Tesla has made documented changes to vehicle construction, but the available evidence does not prove a consistent, decade-long improvement in fit and finish across every model, factory, and production year. Panel alignment, paint and appearance, workmanship, reliability, and recall performance are different measures—and they should not be treated as one build-quality score.
What the evidence can—and cannot—show
A fair assessment needs comparable vehicles and a clearly defined measure. A change to a body component can establish that construction changed; it does not, by itself, show that the change improved quality. Likewise, owner impressions can describe individual experiences but cannot establish how common a problem is.
The evidence available here does not provide a longitudinal dataset that compares Tesla vehicles by model, factory, and model year on physical fit and finish. Tesla also acknowledged in its 2025 Form 10-K, published in 2026, that it has a limited frame of reference for evaluating certain long-term aspects of product quality, reliability, durability, and performance. The company said it continues to conduct extensive internal testing, while noting that this limitation is shared across the industry. Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K
That makes a sweeping verdict—such as “new Teslas are uniformly better built”—stronger than the evidence supports. It is more useful to look at the specific dimensions for which dated, attributable information exists.

Documented changes to vehicle construction
Tesla’s Model S Palladium body repair procedure identifies two versions of the rear trunk floor panel: one for vehicles built through May 21, 2024, and a different panel for vehicles built after that date. This records a production material change for a specific component and vehicle line. The document does not say the newer panel represents a quality improvement, or establish that the change applied to other models. Model S Palladium body repair procedure
Such service documentation is useful evidence that parts and specifications can change during a model’s production life. It is not a substitute for comparative inspection data on panel gaps, paint consistency, cabin trim, or long-term durability.

Fit, paint, workmanship, and warranty are separate questions
Visible fit and finish
Panel alignment, paint appearance, trim fit, and rattles are the kinds of issues commonly meant by “build quality” in owner conversations. Anecdotes about them vary, but self-selected owner reports are not a representative sample and cannot establish a decade-wide trend.
What the historical warranty language says
Tesla’s 2015 Form 10-K described warranty coverage for defects in materials or workmanship, while identifying paint and general appearance among certain limitations or exclusions. That is historical language from a 2015 filing, not a statement of today’s warranty terms. Anyone evaluating a current vehicle should consult the warranty applicable to its market, model, and purchase date. Tesla’s 2015 Form 10-K

For the best bond, please keep the vehicle parked in the shade or away from direct, intense sunlight for the first 24 hours to allow the adhesive to fully set.
- Essential Installation & Sun Protection Guidelines: Ensure the dashboard is completely clean, dry, and free of dust or oils before mounting. We strongly recommend lightly warming the backing tape with a hair dryer to maximize adhesion. Once aligned, press both ends firmly for 60 seconds. For optimal bonding, keep the vehicle parked in the shade for the first 24 hours to let the adhesive fully set, and avoid exposing the trim to prolonged, intense direct sunlight.
Reliability and recalls do not measure finish quality
Mechanical reliability, durability, and safety defects matter to an overall ownership assessment, but they are not direct measures of paint, panel gaps, or cabin assembly. Recall completion rates measure whether owners complete safety remedies, not how well a vehicle was physically assembled.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2025 Annual Recalls Report lists Tesla recall completion rates of 79% for 2021, 99% for 2022, 55% for 2023, and 88% for 2024. These year-specific figures are recall-completion rates as reported in the 2025 report; they should not be read as a build-quality rating or as the share of vehicles with physical defects. Tesla’s 2023 Impact Report says the company reviewed 100% of NHTSA Vehicle Owner Questionnaire complaints filed for Tesla vehicles it produced. The same report lists 13 U.S. recalls in 2023, 46% of them software-only. These are company-reported figures: they describe complaint review and recall composition, not the prevalence of physical workmanship problems. Tesla 2023 Impact Report
How to assess a particular Tesla
For a purchase or ownership decision, judge the specific vehicle rather than assuming that its age settles the question. Keep comparisons narrow and check safety information separately from cosmetic and assembly condition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Match the comparison. Compare the same model and generation, similar model years, and—where verifiable—the same factory or region. Production specifications can change within a model’s life.
- Inspect the relevant finish. Look at panel alignment, paint, exterior trim, interior fit, and signs of repair on the individual vehicle. Treat owner accounts as examples, not prevalence estimates.
- Separate safety remedies from cosmetic concerns. Check whether the vehicle has an open recall by VIN using Tesla’s recall search. The page states its data were current to September 10, 2026. Tesla VIN recall search
- Use the applicable warranty terms. Confirm the coverage for the vehicle’s market, model, and purchase date rather than relying on language in a 2015 filing.
So, has Tesla build quality improved?
The supportable answer is that Tesla’s production and component specifications have changed, but the evidence cited here does not establish a uniform improvement in physical build quality over the last decade. A specific panel revision, recall statistics, historical warranty language, and company-reported complaint review each answer different questions. For a meaningful judgment, compare like-for-like vehicles and inspect the specific areas that matter to you.
