How Nissan’s VC-Turbo Variable-Compression Engine Balances Efficiency and Power

Nissan’s VC-Turbo is a gasoline engine that changes compression as load changes. Here’s how its multi-link mechanism balances efficiency and power, and why “gasoline and diesel” is an analogy, not a literal combination.

Nissan’s VC-Turbo is a turbocharged gasoline engine that continuously changes its compression ratio as driving conditions change. It can use a higher ratio for efficiency at low load and a lower ratio when load and turbo boost rise. That resembles the efficiency-versus-power tradeoff often associated with gasoline and diesel engines; it does not burn diesel fuel or switch between fuels.

What “the best of gasoline and diesel” means—and what it doesn’t

The phrase describes an intended balance, not a combination of two engine types. Nissan’s VC-Turbo uses gasoline combustion. Its variable compression system is designed to favor efficiency when the engine is lightly loaded, while a turbocharger and a lower compression ratio help it deliver power under heavier load. Nissan’s technical description does not establish that it matches a diesel across fuel economy, emissions, or other measures.

The published fuel-economy comparison is against a gasoline V6, not a diesel. Nissan’s 2021 Technical Review reports a 27% actual-traffic fuel-economy improvement for its 2.0-liter, four-cylinder VC-Turbo comparison against a 3.5-liter V6. That is Nissan’s result for that comparison—not a guaranteed gain for every vehicle, route, or driver.

Why vary compression in the first place?

A conventional engine has a fixed compression ratio: the relationship between the volume in a cylinder when the piston is at the bottom of its stroke and the volume when it is at the top. A higher ratio can support greater efficiency, but it also raises the temperature of the compressed air-fuel mixture. Under high load, that can increase the risk of knock, abnormal combustion that an engine must avoid.

At light load, such as steady cruising, the engine can generally tolerate a higher compression ratio. During acceleration or other high-load operation—especially when turbocharging increases intake pressure—a lower ratio helps manage knock risk. Nissan’s system continuously varies between 14:1 at low load and 8:1 under high load, rather than choosing one fixed ratio for all conditions. Nissan’s VC-Turbo technical explainer describes the mechanism and operating range.

How Nissan’s multi-link system changes the ratio

In a conventional engine, a connecting rod links the piston to the crankshaft. Nissan replaces that arrangement with a multi-link mechanism. The piston still moves through a stroke, but changing the linkage geometry changes how far it reaches relative to the cylinder head, and therefore changes the compression ratio.

  • 【Buy without Inconfidence】Nissan Juke MR16DDT applications use multiple turbo part revisions. Compare the original turbo identification number, actuator configuration, mounting flange and vehicle build information before installation; professional installation is recommended.
  1. An actuator motor moves an arm. The engine control system calls for a ratio appropriate to operating conditions, and the motor moves the actuator arm.
  2. The arm turns a control shaft. That shaft shifts the lower link in the multi-link assembly.
  3. The linkage changes the piston’s position. The revised geometry alters the piston’s stroke position and the volume left above it at the top of the stroke.
  4. The engine continuously adjusts its ratio. The mechanism can move between the stated 8:1 high-load and 14:1 low-load endpoints as conditions change.

The actuator does not move the cylinder itself. It changes the linkage that determines the piston’s reach. Nissan says the arrangement also keeps the upper link more vertical during piston movement, which reduces piston-side friction and helps limit vibration.

What else contributes to the engine’s operation?

Variable compression is one part of the system, not the entire efficiency strategy. Nissan also describes a wide-range turbocharger and an electric wastegate. At low load, variable valve timing can use an Atkinson cycle to reduce pumping loss. These features work alongside the multi-link mechanism; the 8:1–14:1 specification is a compression-ratio range, not a fuel-saving percentage.

What Nissan’s 27% figure does—and doesn’t—show

Nissan Technical Review No. 87 (2021) reports a 27% actual-traffic fuel-economy improvement in a comparison involving the 2.0-liter, four-cylinder VC-Turbo and a 3.5-liter V6. Nissan presents the result in the context of reducing engine displacement and cylinder count while using the VC-Turbo’s high compression capability. It is evidence for that Nissan comparison, not a general claim about how much any VC-Turbo vehicle saves in ordinary driving.

The figure also cannot answer whether a VC-Turbo is more economical than a diesel. The cited comparison is not against a diesel engine, and it does not establish a universal result across vehicles or test methods.

Which Nissan and INFINITI vehicles have used VC-Turbo engines?

Nissan and INFINITI sources document several applications, but these historical examples do not establish the full current lineup or availability in every market.

Engine and application What the cited source establishes
2.0-liter VC-Turbo Introduced in the 2019 INFINITI QX50 and 2019 Nissan Altima; Nissan’s Technical Review identifies the KR20DDET as its first mass-production variable-compression engine.
1.5-liter, three-cylinder VC-Turbo Introduced across the 2022 Nissan Rogue lineup. Nissan’s North American release listed 201 horsepower, 225 lb-ft of torque, and estimated fuel economy of 33 mpg combined for that model year.

The Rogue’s power and fuel-economy figures are specific to the 2022 model-year announcement and should not be assumed for later models. Nissan’s release provides those model-year details.

What this explanation can’t tell you about ownership

The cited technical and vehicle announcements explain how the system works and document particular applications. They do not establish current model-year availability, reliability rates, recall status, repair costs, or service requirements. Those questions need current, market-specific vehicle information; neither the mechanism’s complexity nor Nissan’s performance claims alone prove how an engine will fare in ownership.
