That extra air can support more power from the same displacement, or let a manufacturer use a smaller engine to deliver a target output. It does not automatically make a car faster, more fuel-efficient, more reliable, or the better choice: those outcomes depend on the particular engine, vehicle, calibration, and use.
What is the difference between naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines?
The defining difference is how the engine gets air. Both types burn a mixture of air and fuel in the cylinders, but a naturally aspirated engine has no turbocharger compressing its intake air. A turbocharged engine uses energy in the exhaust to run a compressor in the intake system. The compressor raises the air pressure and density, so more oxygen can enter the cylinders.

“Naturally aspirated” does not mean that air simply falls into the engine without help. As the pistons move and the intake valves open, the engine draws air into the cylinders. Intake design and valve timing affect how well it fills. The distinction is that it does not use a turbocharger to force in compressed air.

A turbo is a way of changing an engine’s airflow, not a separate type of fuel or combustion. Engine controls must supply suitable fuel and manage operating limits such as temperature and knock. The exact hardware varies: a turbo system may include an intercooler, wastegate, variable-geometry components, or other controls, but those parts are not identical on every engine.

How does a turbocharger work?
Exhaust spins the turbine
After combustion, exhaust gas leaves the engine and spins a turbine. The turbine and intake compressor are connected by a shared shaft. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes turbochargers as powered by the pressure of engine exhaust as it leaves the engine. In effect, the turbo uses exhaust flow to drive the compressor rather than relying only on the engine’s intake stroke to fill the cylinders.
The compressor supplies denser intake air
On the other side of the shaft, the compressor increases the pressure of air entering the engine. More air density means more oxygen can be present in a cylinder, allowing the engine to burn more fuel when its calibration and operating limits permit. That is the basic reason a turbocharged engine can produce more power than a naturally aspirated engine of the same displacement. The EPA summarizes the principle this way: “Turbochargers increase the power that an engine can produce by forcing more air, and thus fuel, into the engine.”
Output changes with conditions
A turbo does not supply one fixed amount of boost at every engine speed and load. The response and torque delivery depend on the hardware, controls, and operating conditions. Turbo engines therefore should not all be described as having the same delay, or “turbo lag,” or the same power curve. For a particular car, the manufacturer’s power and torque curves and independent instrumented testing are more useful than assumptions based on the word “turbocharged.”
Does a turbo give you more horsepower?
It can. For a given engine displacement, a manufacturer can design a turbocharged engine to put more air into the cylinders than a naturally aspirated counterpart. With appropriate fueling and calibration, that can support greater power. Turbocharging can also be used to reduce displacement while retaining a desired power level. These are engineering capabilities, not a guarantee that every turbo engine makes more horsepower than every NA engine.

Horsepower alone is not enough to predict how a car feels or performs. Compare the output and torque curves for the specific engines, as well as their transmissions and vehicle configurations. Peak figures do not show the whole shape of the power delivery, and a car’s mass, gearing, and the conditions in which it is driven also matter. If two vehicles are under consideration, make the comparison using the same model year and market where possible, rather than comparing a general description of one engine type with a specific specification for another.
Do turbo engines use more fuel?
Not necessarily. Turbocharging can make a smaller engine capable of delivering a power level that might otherwise require a larger engine. If a manufacturer uses that opportunity to downsize, the smaller turbocharged engine may be more fuel-efficient than a larger naturally aspirated one while retaining power. But turbocharging itself is not a promise of lower consumption. The result depends on the engine and transmission calibration, vehicle mass and aerodynamics, gearing, ambient conditions, trip profile, and how much power the driver demands.
Why the trip matters
A 2016 analysis published by SAE compared naturally aspirated engines with downsized turbocharged engines in vehicles with automatic transmissions using U.S. drive cycles. It found that the efficiency advantage of downsizing was substantial in situations with comparatively high losses, such as the city cycle or high displacement-to-mass cases. It was small where losses were low, such as highway operation or low displacement-to-mass cases. The practical lesson is not that one engine type always wins, but that the comparison can change with the vehicle and its use.
For example, a driver whose trips are mostly highway miles should look at official highway and combined figures for the exact vehicles rather than assuming a downsized turbo will deliver large savings. A driver with substantial city use should still check the exact city-cycle figures; the SAE finding describes a pattern across its study, not a guaranteed result for any present-day model. Official economy figures are useful for comparing vehicles tested under the same market’s procedures, but actual consumption will vary with driving and conditions.

What historical study figures can and cannot tell you
A 2004 SAE paper by Petitjean, Bernardini, Middlemass, and Shahed analyzed several hundred family sedans over a ten-year period. In that production-vehicle analysis, it reported about 30% gasoline-engine downsizing and an 8–10% fuel-economy improvement for the same power. The paper also reported about an 18% improvement in experimental downsized engines in the same vehicle at the same power and performance. Those are findings for that paper’s analysis and experimental setup, not current-vehicle guarantees or a forecast for a particular model.
When comparing two cars, use the official economy figures for the relevant model year, market, and test cycle, then consider whether the test profile resembles your driving. A same-power comparison is different from comparing vehicles with different performance, weight, or equipment. The useful question is not simply whether turbo engines save fuel, but whether the complete turbocharged vehicle you are considering uses less fuel than the particular alternative for the kind of driving you do.
Which engine lasts longer, NA or turbo?
There is no universal answer established by the EPA and SAE material discussed here. It does not provide a comparative long-term reliability ranking that shows all naturally aspirated engines last longer, or that turbocharged engines are inherently unreliable. Reliability depends on the specific engine family and design generation, maintenance, use, and condition of the individual vehicle. A turbocharger adds components and thermal-management demands, but counting components by itself does not predict lifetime or repair cost.

Check the owner’s manual for requirements
Do not assume that every turbo engine requires premium fuel, a special oil interval, or a particular cooling-system service. Requirements vary by vehicle. Before buying, check the owner’s manual or manufacturer documentation for the exact model and engine, including the required fuel grade, oil specification and interval, and any cooling-system requirements. Then compare those requirements with the NA alternative and the car’s service records.
What about emissions and environmental impact?
Turbocharging alone does not establish whether a vehicle has lower emissions. Calibration, after-treatment equipment, fuel, load, test cycle, and whether the comparison holds power or vehicle performance constant all affect the result. The evidence here does not support a universal claim that turbocharged engines are cleaner or dirtier than naturally aspirated engines. For a current purchase, compare the vehicle-level emissions and fuel-economy information for the exact model year and market.
An older 1973 SAE paper reported a 20% average fuel-economy improvement for its particular engine and steady-state test setup and said emissions per mile were relatively unchanged compared with a larger naturally aspirated engine of equal power. That result is tied to a dated experiment and its conditions; it should not be used to predict emissions from current vehicles.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow common are turbocharged engines?
Turbocharging is common in recent U.S. vehicle production. The EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report: Fuel Economy, and Technology since 1975 says gasoline turbocharged engines, including those in hybrid electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, represented more than 44% of vehicle production in model year 2024. This is a U.S. production figure for that model year and category. It is not a worldwide share, a count of vehicles sold, or a 2026 market figure.

How to compare two actual vehicles
When deciding between a specific naturally aspirated car and a specific turbocharged one, compare complete vehicles on consistent terms. Match the model year and market where possible, and note differences in trim and equipment. Use the following checks to avoid treating the engine label as the whole decision:
- Compare output and torque curves. Look beyond peak horsepower at how output is delivered across engine speeds. Use the specifications for the exact engine and, where available, independent instrumented tests of the vehicle.
- Match fuel-economy data to your driving. Compare the official figures on the same relevant test cycle. Consider your city/highway mix and typical passenger or cargo load; the efficiency effect of downsizing can vary with operating conditions.
- Check the required fuel grade. Use the requirement in the owner’s manual or manufacturer documentation for each exact model. Do not infer it from the presence or absence of a turbo.
- Read the maintenance schedule and warranty. Compare the prescribed maintenance, oil specification and interval, cooling-system requirements, warranty coverage, and service access for the vehicles you are considering.
- Evaluate the individual vehicle. For used cars, consider service history, recalls, model-specific service information, and an inspection. The engine type alone cannot establish the condition of a particular vehicle.
- Compare the configured cars, not an abstract engine category. Purchase price, transmission, vehicle mass, gearing, equipment, and intended use all influence whether one option is a better fit.
Choosing between naturally aspirated and turbocharged
A naturally aspirated engine may suit a buyer whose preferred car meets their needs for power, economy, and ownership requirements without forced induction. A turbocharged engine may suit a buyer who wants the output a manufacturer has designed into that particular setup, or is considering a downsized engine intended to retain power. Neither description settles the decision without the vehicle’s specifications and maintenance requirements.
Use the intended driving pattern to guide the comparison, but do not turn the study findings into a rule that city drivers should always choose a turbo or highway drivers should always choose an NA engine. The 2016 SAE analysis found differing efficiency advantages across drive-cycle and displacement-to-mass conditions; it did not rank every contemporary engine. Compare the actual alternatives’ economy figures, power curves, fuel needs, maintenance schedules, warranty, and condition, and decide which trade-offs matter for your use.
