Silvercar’s counterless idea was to move key rental steps into a phone: reserve a car, use the app to locate it, then unlock it through the app. That could replace some traditional counter interactions, but the documented process did not eliminate every staff interaction or let customers simply walk up and take a car. Silvercar was rebranded as Audi on demand in 2022; the current US availability of that service is not established by the official sources cited here.
How Silvercar’s app-based pickup was meant to work
Silvercar described its mobile app as a way for customers to book, locate and unlock a rental vehicle, making contactless access part of the rental experience. In practical terms, the sequence was:
- Reserve: Book the vehicle through the app.
- Locate: Use the app to find the assigned car.
- Unlock: Use the app to access the vehicle.
Silvercar also promoted contactless pickup and delivery at participating locations in its 2020 announcement. Availability depended on location and the terms then in effect; those pandemic-era details should not be treated as current service terms. The announcement does not establish that every conventional rental-counter step disappeared, nor does it provide measured wait-time savings. Silvercar’s 2020 contactless-rental announcement
Counterless did not mean walk-up or guaranteed immediate access
A dated Audi on demand support article said the service was not designed for walk-up rentals. It advised customers without a reservation to call their local office to check availability and warned that a reservation made less than two hours before pickup was not guaranteed. That is historical support guidance, not confirmation of current policy. Audi on demand support: walk-up and short-notice reservations

- 2017: The same release said Audi acquired Silvercar.
- 2020: Silvercar promoted app-based booking, vehicle location and unlocking, alongside contactless pickup and delivery options subject to location-specific terms.
- November 15, 2022: Audi of America announced Silvercar by Audi was becoming Audi on demand, describing an app-based premium rental service at participating Audi dealerships. It reported 38 participating Audi dealerships in the United States at that time; that is a historical count, not a current location total. The announcement also described flexible rental terms and pickup or delivery options. Audi of America’s rebrand announcement
Is Audi on demand currently available in the United States?
Current US availability is not established by the official information cited here. Audi of America’s 2022 announcement confirms the rebrand and its dealership footprint at that date, but does not establish today’s status. The official Audi on demand site located for this article is explicitly a German offer: it describes online booking and pickup through partner locations, and identifies Euromobil GmbH as the provider. It is not evidence of a current US rental service. Audi on demand Germany
Audi USA also describes remote locking, unlocking and vehicle-location functions in the myAudi app for eligible Audi vehicles. Those are ownership-app features; they do not show that an Audi on demand rental can currently be booked in the United States. Audi USA: myAudi app
