing and supply: Look beyond announced capacity to actual output, and consider how global production and battery-cell concentration shape a manufacturer’s options.
- Geography and access: A vehicle’s influence depends on the markets where it is sold and supported. Charging and service infrastructure can matter alongside the car, but the figures cited here do not establish a comparable network footprint for all three companies.
- Durable financial performance: Revenue trends and the ability to sustain operations and investment are relevant alongside deliveries. The cited figures do not provide a like-for-like profitability comparison among the three.
The global evidence makes the central point clear: Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid are distinct U.S. participants in a much larger transition, not stand-ins for it. Their importance lies in different combinations of scale, model reach, customer segments, and expansion plans, while global adoption and manufacturing are shaped heavily by regional markets and Chinese production leadership.
