Paul Walker’s personal R34s were not the silver-and-blue Skyline Brian O’Conner drives in 2 Fast 2 Furious. Walker first borrowed a different R34, Craig Lieberman’s MotoRex-associated car called Blackbird, for months; he later bought his own 1999 R34 V-Spec in Sonic Silver. The film used separate production cars, and the movie’s R34 look was inspired by Blackbird.
How Walker got access to an R34
Craig Lieberman, a technical advisor on the early films who helped Universal Studios with cars and automotive knowledge, introduced Walker to the R34. According to The Drive’s 2020 account, Walker visited MotoRex with Lieberman, became interested in Japanese cars, and borrowed Lieberman’s R34, Blackbird, for months.
Walker later purchased a separate 1999 R34 V-Spec in Sonic Silver. The Drive reports that MotoRex had federalized 14 R34s and that Walker’s purchased car was among them. That figure describes the cars federalized by MotoRex, not the number used in the film.
Which R34 appeared in the film?
Neither Blackbird nor Walker’s purchased V-Spec was the car seen onscreen, according to The Drive’s account. The production used its own R34 GT-Rs. The Petersen Automotive Museum’s record says four GT-Rs were imported new from Japan for 2 Fast 2 Furious.

The cars’ styling drew on Blackbird. A Skyline GT-R USA archive account describes Lieberman’s car as the template for the production R34s. In other words, Walker’s borrowed car helped inform the screen car’s appearance, but was not itself the movie car.
| R34 | Provenance | Connection to the film |
|---|---|---|
| Blackbird | MotoRex-associated demo car belonging to Lieberman; Walker borrowed it, and Lieberman later bought it. | Inspired the production cars’ look; not the same as Walker’s purchased V-Spec. |
| Walker’s 1999 V-Spec | Walker’s personal purchase in Sonic Silver. | The Drive says it was not onscreen in 2 Fast 2 Furious. |
| Production R34 GT-Rs | Four cars imported new from Japan for the production, according to Petersen Automotive Museum. | These were the film’s screen cars, including a documented jump-scene car. |
What the production R34 did in the movie
The Skyline appears at the start of 2 Fast 2 Furious, in the four-way street race between Brian O’Conner, Suki, Slap Jack, and Orange Julius. Brian then jumps the raised drawbridge. A Petersen Automotive Museum example filmed that jump and later served as a second hero car after the principal car was damaged during a take.

The story begins before the feature film: Red Bull Ring’s 2026 vehicle exhibition page notes that Brian is already driving the Skyline in The Turbo Charged Prelude for 2 Fast 2 Furious, which follows his journey from Los Angeles to Miami.

The Red Bull Ring exhibition describes the film treatment as silver paint, blue graphics, C-West body parts, large wheels, and blue underbody lighting. The Petersen record also notes bold graphics and blue neon underglow on its displayed example. It lists a NOS system for that vehicle; those details should be understood as applying to the particular documented car, not necessarily every production R34.
