Nissan ranked highest among mass-market brands in the 2025 J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), announced June 26, 2025. It placed second overall, behind Lexus. That result reflects owners’ reported problems during the first 90 days—not a finding that every Nissan is best-built or that the brand leads long-term reliability. Nissan’s 2026 result was second among mass-market brands.
What Nissan’s No. 1 ranking means
The award is specific to the 2025 IQS and to the mass-market brand category. J.D. Power’s chart placed Nissan first among mass-market brands, while Lexus ranked highest overall and among premium brands. J.D. Power cautions that numerical rankings are not necessarily statistically significant, so the result should be read as a category ranking, not proof of a meaningful quality gap between every brand in the list. In practical terms, Nissan’s ranking says its new-vehicle owners reported fewer problems on the study’s measure than owners of other mass-market brands during the period assessed. It does not establish that every Nissan model outperformed every competitor, nor does it measure how vehicles hold up over years of use.
What the Initial Quality Study measures
The 2025 study surveyed purchasers and lessees of new 2025 model-year vehicles about their first 90 days of ownership. Nissan says the study covered 223 potential problems across nine categories, including infotainment, features, driving experience and build quality. Results are expressed as problems per 100 vehicles (PP100); a lower number indicates fewer reported problems. Nissan’s 2025 announcement.

Initial quality is a short-term ownership measure. It can reflect issues noticed soon after delivery, but it is not a direct measure of long-term durability, repair costs or reliability over a vehicle’s life. A good 90-day result may be useful when judging the early ownership experience; it cannot answer how a car will perform after years of driving.
Which Nissan models led their segments in 2025?
Nissan’s announcement named the Altima as the highest-ranked Midsize Car and the Sentra as the highest-ranked Compact Car. The Rogue, Frontier and Pathfinder placed among the top three in their respective segments. J.D. Power’s 2025 chart confirms the Sentra and Altima segment leads. These are within-segment, first-90-day comparisons, not claims that those models are the best choices for every buyer.

What changed in the 2026 study?
Nissan’s June 2026 announcement says the brand ranked second among mass-market brands in the 2026 U.S. IQS. The Rogue ranked No. 1 in the Compact SUV segment. Nissan describes the 2026 study as asking owners about 227 potential problems across nine categories during the first 90 days. Nissan’s 2026 IQS announcement.
That later result matters when interpreting the older headline: Nissan’s No. 1 mass-market brand position belongs to the 2025 edition, not the current 2026 ranking. Nissan Americas chairman Christian Meunier said, “Quality is foundational to how we design, engineer and build every Nissan. That focus is reflected in our performance in the JD Power Initial Quality Study.” This is Nissan’s explanation of its approach, not independent evidence that a particular manufacturing change caused either year’s ranking.

How to use the award when shopping
Use the IQS as one data point about early ownership, then compare the specific model year and trim you are considering on factors the ranking does not settle:
- Total price: Check the vehicle’s current price and the cost of the trim and options you actually want.
- Warranty: Compare coverage terms and any conditions that matter to your ownership plans.
- Fuel economy: Match the vehicle’s efficiency to your expected mileage and driving mix.
- Safety equipment: Confirm which features are standard or optional on the exact trim.
- Space and comfort: Evaluate passenger room, cargo needs and fit through a test drive.
- Long-term reliability: Consult evidence that measures reliability over a longer ownership period; the IQS is not a substitute for it.
The 2025 ranking can help identify Nissan as a strong performer for reported problems early in ownership. It cannot determine whether a Sentra, Altima or another Nissan is the right purchase for a particular driver.
