How Much Can a 3.5L EcoBoost Tow? 2026 F-150 Ratings and Real-World Limits

The 2026 F-150 3.5L EcoBoost is rated to tow up to 13,500 lb in certain properly equipped configurations. Your truck’s exact rating and usable capacity depend on its configuration, payload and loaded weights.

How much can a 3.5L EcoBoost tow? In a properly equipped 2026 Ford F-150 with the standard 3.5L EcoBoost V6, the maximum available rating is 13,500 lb. That is a best-case figure for specific configurations—not the rating of every F-150 with this engine. Your truck’s cab, drivetrain, wheelbase, axle ratio, trim and equipment determine its listed rating, while payload and the loaded truck-and-trailer weights determine whether you can use that capacity safely.

The figures below are for the 2026 F-150 unless a different model year is named. If you own another year, use that year’s Ford towing guide and the labels and manual for your particular truck.

What the 13,500-lb maximum does—and does not—mean

Ford lists a maximum available conventional tow rating of 13,500 lb for the standard 3.5L EcoBoost in the 2026 F-150. Ford’s 2026 towing guide calls its table values “Maximum Loaded Trailer Weight” and specifies that the maximum-capability footnote assumes a properly equipped vehicle with a 150-lb driver and passenger. The rating varies with configuration, accessories, option content, cargo and passenger count. Ford says the ratings are calculated using SAE J2807.

That headline number answers how much a qualifying configuration can be rated to tow under the guide’s conditions. It does not mean every 3.5L EcoBoost F-150 can pull a 13,500-lb trailer, or that a trailer of that weight will leave room for all the people and gear you want to carry. The specific truck’s row in the correct model-year guide is the starting point; the vehicle’s payload, axle, hitch and combined-weight limits still apply.

Ford’s 2026 F-150 performance information also lists a separate maximum for the PowerBoost hybrid. Do not treat that as an EcoBoost rating: the PowerBoost is a distinct powertrain, and the High-Output EcoBoost is a distinct engine variant as well.

2026 F-150: ratings vary by engine and configuration

The examples below show why an engine-only maximum is not enough to identify a truck’s capacity. They are published maxima or examples, not promises that every truck in that broad category has the same rating.

Powertrain or configuration Published figure How to interpret it
2026 standard 3.5L EcoBoost V6 Up to 13,500 lb Maximum available conventional tow rating. The exact truck configuration and required equipment determine whether it applies.
2026 3.5L GTDI V6 configurations in Ford’s towing guide Examples include 13,300 lb for one SuperCrew configuration, 13,100 lb and 13,500 lb for other listed SuperCrew configurations, and 10,600 lb for a Tremor configuration Some of the top-rated rows require the Tow/Haul Package (53T) and optional Max Tow Axle. These examples do not identify a rating for every cab, drivetrain or trim combination.
2026 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid Up to 11,600 lb A different powertrain from the standard 3.5L EcoBoost.
2025 standard 3.5L EcoBoost Up to 13,500 lb Ford’s 2025 product information lists this maximum for that model year; use the 2025 guide and the individual truck’s labels for a specific vehicle.
2025 3.5L EcoBoost maximum payload Up to 2,440 lb This is a 2025 maximum, not a figure for every truck and not a 2026 payload rating. The particular vehicle’s label controls.
2025 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid Up to 11,200 lb Ford’s 2025 figure differs from the 2026 PowerBoost maximum.
2025 3.5L High-Output EcoBoost Up to 8,200 lb A distinct High-Output engine configuration, not the standard EcoBoost rating.

Ford’s 2026 table includes separate entries for cab, drive and other configurations. It is not safe to infer a rating by matching only the engine name or trim badge: find the row for the actual truck and confirm its installed equipment. A truck with a different wheelbase, axle ratio, drivetrain or option content may have a different maximum even if its engine is also labeled 3.5L EcoBoost.

Know which weight limit applies

“Towing capacity” is only one part of the calculation. The truck can be below its trailer-weight maximum and still exceed another rating because passengers, cargo and tongue load consume capacity too.

Term What it limits Why it matters when towing
Maximum loaded trailer weight The loaded trailer weight permitted for a specific truck configuration in the towing guide. Compare it with the trailer’s actual loaded weight, not just its advertised or empty weight.
Payload The truck’s allowance for occupants and cargo. People, cargo, accessories and trailer tongue weight all use payload. Equipment and options can reduce the payload available for the trip.
GVWR The maximum loaded weight of the truck itself. The loaded truck, including occupants, cargo and accessories, must remain within this rating.
GCWR The maximum combined loaded weight of truck and trailer. Ford’s 2026 guide states: “Combined weight of vehicle and trailer cannot exceed listed GCWR.”
GAWR The maximum weight supported by an individual axle. Front and rear axle loads must each stay within the corresponding limit, even if the truck’s total weight is within GVWR.
Tongue weight The downward force the loaded trailer applies at the hitch ball. It contributes to the truck’s load and affects handling; it must fit within payload, axle and hitch limits.

Ford’s guide specifically warns owners to ensure payload, reduced by option weight, can accommodate the trailer tongue load as well as passengers and cargo added to the tow vehicle. An engine’s maximum trailer rating cannot override the truck’s GVWR, GCWR, GAWR or hitch limits.

Why payload can be the practical limit

Payload is easy to overlook because it is less prominent than the tow rating. Suppose a truck has a high trailer rating but the planned trip includes several occupants, a bed full of gear and a trailer whose tongue presses down on the hitch. Those loads all count against the vehicle’s available capacity. Adding a bed cover, racks, a toolbox or other accessories also uses some of the truck’s allowance; Ford’s guide notes that option weight reduces payload available for other loads.

Do not use the 2025 maximum payload of 2,440 lb as though it were the number on your truck. It is a published maximum for a model-year and engine grouping, not a specification for each configuration. Use the payload information on your actual truck and the vehicle certification label for GVWR and axle ratings. Ford describes payload as calculable from GVWR minus curb weight, but an owner should rely on the actual vehicle’s values rather than a generic curb-weight estimate.

Rear axle capacity deserves particular attention because trailer tongue weight is applied near the rear of the truck. A truck may remain under its overall GVWR while one axle exceeds its GAWR. Check each axle limit and the hitch’s own ratings, not only the combined figure.

Tongue weight and weight-distribution equipment

Ford’s 2026 towing guide says tongue load should be 10% of the total loaded trailer weight. Ford’s broader towing guidance gives a general 10–15% range for conventional trailers, but the vehicle-specific towing guide, owner’s manual and hitch instructions should govern the setup for an individual truck. A percentage is a planning check, not permission to exceed the truck’s payload, rear GAWR, hitch rating or any other limit.

The 2026 guide says not to exceed 5,000 lb of trailer weight without a weight-distribution system. That is a setup condition, not an increase in the truck’s tow rating. If the trailer and hitch configuration calls for weight-distribution equipment, follow the truck and hitch manufacturers’ instructions and verify that the equipment itself is rated for the load.

Measure tongue weight with the trailer loaded as it will travel. Moving cargo within the trailer can change tongue load, so a measurement taken when the trailer is empty or packed differently may not describe the trip configuration. Use a suitable scale, and do not assume the trailer’s listed dry weight or a hitch’s maximum rating tells you the actual load.

How to verify the capacity of your F-150

  1. Identify the exact truck. Record its model year, engine variant, trim, cab, bed or wheelbase, 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrain, axle ratio and installed towing equipment. Confirm whether it has the Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle if you are checking a 2026 configuration whose guide row requires them.
  2. Open the correct model-year Ford towing guide. Locate the table for the relevant engine and match the truck’s configuration rather than selecting the engine’s largest number. Confirm the guide’s footnotes and equipment requirements alongside the row.
  3. Read the truck’s certification label and owner’s manual. Find GVWR, front and rear GAWR and the applicable hitch or tongue-load limits. The label and manual for your vehicle matter more than a payload maximum published for a model range.
  4. Load the truck for the trip. Account for every occupant, cargo item, accessory and option that is part of the towing setup. Include trailer tongue load in the truck’s payload calculation.
  5. Weigh the loaded trailer and truck combination. Ford recommends weighing the trailer and measuring tongue weight. A public truck scale or weight station can help establish loaded weights; use onboard scales if fitted, or a specialized tongue-weight scale when needed.
  6. Check every limit against the measured loads. The loaded trailer must not exceed the specific maximum loaded trailer weight; the combined truck and trailer must stay within GCWR; the truck must stay within GVWR; and neither axle may exceed its GAWR. Confirm hitch limits and follow the manual’s weight-distribution instructions.

If one measured value is over its limit, reduce the load or change the towing arrangement and weigh again. Repositioning cargo may change axle distribution and tongue weight, but it does not raise any published rating. If the labels, installed equipment or applicable guide row are unclear, ask a Ford dealer to confirm the truck’s configuration before towing near a maximum.

Common mistakes when reading a tow rating

  • Applying the engine maximum to every F-150. The 13,500-lb figure is the best-case available rating, not a universal standard-EcoBoost rating.
  • Mixing model years. The 2025 PowerBoost and 2026 PowerBoost maxima differ, and a 2025 payload maximum is not a 2026 specification.
  • Confusing engine variants. Standard EcoBoost, PowerBoost hybrid and High-Output EcoBoost are not interchangeable names for one rating.
  • Comparing trailer dry weight with tow capacity. The relevant comparison is the loaded trailer’s actual weight, alongside the combined-weight and truck limits.
  • Forgetting people, cargo and tongue load. These loads consume vehicle capacity even when the trailer itself is under its maximum rating.
  • Assuming a package or accessory adds capacity by itself. Equipment matters only as specified for the configuration in the towing guide; accessories can also consume payload.
  • Checking only GVWR. GCWR, front and rear GAWR, payload and hitch limits are separate constraints that must all be satisfied.

Choosing between two 3.5L EcoBoost F-150s

When comparing trucks, the useful question is not simply which one has the largest engine-level number. Compare the actual configuration and the capacity left for your people and gear after accounting for the trailer’s loaded weight and tongue load. A truck with a higher maximum loaded trailer weight may not offer the payload or axle headroom your particular trip needs.

For each candidate, line up the model year, engine variant, cab and bed or wheelbase, drivetrain, axle ratio, trim, towing packages, maximum loaded trailer weight, GCWR, payload, rear GAWR and hitch limits. Then compare those figures with the loaded trailer and expected passengers and cargo. If two trucks have different model years, use each year’s own guide and labels rather than carrying a number from one year to the other.
