RWE’s planned Moerdijk battery in Noord-Brabant, the Netherlands, is designed to store electricity when supply is plentiful and return it to the grid later. Its 400 MW rating describes power—the rate at which it can charge or discharge—while its 1,100 MWh rating describes the amount of energy it can store. RWE says the project is also intended to help TenneT ease a regional grid bottleneck. The facility is not operating yet: RWE announced a final investment decision on 21 September 2026 and plans commissioning in the second quarter of 2028.
What a grid battery does—and what Moerdijk is intended to do
A grid battery shifts some electricity from one time to another. When electricity is available in excess of immediate demand or network capacity, the battery can charge. Later, when electricity is needed, it can discharge stored energy back to the grid. The battery does not generate electricity: it stores electricity supplied from elsewhere and returns it later.

For Moerdijk, RWE specifically says the battery will store electricity when wind output is high and feed it back when needed. That can help align the timing of electricity supply with the timing of demand. It does not mean the battery creates additional renewable generation, nor does the announcement establish that it can provide continuous renewable electricity on its own.

What 400 MW and 1,100 MWh mean
MW and MWh describe different things. A megawatt (MW) is a measure of power: the rate at which the battery can take in or deliver electricity. A megawatt-hour (MWh) is a measure of energy: an amount of electricity. Treating the two numbers as interchangeable can make a battery sound as if it can deliver its rated power indefinitely, which the energy-capacity figure does not support.
Dividing Moerdijk’s announced 1,100 MWh by its 400 MW rated output gives 2.75 hours at full rated output. That calculation is consistent with RWE’s description of almost three hours. It is an implied duration based on announced ratings, not a measured discharge test or a promise that the battery will always discharge at full power for that length of time. The project announcement does not provide measured operating performance.
| Project measure | Moerdijk announcement | What it tells a reader |
|---|---|---|
| Rated power | 400 MW | The stated rate at which the battery can take in or deliver electricity. |
| Energy capacity | 1,100 MWh | The stated amount of energy the system is designed to store. |
| Implied full-output duration | 2.75 hours, calculated from the announced ratings | A simple ratio, not a measured result. |
| Battery containers | 208 lithium-ion containers | The large-scale physical installation RWE says it will build. |
RWE also equates the project’s output over almost three hours with the evening peak demand of 500,000 households. That is the company’s equivalence, not a measured demonstration that the battery has supplied that number of homes. Household demand varies, and the stated comparison should be read in the context RWE gives: almost three hours at full output.

How storing electricity differs from relieving congestion
Energy shifting and congestion management are connected, but they describe different services. Charging during a period of high wind output and discharging later shifts electricity across time. Congestion management addresses a network constraint in a particular place: it concerns when and where electricity flows through the grid.
RWE says TenneT will dispatch the Moerdijk battery under capacity-steering agreements to help relieve congestion in Noord-Brabant. The proposed location matters to that role. The battery is planned at the Moerdijk power-station site, connecting through the plant’s existing substation; TenneT’s regional director says it is near a 150 kV substation and intended to relieve a regional bottleneck. In other words, the plan is not simply to put storage somewhere on the grid and assume it can address every constraint. The announced service is tied to a specific regional need.
The statement from Mark Lentjes, TenneT Southern Netherlands’ regional director, appears in RWE’s announcement rather than in a separate TenneT publication. Lentjes said the battery’s location near the Moerdijk-Noord substation would help alleviate the regional bottleneck, which affects congestion across Noord-Brabant. RWE and TenneT have described the intended role, but the announcement does not quantify how much congestion the battery will remove or report actual dispatch results.

- Please Note: BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED. YOHAWJER included a battery tester is suitable for all types of batteries with the organizer but Does NOT include any batteries. Super convenient for you to distinguish which batteries need to be recycled
A battery can therefore be useful for a particular network need without resolving congestion everywhere. The Moerdijk announcement supports a planned regional service, not a claim that one project will eliminate grid bottlenecks across the Netherlands. Its eventual effect will depend on how it is dispatched and on the network conditions it is meant to address; the announcement supplies no measured outcome.

Where the project fits in RWE’s renewable-power plans
RWE presents Moerdijk as one element of a broader flexibility plan linked to OranjeWind, a 795 MW offshore wind project off the Dutch coast developed by RWE and TotalEnergies. Alongside the battery, the options named by RWE include electrolysis, e-boilers and smart charging. These technologies are distinct approaches to providing flexibility; the company’s announcement does not say the battery alone will make OranjeWind’s output available continuously.
The distinction matters when reading claims about renewable energy. A battery can move some stored electricity to a later time, but it is not a source of new wind power. RWE’s description positions it as part of a set of onshore options intended to help integrate offshore wind, rather than as a standalone guarantee of constant renewable supply.

Project status, site and announced schedule
RWE’s announcement, dated 21 September 2026, says it has taken a final investment decision for the project. It places the battery at the Moerdijk power-station site in Noord-Brabant and says it will connect through the existing substation at the RWE power plant. RWE planned commissioning for the second quarter of 2028. That is the company’s announced schedule, not confirmation that the battery is already built or operating; schedules can change.
- Location: the Moerdijk power-station site in Noord-Brabant, the Netherlands.
- Connection described by RWE: through the existing substation at the power plant.
- Planned system: a 400 MW/1,100 MWh lithium-ion battery made up of 208 containers.
- Announced status: final investment decision reported by RWE on 21 September 2026.
- Announced commissioning target: the second quarter of 2028.
Why another 400 MW battery is not the same project
A 400 MW rating alone does not identify a battery or tell you how long it can deliver power. The California Energy Commission separately reported on 26 May 2026 that it had approved the Potentia-Viridi battery project in eastern Alameda County, California. That project also has a 400 MW rating, but its stated discharge capacity is up to 3,200 MWh, compared with Moerdijk’s 1,100 MWh.

For Moerdijk, dividing the announced energy capacity by rated power implies 2.75 hours at full output. Applying the same arithmetic to Potentia-Viridi’s stated figures gives up to eight hours, but that is only a ratio of the reported capacity to the 400 MW rating, not a measured operating duration. The projects have different locations, stated energy capacities and project statuses; figures for one should not be attributed to the other.

How to interpret the promised benefits
The announcements establish the planned scale, location, intended services and schedule. They do not establish the battery’s eventual availability, actual discharge profile, efficiency, operating costs or quantified effect on congestion. Nor do they show how often or under what conditions TenneT will dispatch the system. Those are not details to fill in by assuming that a rated capacity will be used in a particular way.
When assessing a grid-battery announcement, keep three questions separate:
- How much power? The MW figure describes the stated rate of charging or discharging.
- How much energy? The MWh figure describes stated storage capacity; comparing it with MW gives an implied duration, not a test result.
- For what grid need and where? A general ability to shift electricity is different from a location-specific congestion service. Look for the named network area, connection and intended dispatch role.
For Moerdijk, the answers announced so far are 400 MW and 1,100 MWh; an implied 2.75 hours at full rated output; and a planned role in storing electricity when wind output is high, returning it when needed, and helping TenneT ease congestion in Noord-Brabant. RWE’s Q2 2028 commissioning target and the claimed benefits remain prospective until the project is operating and its performance can be documented.
