If your GM vehicle has an Engine Oil Life System, use its alert as the primary signal for an oil change, while following the schedule and oil requirements in that vehicle’s owner’s manual. Chevrolet’s general guidance says to change the oil and filter every 7,500 miles or when the monitor indicates service. After “Change Engine Oil Soon” appears, arrange service as soon as possible and within the next 600 miles. Change the oil and filter at least once a year even if no alert appears.
That guidance does not establish one mileage interval for every GM vehicle. The right schedule depends on the instructions for the particular year, model, engine and market. The useful comparison is not simply “monitor or mileage”: it is the vehicle’s alert, its manual and Chevrolet’s general time and mileage guidance.

Oil Life System or mileage: which should you follow?
For a vehicle equipped with an Engine Oil Life System, the monitor is the main oil-change trigger; mileage is a useful cross-check, not a universal substitute for the vehicle’s instructions. The owner’s manual for the specific year, model, engine and market is the authority for the exact schedule and oil specification.
| Signal or rule | How to use it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Oil Life System alert | Schedule an oil-and-filter change promptly when the vehicle indicates service. | Chevrolet says to complete service as soon as possible and within 600 miles of the “Change Engine Oil Soon” alert. |
| 7,500 miles | Use as a general mileage cross-check. | Chevrolet’s general maintenance overview gives 7,500 miles or the Oil Life System indication; it is not a model-specific schedule. |
| One year | Change oil and filter at least annually, even if the monitor has not requested service. | This is Chevrolet’s general guidance; check the owner’s manual for vehicle-specific requirements. |
| 3,000 miles | Do not assume this is the required interval for a vehicle with an Oil Life System. | Chevrolet Certified Service says the 3,000-mile change is obsolete for most vehicles equipped with the system, not necessarily every older GM vehicle or every engine. |
The 7,500-mile figure and the monitor trigger are not competing universal rules. Chevrolet presents them together as general guidance, while the manual for the particular vehicle resolves what applies to that vehicle. If the manual gives a different interval or condition-based schedule, follow that vehicle-specific instruction rather than treating the general figure as an override.

In practical terms, use the first applicable instruction from the vehicle’s schedule, the monitor alert and the annual limit. If the alert arrives before a mileage reminder, do not wait for the odometer to catch up. If the odometer reaches a general interval but the display has not called for service, check the exact manual rather than assuming that a general figure settles the question. And even if neither mileage nor the monitor appears to call for service during the year, Chevrolet’s general guidance is to change the oil and filter at least once annually.
What the oil monitor measures—and what its alert means
The Engine Oil Life System estimates when service is due by considering operating conditions rather than simply counting down a fixed number of miles. Chevrolet says the system takes account of speed and engine temperature, along with driving habits and climate. Consequently, two vehicles—or the same vehicle driven in different conditions—may reach the service indication at different mileages.
This is why a mileage reminder copied from another owner is not a dependable substitute for your vehicle’s own indication and schedule. A friend with a similar-looking GM vehicle may have a different year, engine or configuration, and their driving conditions may differ too. Chevrolet describes the monitor as responding to operating conditions, not as a fixed countdown that produces the same mileage for every driver.

Chevrolet’s guidance is to arrange an oil-and-filter change as soon as possible after “Change Engine Oil Soon” appears, and no later than the next 600 miles. Treat that as a maximum window in the general guidance, not as a target to wait out if you can service the vehicle sooner. The alert means it is time to plan the oil-and-filter service; the applicable manual remains the place to confirm the vehicle’s exact instructions.
If the alert appears before your usual mileage reminder
Use the alert as the prompt to arrange service. Do not postpone the change simply because you have not reached a familiar mileage interval such as 7,500 miles. The monitor is responding to the vehicle’s estimated oil-service need, not waiting for that odometer number. Chevrolet’s support guidance says to schedule an oil-and-filter change as soon as possible, within the next 600 miles after the message appears.

For example, if the message appears well before the mileage at which you usually book service, the general advice is still to arrange the change promptly. The 600 miles are the outer limit in Chevrolet’s guidance, not an added interval to tack on after a preferred mileage rule. If you can have the service done sooner, do so.
If you reach a mileage interval without an alert
Check the owner’s manual and apply its schedule. Chevrolet’s broad overview lists 7,500 miles or an Oil Life System indication, and its general support guidance also sets an annual maximum. Neither general number replaces the schedule for your exact vehicle. If the vehicle reaches a mileage point mentioned in general advice but has no alert, use the manual to determine what applies to that model and configuration rather than treating the absence of an alert as permission to ignore the manual.
If a year passes without a monitor alert
Chevrolet’s general guidance is to change the oil and filter at least once a year even if the Oil Life System has not indicated service. The annual instruction is important for drivers who cover relatively little mileage: a low odometer reading does not remove the time-based limit in that guidance. Check the manual for any more specific schedule or instructions for the vehicle.
Is the 3,000-mile oil-change rule still true?
Not as a blanket rule for current GM vehicles. Chevrolet Certified Service says: “The majority of today’s Chevrolet vehicles are equipped with the Engine Oil Life System, which has made the 3,000-mile oil change obsolete.” That statement applies to most equipped Chevrolet vehicles; it should not be stretched into a promise about every older GM vehicle, engine, market or configuration.
The practical takeaway is not to replace 3,000 miles with a different universal number. Chevrolet’s general maintenance overview lists 7,500 miles or the Oil Life System indication, but that figure is also not a model-specific schedule. A vehicle’s manual and its equipment determine which guidance applies. Do not assume that 3,000 miles, 7,500 miles or a 10,000-mile interval is correct for every GM vehicle simply because you have seen that number used elsewhere.

If your vehicle does not have an Oil Life System, or if its manual specifies a mileage- or time-based interval, use that manual rather than borrowing the schedule for a newer vehicle. A generic interval cannot be applied responsibly without knowing the vehicle’s year, engine and operating requirements. Chevrolet’s statement about the 3,000-mile rule is specifically about the majority of today’s Chevrolet vehicles equipped with the system; it does not settle the maintenance interval for every older GM model.
How to find the exact GM oil-change schedule
- Identify the vehicle. Note its model year, make and model, and the engine or powertrain configuration if the manual lookup requests it. A broad GM maintenance statement cannot resolve a difference between vehicle configurations.
- Use GM’s owner’s manual lookup. GM says manuals are available for new, older and electric vehicles. Select the matching year, make and model to find the instructions for your vehicle.
- Find the relevant manual sections. Look for the maintenance schedule and the sections covering engine oil, oil life monitoring and service messages. Read the instructions that match the vehicle and its operating conditions.
- Confirm the oil requirement. Check the manual for the oil specification and viscosity before buying oil or authorizing service. Do not select a product based on a recommendation for a different GM vehicle.
- Act on the alert. If “Change Engine Oil Soon” appears, arrange the oil-and-filter change promptly and within Chevrolet’s stated 600-mile window. Do not let a year pass without a change under Chevrolet’s general annual guidance.
Chevrolet’s engine-oil support page describes the Oil Life System as featured in 2004 and newer GM vehicles. Treat that as Chevrolet’s general description, not a guarantee that every vehicle of those years, in every market or configuration, has the system. Confirm by checking the vehicle’s display, equipment and manual. The year statement is useful context, but the vehicle-specific manual is still the answer if you need to know whether a particular car has the feature and what schedule applies to it.
If you no longer have the printed manual, GM’s lookup page is the direct route to the vehicle-specific instructions. Use the year, make and model that match the vehicle rather than searching only for a broad GM oil-change interval. Manuals for older vehicles are included in GM’s lookup guidance, so an older vehicle does not automatically require using a recommendation written for a newer one.
Which oil and filter should you use?
Use the oil specification and viscosity stated in the owner’s manual, and replace the oil filter as part of the service. Chevrolet identifies dexos1 full synthetic as its recommended specification for gasoline engines, but directs owners to confirm the correct oil in the manual. That recommendation is not enough to establish the correct oil for every GM vehicle or powertrain, so do not select oil solely by make or brand.
The manual’s specification matters more than a generic recommendation based on an assumed GM model. The title “GM vehicle” covers different years, engines, fuel types and markets; the general Chevrolet guidance does not provide one universal viscosity or oil specification for them all. Before purchasing oil or approving a service, compare the product’s specification and viscosity with the exact requirement in the matching manual.

The same vehicle-specific approach applies to the filter: use a compatible filter for the exact engine and service requirements. Chevrolet’s general instructions refer to an oil-and-filter change, but do not establish one filter part number for every GM model. Ask a service provider to match the filter to the vehicle, or verify the fitment for the exact engine if buying parts yourself. No single oil grade or filter should be assumed to fit every GM vehicle.
What to do when the monitor and general mileage advice seem to conflict
- The alert appears before 7,500 miles: Treat it as the service trigger and consult the manual; Chevrolet says to schedule service promptly and within 600 miles.
- You reach 7,500 miles with no alert: Check the vehicle’s manual. Chevrolet’s figure is general guidance, and it does not eliminate the annual oil-and-filter change.
- A manual differs from a general Chevrolet overview: Use the manual matched to the specific vehicle. The overview is not a model-specific maintenance schedule.
- You are unsure whether your GM vehicle has the monitor: Verify the equipment in the vehicle and consult its manual. Chevrolet’s broad statement about 2004-and-newer vehicles does not establish equipment for every configuration.
- The vehicle is older or its manual is unavailable: Use GM’s manual lookup by year, make and model rather than assuming the interval for a newer vehicle applies.
- You drive very few miles: Do not assume low mileage means no oil service is needed. Chevrolet’s general guidance calls for an oil-and-filter change at least once a year even if the monitor has not requested one.
- You are booking service rather than doing it yourself: Ask for an oil-and-filter change using the oil specification, viscosity and filter appropriate to the exact vehicle. A certified oil-change service is an option for owners who do not perform their own maintenance, but confirm that the provider will follow the vehicle’s manual.
A practical decision sequence
When you are deciding whether to book an oil change, start with the vehicle rather than a rule of thumb. First, check whether the Oil Life System has displayed “Change Engine Oil Soon.” If it has, schedule an oil-and-filter change promptly and observe Chevrolet’s stated limit of 600 miles after the message appears. Next, compare the vehicle’s odometer and elapsed time with the manual’s maintenance schedule. Finally, observe Chevrolet’s general instruction to change oil and filter at least once a year even when there is no alert.
This sequence keeps the figures in context. The 600-mile window is tied to the alert; 7,500 miles is Chevrolet’s general maintenance-overview figure, not a guaranteed interval for every model; and one year is the annual maximum in Chevrolet’s general support advice. The 3,000-mile rule is not a universal requirement for vehicles equipped with the monitor, but that does not mean every GM vehicle has the same longer interval.
If the manual and a general overview appear to disagree, use the manual that matches the vehicle. If you cannot confirm the correct oil or filter, pause before buying a generic product or authorizing a change and check the manual or ask a service provider to match the parts to the specific vehicle. The sources cited here give no universal oil grade, filter part number or schedule that can replace that check.

What should I do when “Change Engine Oil Soon” appears?
Arrange an oil-and-filter change as soon as possible. Chevrolet says to complete service within the next 600 miles after the alert appears; do not treat that limit as a reason to delay service if you can have it done sooner.
I’ve heard that I should change my oil every 3,000 miles. Is that still true?
Not as a blanket rule for vehicles equipped with an Oil Life System. Chevrolet Certified Service says the system has made the 3,000-mile change obsolete for most current Chevrolet vehicles equipped with it. Older vehicles and different engines may have different instructions, so check the vehicle’s manual.
Is 7,500 miles the correct interval for every GM vehicle?
No. Chevrolet’s 7,500-mile figure is general maintenance-overview guidance, presented alongside the Oil Life System indication. It is not a model-specific schedule or a universal interval. Use the manual for the exact year, model, engine and market.

Which oil should I use in my GM vehicle?
Use the specification and viscosity in the owner’s manual for the exact vehicle. The Bottom Line
For a GM vehicle with an Engine Oil Life System, let its alert prompt service, and arrange an oil-and-filter change as soon as possible and within 600 miles of “Change Engine Oil Soon.” Cross-check the vehicle-specific owner’s manual, use its oil and filter requirements, and change oil and filter at least once a year under Chevrolet’s general guidance.
