But the available Consumer Reports material does not establish that Rivian was definitively last, provide an exact score, or show that every Rivian will have problems.
What Consumer Reports says about Rivian
Consumer Reports’ current Rivian overview describes a recurring split: “Rivian usually ranks near the bottom of our predicted reliability rating, but near the top in our owner satisfaction surveys.” That is Consumer Reports’ characterization of the brand, not a claim that reliability and owner satisfaction are the same measure.
For the 2026 survey, Consumer Reports identified the R1T among the least reliable vehicles. Its reliability coverage also characterizes both Rivian models as well below average. The reported finding is serious, but the source material available here does not establish an exact Rivian score or complete rank table. It therefore does not support saying Rivian was conclusively last, or that each Rivian model occupied the same position.
What “reliability” means in this ranking
Consumer Reports bases its reliability ratings on subscriber survey information, not a controlled laboratory test or a count of failures across every Rivian on the road. Its latest survey release covered about 380,000 vehicles, including model years 2000 through 2025 and some early 2026 vehicles. The data volume was 27 percent higher than the previous year, according to Consumer Reports’ December 2025 announcement.

- Steerable wheels.
- Has opening doors.
- Detailed interior, exterior.
For its reliability charts, Consumer Reports tracks 20 potential trouble spots. The R1T profile includes areas such as the electric motor, EV charging, brakes, power equipment and electrical accessories. A low predicted-reliability rating reflects the survey-based outlook across these categories; it does not mean every vehicle will experience a failure, nor does it identify a single proven cause for Rivian’s result. Consumer Reports’ 2026 R1T reliability profile describes the survey and trouble spots.
Reliability rankings are not the same as brand report-card rankings
Consumer Reports’ 2026 Automotive Brand Report Card combines several dimensions: road-test scores for more than 200 new vehicles, safety performance, reliability and owner satisfaction. Its 2026 brand-ranking coverage also says a brand needed data for at least two models from qualifying recent model years to be ranked.
Rank #2
- Brand new box.
- Real rubber tires.
- Steerable wheels.
- Has opening doors.
- Detailed interior, exterior.
That broader brand report card should not be treated as a pure reliability leaderboard. A brand’s overall report-card standing incorporates more than predicted reliability, while an individual model’s reliability rating concerns that vehicle. The R1T finding and Rivian’s brand-level reliability characterization are related evidence, but they are not interchangeable ranks.

Reliability measures expected trouble; owner satisfaction measures whether owners are pleased with their vehicles. Consumer Reports reports those separately, and its Rivian overview says satisfaction is often near the top even as predicted reliability is near the bottom. A positive ownership experience and concerns about the likelihood of problems can coexist. Neither measure cancels out the other.

What a Rivian shopper should take from the result
- Use it as a warning, not a prediction for every truck or SUV. The rating is based on survey responses and describes expected reliability at the model or brand level.
- Check the specific model and model year. The R1T’s 2026 survey finding is not an exact rating for every Rivian year or model. Consumer Reports also publishes a 2025 R1S reliability profile.
- Keep the measures separate. Reliability, safety, road-test performance and owner satisfaction answer different questions; the overall brand report card combines them.
- Do not infer a specific defect from the rank alone. The cited findings do not establish that one design or software issue caused the low predicted reliability.
