A NASCAR car number does not automatically follow the driver. A team can replace the driver in an existing numbered entry and keep its number, as documented changes involving the No. 44, No. 77 and No. 21 show. A number appearing with a different team for a particular race is a separate case: Jimmie Johnson’s announced No. 48 use in the 2027 Daytona 500 is a one-event agreement, not evidence of a permanent transfer.
What changes when a NASCAR team replaces a driver?
It helps to distinguish the driver from the numbered car entry. The entry is the team’s car identity for a race or season; the driver is the person assigned to drive it. NASCAR’s Cup team explainer describes teams in terms of their different car numbers and crew chiefs for each driver, while NASCAR’s identification guide lists a driver’s last name separately from the car’s numbers. Those are related pieces of information, but they are not the same thing.

That distinction explains how a replacement can drive a familiar number without taking that number away from the outgoing driver in every other context. When a team changes its driver, it may continue the existing entry under the same number. The number identifies the entry in the examples; it should not be read as a permanent personal identifier attached to one driver.

Here, “entry” is a useful way to describe the team-and-car context in an announcement, not a claim about the formal legal status of a NASCAR number. A driver change can alter who is behind the wheel without changing the team, car number or crew chief associated with that entry. The public examples demonstrate that practical separation, but they do not set out the full administrative steps behind a substitution.

“Reassigning a number” can describe more than one situation, so the phrase needs care. A new driver taking over a team’s existing numbered car is not the same as a number being used by a different team for a specific race. The examples below demonstrate both arrangements, but they do not establish a complete set of rules for allocating or transferring NASCAR numbers.
Does the number go with the driver?
Not automatically. In the documented replacement examples, the incoming driver takes the place of the outgoing driver in a numbered team entry; the number remains associated with that entry. That is true whether the change occurs partway through a season or is announced for a future season.
The driver’s name and the number also serve separate visible-identification roles. NASCAR’s 2025 Cup paint-scheme and identification guide labels the driver’s last name separately from the door, roof and bumper numbers. This supports the distinction between a person’s name and the car’s number. It does not, by itself, explain all requirements or approvals for changing either marking.
That identification detail is useful when reading a car announcement or looking at the scheme guide: a name marking identifies the driver, while the door, roof and bumper numbers are separately identified markings on the car. The guide provides evidence that NASCAR treats them as distinct items. It does not tell readers that a team can change either marking without review, nor does it list every specification or approval required for a change.
How the documented changes differ
Timing and context matter. The following examples show a midseason driver replacement, a replacement announced for a later season, and a number used by another team under a one-event agreement. They should not be collapsed into one general claim that numbers permanently move with drivers or teams.

| Case | Timing | What changed | What the example establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| No. 44 and No. 77, Truck Series | During the 2025 season | Andrés Pérez de Lara took over Niece Motorsports’ No. 44 Truck, and Corey LaJoie took over Spire’s No. 77 for the remainder of the season. | A replacement driver can take over an existing numbered team entry. The cited NASCAR entry-list report does not describe a permanent number transfer. |
| No. 21, Wood Brothers Racing | For the 2027 season | NASCAR announced that Jesse Love would replace Josh Berry in the No. 21. | The announced change is a season-to-season driver replacement in the described Wood Brothers entry; the number remains the No. 21. |
| No. 48, Daytona 500 | For the 2027 Daytona 500 only | Jimmie Johnson is set to drive a No. 48 Toyota under an agreement with Hendrick Motorsports. Alex Bowman, Hendrick’s current No. 48 driver, is to use another number for that race. | A NASCAR announcement describes event-specific use of the number by a different team under an agreement. It is not evidence that the No. 48 has been permanently transferred. |
The key comparison is not simply which driver appears next to which number. Ask when the change applies, whether it is still the same team entry, and whether another team is using the number under an announced agreement. The No. 44 and No. 77 examples are replacements for the remainder of a season; the No. 21 announcement concerns a future season; the No. 48 arrangement is expressly tied to one race.
The No. 21 has a long history with Wood Brothers Racing: NASCAR’s announcement says the number has been associated with 101 wins across many decades. That context helps explain why the number is notable in the Love announcement, but the win total says nothing about number rights or the mechanics of driver replacement. Love said, “Driving the No. 21 for Wood Brothers Racing is truly an honor.” That is a statement about the significance of the ride, not a description of NASCAR policy.

What does a one-event number agreement mean?
The No. 48 arrangement is different from replacing a driver in a team’s own entry. NASCAR’s 2026 announcement says Johnson, the owner of Legacy Motor Club, is planned to drive a No. 48 Toyota in the 2027 Daytona 500 under an agreement with Hendrick Motorsports. Bowman, who is Hendrick’s current No. 48 driver, is to drive another number for that race.
The description is specific to one event. It shows that the No. 48 can be used in a different team and driver context for an announced race under an agreement. It does not show that Johnson’s team acquired the number permanently, that Bowman’s number changed for the rest of the season, or that the same arrangement applies to other teams or events.
The number has historical significance in this particular story: NASCAR’s report notes that Johnson recorded 83 race wins and seven championships with the No. 48. Johnson described the number’s personal importance by saying, “This is far more than a number.” That quote and the record explain why this specific Daytona 500 plan attracts attention. They are context, not a statistic about number transfers or a rule governing them.

What does NASCAR’s public material say about approvals?
The 2025 NASCAR event-roster structure document says changes made after the roster deadline require NASCAR approval. Its scope is roster structure and deadline-related changes. It should not be treated as a complete explanation of the process for substituting a driver, changing a car number, or obtaining an event-specific number agreement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →This distinction matters for anyone trying to turn a news item into a checklist of formal requirements. The roster document supports the narrow statement that late roster changes require approval. It does not establish that this is the only approval relevant to a driver change, define the complete process for changing a number, or provide a universal timeline for submissions. The examples also do not include fee amounts, paperwork details or a cost schedule, so none can be stated from these announcements.
The public examples identify what NASCAR announced or listed, but they do not supply a comprehensive current Cup Series rulebook explanation of number assignment, transfer, or in-race driver substitutions. They therefore support a practical distinction—driver replacement is not automatically a number transfer—without resolving every formal step that teams must follow.
How to interpret a driver or number change
When a NASCAR announcement says a driver is replacing someone, first check whether it identifies an existing numbered entry. If it does, the clearest reading is that the driver is changing while that entry keeps its number, unless the announcement says otherwise. A replacement during the season, such as the No. 44 and No. 77 Truck changes, has a different time frame from a change announced for a following season, such as Love joining the No. 21 in 2027.
If the announcement instead says that another team will run a familiar number for one event, look for the scope and terms NASCAR actually states. In the No. 48 case, the described scope is the 2027 Daytona 500, the parties are Johnson’s Legacy Motor Club and Hendrick Motorsports, and Bowman is assigned another number for that race. That is a narrower claim than saying the number changed owners or moved permanently.

A careful reader can make the distinction without assuming details that have not been announced:
- Identify the team entry and number named in the announcement.
- Check whether the change is for the rest of a season, a future season, or a single event.
- Distinguish a new driver in an existing entry from another team’s event-specific use of a number.
- Note whether NASCAR describes an agreement, as it does for Johnson’s No. 48 Daytona 500 plan.
- Do not infer ownership, sale, lease, or permanent transfer from a driver announcement or one-event agreement alone.
These checks keep three easily confused claims separate: “a driver replaced another driver,” “a team retained its number with a new driver,” and “a different team will use that number for one named event.” NASCAR’s examples support the first two in the No. 44, No. 77 and No. 21 cases, and the event-specific arrangement in the No. 48 case. They do not establish that every number change follows the same route.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the examples do not prove
The cited NASCAR materials do not provide a complete current rulebook section explaining who formally controls number allocation, what paperwork is needed for a transfer, or the full procedure for approving driver substitutions. They also do not establish how often teams make these changes. No frequency statistic is provided in the cited material.
That limit matters because an announced outcome is not the same as a full account of the rule behind it. The examples are enough to answer the everyday question—does the number automatically follow the driver?—but not enough to make broad claims that teams own, sell, lease, or independently transfer numbers. For those formal questions, the announcement and roster materials described here are not a substitute for the applicable current NASCAR rulebook provisions.
Likewise, the No. 48 announcement cannot be generalized into a standard that any team may borrow any number for any event. The report documents a particular agreement involving Johnson and Hendrick Motorsports for the 2027 Daytona 500, and it says Bowman will use another number for that race. It does not specify a general agreement template, other parties’ rights, or the conditions under which another event-specific arrangement might be made.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a NASCAR driver keep a car number when changing teams?
Not automatically. The documented examples show numbers staying with team entries as drivers change. NASCAR’s public examples here do not establish a general rule that a driver carries a number to another team.
Can a team replace its driver and keep the same number?
Yes. In the examples, Andrés Pérez de Lara took over Niece Motorsports’ No. 44 Truck, Corey LaJoie took over Spire’s No. 77 for the rest of 2025, and Jesse Love was announced as Josh Berry’s replacement in Wood Brothers Racing’s No. 21 for 2027.
Is Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 Daytona 500 plan a permanent number transfer?
No. NASCAR described Johnson’s No. 48 Toyota use as an agreement with Hendrick Motorsports for the 2027 Daytona 500. Bowman is to use another number for that race; the announcement does not describe a permanent transfer.
Does NASCAR’s roster-deadline approval rule explain every driver substitution?
No. The 2025 event-roster document says changes after the roster deadline require NASCAR approval, but its scope is roster structure and deadline-related changes. It is not a complete account of driver substitutions or number allocation.
Are a driver’s name and a car number the same identification marking?
No. NASCAR’s 2025 Cup identification guide lists the driver’s last name separately from the door, roof and bumper numbers. It does not provide the full approval process for changing those markings.
Do the cited examples explain the cost or paperwork for changing a number?
No. The public materials described here do not provide fees, required paperwork, or a complete current rulebook procedure for number transfers.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: A NASCAR number does not automatically follow a driver. A team can keep the number on its entry when it replaces the driver, while another team’s one-event use of a number—such as Jimmie Johnson’s planned No. 48 for the 2027 Daytona 500—is a separate, limited arrangement. Public examples clarify that distinction, but do not explain the complete formal rules for number allocation or driver substitutions.
