A small SUV can offer substantially more usable cargo capacity than a compact sedan without providing a dramatically roomier passenger cabin. In 2026 U.S.-market examples, the Honda HR-V has more space behind the rear seats and a much larger maximum cargo area with those seats folded than the Honda Civic Sedan. Yet their published passenger volumes and rear legroom are nearly equal. The comparison is a useful illustration, not a rule for every SUV and sedan: trim, powertrain, cargo shape, and the exact vehicle all matter.

Honda’s specifications show why “space” needs more than one answer. The passenger-volume totals describe the cabin; cargo figures describe the area available for belongings under a particular seat configuration. A vehicle can be notably more flexible for hauling without having a comparably larger passenger compartment.

Passenger volume is a published measure of interior space, not a guarantee that two cabins feel identical. Seating position, roof shape, door openings, console placement, and the shape of the footwell influence how space feels to occupants. A volume total cannot tell you whether a particular passenger will find the seat comfortable or have room to stretch their legs.

In these examples, the published passenger-volume figures are close when comparing the HR-V’s non-moonroof value with the Civic’s non-hybrid value. The Civic’s listed total is slightly higher in that pairing, while the HR-V lists a small rear-legroom advantage and more rear headroom. These are specification differences, not proof that every person will prefer one rear seat. A tall passenger may care more about head clearance; another may notice seat-cushion shape or how easily they can get in and out.
Trim matters. Honda lists a lower passenger-volume figure for the HR-V with moonroof trim, and its Civic figures differ between conventional and hybrid trims. Compare the exact trim and powertrain you intend to buy rather than treating a model’s highest or most commonly quoted number as universal.
Cargo room: the seat position changes the comparison
With the rear seats in use, the HR-V’s published cargo figure is larger than the Civic Sedan’s trunk capacity. That makes the SUV the more promising starting point for carrying several bags or bulky everyday items while keeping the rear seats available. The difference is not a precise prediction of what fits: a cargo bay and a sedan trunk have different shapes, openings, and access routes.

The HR-V also has a published maximum cargo capacity with the rear seats folded. That maximum is useful when you can give up rear passenger seating to carry larger loads. It should not be set beside a sedan’s trunk figure as though the two measurements describe the same arrangement. The Civic specification page cited here does not state a comparable folded-seat maximum, so a numerical maximum-to-maximum comparison is not established by these figures.
Cargo volume is measured in cubic feet, but that number does not reveal the opening’s height and width, the shape of the load floor, or whether a long object can pass through the opening and lie flat. A box may have a volume lower than a vehicle’s stated capacity and still fail to fit because one dimension is too large. Conversely, soft luggage can sometimes be arranged around contours that would block a rigid object.
A second sedan shows why one comparison is not a class average
The Toyota Corolla LE provides another 2026 sedan reference. Toyota’s comparison lists 13.1 cu ft of cargo capacity for the Corolla LE, while the Civic LX is listed at 14.8 cu ft. The same comparison reports 34.8 in of Corolla LE rear legroom and 37.4 in for the Civic LX. Toyota says its comparison figures are for comparison purposes and may not be comprehensive.

Honda’s own comparison of 2026 non-hybrid sedans lists 99.0 cu ft of passenger volume for the Civic and 88.6 cu ft for the Corolla. That is Honda’s published comparison, not an independent test. The different results across two sedans underline the central caution: one HR-V and Civic comparison cannot establish what every B-segment SUV offers relative to every compact sedan. Model, trim, and the source’s measurement conventions all shape the numbers.
How to check whether your belongings will fit
If the decision depends on a stroller, suitcase, instrument, sports equipment, or another specific item, use the published volume as a first filter and verify the item in person before committing. The cited specifications give capacities and selected cabin measurements; they do not document a hands-on luggage-fit test or prove that any particular object fits.
- Choose the exact vehicles. Note model year, trim, powertrain, and whether a moonroof or other trim feature changes the published passenger-volume figure. Make sure you are looking at U.S.-market specifications if that is where you will buy.
- Decide how the rear seats will be used. Compare cargo capacity with the seats up if passengers need those seats. Consider a folded-seat maximum only if you are willing to reduce rear seating for the trip or load.
- Measure the item that matters. Record its length, width, and height, including handles, wheels, or other parts that cannot be removed. For awkward objects, note which orientation is acceptable.
- Inspect the cargo opening and floor. Check opening height and width, floor shape, and the path the object must follow to get inside. These practical checks are not established by a cubic-foot rating.
- Try the actual load, if possible. Bring the item to the dealership or use a same-size object. Test the necessary seat configuration and confirm that the cargo area can close without forcing the load.
