Staying out can preserve track position but leave a car vulnerable on old tires; pitting can improve grip but put the car behind competitors who stay out. Neither choice guarantees a better restart, and there is no universal winning call.
What is at stake in the call?
A late caution creates a short window in which teams can change their cars’ prospects for the next restart. A team that pits for tires gives up some of its place in the running order to cars that remain on track. In return, its driver gets a fresher set for the restart and the laps that follow. A team that stays out keeps its position, but it must accelerate on the tires already on the car.

The decision is not simply “new tires versus old tires.” It is a prediction about where the car will restart after everyone’s choices are accounted for, how much traction it can use, how long the next run may be, and whether it has enough fuel to finish. A call that looks favorable before the field sorts itself out may look different once the actual restart order is known.

The risks run both ways. NASCAR vice president of race communications Mike Forde described teams that stay out on very old tires and then have a disastrous restart: “There’s been examples of guys who have stayed out on a crazy amount of tires and are in the lead, and then the restart is a disaster area.” But pitting can also hand the lead to a rival who stays out, as happened to Joey Logano at Bristol in 2019.

What does staying out gain—and risk?
The gain: keeping a place in the line
When a team stays out, it avoids surrendering positions to cars that pit. That can be especially valuable if only a few laps remain: the driver may have little time to recover places after rejoining behind cars that stayed on track. Track position can also be attractive when the car has usable grip and strong pace, or when the team believes the expected run is short.
Staying out can make sense when the tire set is not so worn that the car is likely to struggle, and when holding the current spot outweighs the potential benefit of fresher tires. The crew chief is not choosing an abstractly “safe” option; the choice depends on the car’s condition and the likely lineup after competitors make their own calls.
The risk: losing ground when the field accelerates
Old tires can leave a driver short of traction when the field launches. NASCAR’s account of a 2013 Richmond restart described leader Paul Menard losing traction on much older tires as Carl Edwards passed. That is an illustration of the position-versus-grip trade-off, not a guide to current restart procedures: the article concerns a 2013 event.
A team may also stay out hoping for another caution to change the circumstances. That is uncertain, not a benefit it can count on. In a NASCAR report on Kansas in 2026, a driver outside the lead fight stayed out on very old tires, lost control and brought out a caution. This case shows that the condition of a car on old tires can affect the race beyond its own restart result; it does not mean teams should expect a caution to rescue a stay-out strategy.

What does pitting for tires gain—and cost?
The gain: a fresher set for the restart
A tire stop gives the driver fresher tires for the restart, which may offer more grip than the worn set on the car. That potential advantage has to be weighed against the places lost to cars that do not pit, the time needed to regain them and the number of laps available to do so. The available case studies do not establish a universal lap-time gain from fresh tires, or a standard number of positions they will recover.
The cost: rejoining behind cars that stay out
At Bristol in 2019, Logano was leading when crew chief Todd Gordon called for four tires. Kyle Busch stayed out and took the lead; Logano restarted behind cars that had remained on track. Gordon said the decision felt close to 50-50. He chose tires partly because he trusted Logano to be aggressive and partly because he feared that cars on new tires would line up behind Logano if the team stayed out.
The call also depended on forecasting how other teams would behave. Gordon later said the number of cars that stayed out differed from his estimate. That matters because the value of a stop is relative: the result depends not only on the tires Logano received, but on which cars remained ahead and behind him.
Gordon said Logano’s tires had 33 laps on them and estimated about 18 laps until the restart. A delay while the lineup sorted out left about 15 laps instead. Those are details of this Bristol situation, not a general rule about how much time a late stop needs to pay off. Gordon described his broader approach this way: “You take the information you have at the time and make decisions from the information you’ve got.”

A late stop can be a deliberate restart play
NASCAR Latino’s page about the Cook Out 400 describes another late call: with only a few laps remaining, Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 team chose a four-tire stop to tackle the restart. The page identifies MRN’s Todd Gordon and NBC’s Steve Letarte discussing the strategy, but does not provide their detailed reasoning in the retrieved text. The example supports the fact that teams may make a four-tire stop with little race remaining; it does not establish why that call was made or how well it worked.
How should a crew chief compare the options?
A useful comparison begins with the likely restart result, not just the number of tires. Before deciding, the crew chief has to estimate how many competitors will pit, where those cars are positioned, how much track position the stop could cost and whether fresher tires can help make that ground back. The estimates are uncertain: rival calls may differ from expectations, and a restart can be delayed while officials sort the lineup.
| Choice | Potential advantage | Primary exposure | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stay out | Preserve the current place in the running order and avoid losing spots to cars that pit. | Restart on the existing tires, which may have less usable grip than fresh tires. | How worn are the tires? Is the car’s pace or restart ability strong enough? How many laps remain? |
| Pit for tires | Give the driver a fresher set for the restart and the ensuing run. | Rejoin behind cars that stay out; the lineup may include more such cars than expected. | How many rivals are likely to pit? Where will the car restart? Is there enough time to regain positions? |
| Change two tires | A partial tire change is an option where the rules and available service allow. | The effect relative to a four-tire stop is not established as a general formula. | What does event-specific evidence say about this car, track and tire? |
| Change four tires | Replace all four tires where permitted and selected by the team. | The team still risks losing track position to cars that stay out. | What is the likely restart order, and how much run remains to use the fresh set? |
The two-tire and four-tire choices cannot be ranked universally by the information available here. Their relative performance depends on the car, track, tires and number of competitors making each choice. Without event-specific evidence, it would be misleading to label either option consistently faster or safer.

Restart position and rivals’ likely calls
Estimate the actual lineup the car may face under each option. Consider how many cars are likely to pit or stay out and where they sit relative to the subject car. A stop’s strategic cost is not simply “a few places”: the relevant question is where the car is likely to restart after the other teams’ decisions and any applicable procedures are taken into account.

Tire condition and the expected run
Compare the age and expected grip of the current set with the fresh set. Do not assign a generic lap-time gain or tire-falloff rate without data for that track and tire. The potential return from fresh tires depends on whether the next run is long enough for the driver to use them and whether the car can pass the cars ahead.
Laps remaining and time to recover
With more laps available, a driver has more opportunity to work forward after a stop; with very few laps left, the cost of restarting behind stay-out cars may be difficult to overcome. But the lap count alone does not settle the decision: the condition of the old tires, the expected lineup and the car’s pace also matter. A delayed restart can shrink the time available, as it did in Gordon’s Bristol estimate.
Fuel and the chance of a caution
Fuel is a separate constraint that can narrow the available choices. A team may stretch fuel to gain position or wait for a caution, but it may still need to pit when the fuel window closes. NASCAR’s October 28, 2024 playoff analysis reported that Tyler Reddick’s team stretched fuel and ultimately pitted with 15 laps remaining. Crew chief Billy Scott had viewed a caution during the stretch as the team’s best chance. The event-specific detail illustrates how fuel strategy and a hoped-for caution can interact; it does not establish a general fuel threshold for other races.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCar and driver characteristics
A crew chief must account for the car’s pace and handling, its restart behavior and the driver’s ability to make passes. Gordon cited his confidence in Logano’s aggressive driving as part of the reasoning for the Bristol tire call. That was a judgment about one driver and one race, not a blanket claim that aggressive drivers should always pit.

How can you read a late-race call without oversimplifying it?
- Set the situation. Identify the caution, laps remaining, tire age or condition if it is reported, fuel context and the car’s running position. Distinguish confirmed race details from an analyst’s estimate.
- Describe both available paths. Explain what staying out preserves and what it risks, then what a tire stop may improve and what positions it may cost.
- Account for rival behavior. Say which cars stayed out or pitted when that information is available. If a crew chief was estimating rival calls, attribute the estimate rather than presenting it as a known outcome.
- Check what the restart actually looked like. A stop may not produce the expected position if more cars stay out than predicted or if the lineup takes time to sort out.
- Keep the verdict event-specific. Attribute the team’s explanation to its named crew chief or the reporting source. Do not infer access to private team telemetry or radio that the source does not report.
This approach separates the information available at decision time from the result that became clear afterward. A call can be reasonable based on the expected lineup and still produce a worse restart than hoped; a fortunate outcome does not prove that the underlying forecast was certain.
Which rules affect the decision?
NASCAR’s official “National Series Pit Road Penalties, 2025” card says that position during a caution is determined when the caution begins and prohibits passing unless NASCAR directs it. It also specifies a tail-of-field restart penalty for pitting outside the assigned box under yellow. These points show why a pit call cannot be separated from event procedures: a team must consider not just the tires but the effect of pit-road compliance and the applicable restart rules.
The card is a 2025 penalty reference, not a complete rulebook or confirmation of every procedure for a 2026 event. Restart order, pit-road rules, tire allotments and penalties can be series- and event-specific. For a particular race, verify the current rules for that series and event rather than carrying a past card or an older restart example forward as if it were current.

NASCAR announced a separate wet-weather tire policy change on September 16, 2026. At designated ovals approved for wet-weather racing, teams may choose when to switch between wet-weather tires and slicks as conditions change. That is a decision about tire configuration as weather changes; it is distinct from the ordinary late-caution choice between staying out on the current set and stopping for fresh tires.
Why there is no universal winning formula
The cases show different sides of the same trade-off. Menard’s 2013 Richmond restart illustrates how old tires can leave a leader vulnerable. At Bristol in 2019, Logano’s stop for four tires cost him the lead when Busch stayed out. The Kansas report from 2026 shows that an old-tire car can lose control, while the Reddick playoff account shows fuel strategy may constrain a team’s options before a restart decision can be made.
Those are race examples, not a statistical estimate of which strategy succeeds more often. No general study or universal tire-falloff rate is established in the cited material, and there is no formula here for converting fresher tires into a fixed number of positions. The decision remains a forecast made with incomplete information: the team weighs grip, likely restart order, laps, fuel, the car and driver, and what other teams may do.
