It is not a four-wheel-drive mode the driver must switch on when the road gets slippery. It can help manage the power reaching the wheels, but it cannot make tires grip a surface that offers little traction.
What “Symmetrical AWD” means
In Subaru’s explanation, “symmetrical” refers to the balanced drivetrain layout along the vehicle’s centerline. The practical point is that the system is designed to send engine power to all four wheels while varying its delivery in response to traction signals. Subaru describes the system as using front, rear, and center differentials, with sensors monitoring grip and the controls adjusting power as needed. Subaru’s AWD explainer describes its system as full-time and always operating, rather than waiting for a wheel to spin before AWD engages.
That operating principle does not mean every Subaru has identical AWD hardware or an equal share of power at each wheel. For example, Subaru’s 2024 WRX trim comparison lists Continuous AWD on some trims and Variable Torque Distribution AWD on others. The specific mechanism depends on the model year, trim, and transmission.
How it behaves in different conditions
Rain and wet roads
On wet pavement, available grip can vary as the car accelerates, brakes, or corners. AWD continues operating and helps manage propulsion when traction differs between wheels or axles. Subaru’s 2026 Forester feature page says that model’s system evaluates acceleration, braking, and cornering in real time while continuously delivering power to all four wheels. That is Subaru’s description of the Forester; sensors and calibration should not be assumed identical across the lineup.

Snow and ice
Snow and ice can make traction uneven, and different wheels may lose grip at different times. Subaru says its AWD system adjusts power in response to changing traction, which can help the vehicle get moving and maintain drive traction. It does not make a car immune to skids or establish that the car will stop in a shorter distance. Drive at a speed suited to conditions, leave extra following distance, and use tires appropriate for the weather. Subaru discusses changing wheel traction in its snow-driving guidance.
Dry roads
AWD remains active on dry pavement; it does not switch off simply because the road is clear. The system still manages power delivery, although there may be little need to respond to differences in grip. Subaru’s general consumer guidance says everyday use on dry, even surfaces should have little effect on fuel consumption, while demanding conditions may use more. That is broad manufacturer guidance, not a model-specific fuel-economy guarantee.

What X-MODE adds
X-MODE is a separate driver-activated aid on equipped vehicles, not the AWD system itself. Subaru says it works with Symmetrical AWD for slippery, steep, or uneven conditions by adjusting throttle response and transmission behavior, increasing front-to-rear coupling force, and using vehicle-dynamics-control braking to address a slipping wheel. Some equipped vehicles offer dual-function settings for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud. Availability and controls depend on the model and trim; Subaru’s 2026 Forester page, for instance, identifies available dual-function X-MODE settings and the trims that offer them.
Subaru’s undated X-MODE explainer, accessed in 2026, gives these operating details: X-MODE does not function above 18 mph; Hill Descent Control operates below 12 mph; and X-MODE can be switched on at 25 mph or slower. These are feature operating limits, not performance guarantees, and vehicle-specific instructions may differ. Check the owner’s manual for your model year’s activation steps and limits.

What AWD cannot do—and why tires matter
AWD manages propulsion; it does not create grip, remove the need for careful driving, or establish a braking-distance advantage. Tire condition, type, and fitment still matter. A Subaru owner’s manual warns that tires with different diameters or excessively low pressure can trigger an AWD warning. Keep tires matched to the vehicle’s specifications and maintain the prescribed pressures; consult the manual if an AWD warning appears. Subaru’s owner resources provide access to vehicle-specific manuals.
