Can a Flipper Zero Break Into Cars? What the Reports Actually Say

The Flipper Zero car-hacking headlines concerned third-party patches claimed to unlock some vehicles—not proof that the gadget can start and steal them.

The gadget behind the August 2025 headline is the Flipper Zero, a general-purpose handheld multi-tool. Reports described unofficial software patches that their sellers claimed could unlock some cars. That is not the same as proving the device can start a vehicle or steal it: Flipper Devices says the methods discussed do not start the engine, and that relay attacks against keyless systems are a different technique.

What the $169 headline was referring to

HotHardware’s August 22, 2025 report summarized an investigation by 404 Media about third-party patches for the Flipper Zero. The $169 figure was the price used in that 2025 headline, not a current official price. Flipper Devices’ product listing described the device as an access-control multi-tool with NFC, RFID, sub-GHz radio and infrared capabilities; it displayed a price of $199 when accessed on October 4, 2026. The reported car-related patches were third-party additions, not features established as part of a standard Flipper Zero purchase. 404 Media’s August 21, 2025 article described an underground market in which sellers claimed patches could unlock cars from several manufacturers. The accessible portion of that report is limited; its full post is for paid members. 404 Media’s report

Does it unlock a car, start it, or steal it?

Those are different outcomes. The reporting concerns claims of unlocking vehicle doors. In an August 23, 2025 update, HotHardware quoted Flipper Devices saying the KeeLoq-related methods described may unlock doors but do not start the engine. That is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independently reproduced test of the patches or vehicles. HotHardware’s updated report · Flipper Devices’ response

Flipper Devices says the discussed methods reuse older techniques documented as far back as 2006. It also distinguishes them from relay attacks against keyless-entry and start systems: in the manufacturer’s explanation, a relay attack passes a live signal between a vehicle and its key, using purpose-built equipment. The company’s explanation should not be treated as independent confirmation of how any particular vehicle is secured.

What does “more than 200 vehicles” mean?

HotHardware reported that the alleged software could affect more than 200 vehicles, summarizing claims about its reach. That number was not independently verified in the available reporting, and it is not a confirmed count of vulnerable models. The material available here does not establish a reliable make-, model- and year-specific list or show that every vehicle counted can be opened in the same way.

For an owner, the practical distinction is that a broad number in a report cannot tell you whether your own vehicle is affected. A credible vehicle-specific conclusion would need confirmation for the exact model and year; the cited reports do not provide that independently verified basis.

Mechanism described Analysis of key-fob signals and related older methods Relaying a live signal between the car and its key
Source and evidentiary status 404 Media’s August 2025 reporting and HotHardware’s summary; specific vehicle effects were not independently verified here Flipper Devices’ August 2025 explanation, which is the manufacturer’s account rather than independent testing

What car owners can reasonably take from the reports

  • Do not read “break into cars” as proof that a Flipper Zero can start and drive away with a vehicle. The reports describe claimed access, while the manufacturer says the discussed methods do not start the engine.
  • Do not assume an ordinary device purchase includes unofficial vehicle patches, or that a headline’s fleet-wide figure confirms a vulnerability in your car.
  • If you are concerned about your vehicle, consult its manufacturer or dealer for guidance specific to its model and year. The cited coverage does not validate a universal accessory or other model-independent fix.
