Solid-state batteries could let electric vehicles travel farther, charge faster and reduce some battery fire risks—but those are potential advantages, not yet proven characteristics of mass-market EVs. Automakers and battery developers have announced targets and reported promising sample-cell results; real-world vehicle performance, cost and broad availability remain unresolved.
What “solid-state” means—and why designs matter
Solid-state is not a single battery design. The International Energy Agency (IEA) distinguishes semi-solid systems, which use a solid polymer electrolyte at elevated temperatures, from almost-solid and all-solid-state designs whose solid electrolyte remains mechanically rigid during operation. Almost-solid designs can still contain small amounts of liquid electrolyte at the cathode. The safety advantages most often associated with solid-state batteries concern almost-solid or all-solid designs, which the IEA describes as being at the prototype stage. Cell architecture matters when interpreting a company’s claims. QuantumScape describes a ceramic solid separator and a lithium-metal anode that forms during the cell’s first charge, but also says its design uses an organic liquid catholyte. Calling it solid-state does not mean the cell contains no liquid components. QuantumScape’s technology overview

A cell with greater energy density can store more energy in a given volume or weight. An automaker could use that capacity to extend range, shrink or lighten the battery pack, or balance range against cost, cabin space and vehicle efficiency. Greater cell energy density does not automatically translate into a fixed percentage increase in driving range: pack design, vehicle weight, aerodynamics and efficiency all affect the result.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Toyota’s 2023 announcement set a target of a 20% range improvement for its all-solid-state battery compared with its named performance-version next-generation battery. Toyota noted that the comparison included vehicle-efficiency improvements such as better aerodynamics and lower weight, so the figure is not a cell-only gain or an independently verified production-car result. Toyota also gave 2027–2028 as its commercialization aim, not a confirmed launch date. Toyota’s 2023 announcement
QuantumScape offered a separate illustration in December 2023: a vehicle with about 350 miles of range on a conventional cell could reach 400–500 miles using its target cell. The company explicitly said actual range would depend on vehicle design. This is a company projection, not a demonstrated comparison between retail EVs. QuantumScape’s range illustration

How charging could change
Faster charging is another stated goal, but the headline figures are development claims measured at the cell or target level, not proof of how quickly a production EV will charge on a public network. A vehicle’s charging time also depends on the battery pack, charging equipment and operating conditions; a cell result cannot be treated as a promised charging-stop time.
| Developer and evidence | Stated 10–80% charging figure | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota, 2023 | 10 minutes or less | Company target for its all-solid-state BEV battery; commercialization was aimed at 2027–2028. Toyota |
| QuantumScape, 2026 | Under 15 minutes | Capability reported for QSE-5 B-sample cells in the company’s SEC filing, not a vehicle-level consumer result. QuantumScape’s 2026 SEC filing |
These are not like-for-like demonstrations: Toyota’s figure is a target for a future battery, while QuantumScape’s is a reported sample-cell capability. Neither establishes charging performance in an available EV across different chargers, climates or driving conditions.

What the safety case does—and does not—show
Some solid electrolytes can avoid combustible separator materials used in conventional lithium-ion cells, which is one reason developers expect safety benefits. But a solid separator alone does not make a complete battery pack fireproof, and designs differ in their other materials and failure modes. The IEA says the expected safety advantage has not yet been demonstrated in real-world applications. IEA’s 2026 EV battery chapter
QuantumScape’s own description illustrates why “solid-state” should not be taken to mean “no liquid”: its ceramic separator is paired with an organic liquid catholyte. That detail does not by itself establish whether the design is safer or less safe than a particular conventional battery; such a conclusion would require comparable safety testing and clear conditions.

Why development does not yet mean broad availability
Making a promising cell in a sample or pilot line is different from producing reliable, affordable cells at automotive scale and integrating them into a vehicle pack. The IEA says all-solid-state production remains more complex and costly than lithium-ion production. Pack integration also brings stricter mechanical requirements, including higher operating pressure, and early costs are likely to be high. Those hurdles help explain why an advanced cell does not automatically produce an affordable or widely available EV.

Toyota’s METI announcement
- QuantumScape: Its 2026 SEC filing describes the company as development-stage and pre-revenue, reports QSE-5 B-sample figures of more than 800 Wh/L and under-15-minute 10–80% charging capability, and says its San Jose pilot line began initial ramp-up in February 2026. These are company-reported cell and development milestones, not independent validation or retail-EV results. QuantumScape’s 2026 SEC filing
- QuantumScape and Honda R&D: On June 18, 2026, the companies announced a multi-year joint research agreement after Honda completed a technology evaluation. Honda R&D Chief Operating Officer, Research Center of Excellence, Atsushi Ogawa, said, “QS technology demonstrated compelling and unique advantages during our evaluation.” This is a partner’s evaluation statement, not a public independent test report or a production-vehicle commitment. The IEA expects solid-state batteries to remain limited to premium EV segments until the first half of the 2030s. That is a market outlook, not a guaranteed schedule for when the technology will reach a particular model, market or price point. IEA’s 2026 EV battery chapter
