For the Indian 1.5-litre diesel Kia Sonet, an Autocar India road test published in 2021 recorded 15.4 km/l in the city and 20.8 km/l on the highway with the manual, and 13.8 km/l in the city and 18.8 km/l on the highway with the automatic. These are results from specific test vehicles and routes, not guaranteed figures for every Sonet. The answer changes by market, fuel type, transmission and model year: “1.5-litre” alone does not identify one universal Sonet powertrain.
City and highway fuel use in the Indian diesel test
The clearest city-versus-highway figures available for a 1.5-litre Sonet come from Autocar India’s 2021 real-world test of the Indian diesel versions. The manual returned 15.4 km/l in the city and 20.8 km/l on the highway. The automatic returned 13.8 km/l in the city and 18.8 km/l on the highway. The transmission figures are separate test results; they should not be blended into one mileage number.

| Market and powertrain | City result | Highway result | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| India, 1.5 diesel manual | 15.4 km/l | 20.8 km/l | Autocar India real-world road test, 2021 |
| India, 1.5 diesel automatic | 13.8 km/l | 18.8 km/l | Autocar India real-world road test, 2021 |
In that test, both versions used less fuel per kilometre on the highway than in the city, as reflected by their higher km/l results. The manual recorded 1.6 km/l more than the automatic in the city and 2.0 km/l more on the highway. Those differences describe the tested vehicles; they do not establish what every owner will see or prove that the same gap applies to another model year or market.

For a quick sense of the scale, the city results mean roughly 6.5 litres per 100 km for the manual and 7.2 litres per 100 km for the automatic. On the highway, the same figures work out to about 4.8 and 5.3 litres per 100 km. These are reciprocal conversions of the reported mileage, rounded to one decimal place—not extra measurements from the test. The higher highway km/l figures therefore correspond to lower fuel use over the same distance.

What the published standard-test figures mean
Kia India’s 2020 launch release gave standard-test-condition figures of 24.1 km/l for the 1.5 diesel manual and 19.0 km/l for the 1.5 diesel automatic. These are not city and highway results, and their test basis differs from Autocar India’s road-test routes. They are best read as a separate standardized claim, not as a prediction that a driver should achieve either figure in city traffic or on a highway.
| India, 1.5 diesel | Published figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Manual | 24.1 km/l | Kia India launch release, 2020; standard test conditions |
| Automatic | 19.0 km/l | Kia India launch release, 2020; standard test conditions |
The manual’s 24.1 km/l standard-test figure is higher than its 2021 city and highway road-test results, while the automatic’s 19.0 km/l standard-test figure is close to, but not the same as, its highway result. That is not a like-for-like comparison: the figures come from different methods and answer different questions. A standardized figure and a route-based observation should not be ranked as though they were measurements taken under identical conditions.
It is especially important not to call the 24.1 or 19.0 km/l figures “city mileage” or “highway mileage.” The launch release identifies them as figures under standard test conditions, while Autocar India reports separate results for city and highway loops. The labels tell you what each number can reasonably answer: use the road-test pair when you need city and highway reference points, and keep the standardized claim in its own category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy “1.5-litre Kia Sonet” is not specific enough
The Sonet is sold in different markets with different powertrain line-ups. Kia India’s current specifications list engine choices ranging from 998 cc to 1493 cc, so the displacement label alone does not tell you the vehicle’s fuel type or transmission. The Indian test figures above apply specifically to the 1.5 diesel manual and automatic tested in India; they should not be applied automatically to a petrol Sonet or to a vehicle sold elsewhere.

A South African Kia Sonet 1.5 SX review illustrates the distinction. That review concerns a petrol model and reports a claimed combined consumption of 6.2 L/100 km. It says the test car showed 7.6 L/100 km combined after 10 days, and suggests that around 7 L/100 km might be possible with more measured driving. It does not provide separate city and highway figures, so none should be inferred from those combined numbers.
| Market and version | Consumption figure | Measurement type |
|---|---|---|
| South Africa, Sonet 1.5 SX petrol | 6.2 L/100 km | Kia South Africa claimed combined figure |
| South Africa, Sonet 1.5 SX petrol test unit | 7.6 L/100 km | Combined consumption reported after 10 days in the review |
| South Africa, same review | Around 7 L/100 km | Review’s suggested possibility with more measured driving, not a reported city/highway split |
The South African results use litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km), while the Indian diesel results use kilometres per litre (km/l). The units run in opposite directions: a higher km/l means less fuel used per distance, whereas a lower L/100 km means less fuel used per distance. For a rough unit comparison, divide 100 by the km/l figure to get L/100 km, or divide 100 by the L/100 km figure to get km/l. Do not compare a combined result with a city-only or highway-only result simply because the units have been converted.
For example, 6.2 L/100 km is equivalent to about 16.1 km/l, and 7.6 L/100 km to about 13.2 km/l. Those conversions make the units easier to read alongside the Indian results, but they do not make the vehicles or test conditions equivalent. Both South African figures are combined consumption, not city or highway data. The suggested around-7 L/100 km figure is likewise a combined estimate from the review, not a separately recorded route result.

How to use the numbers for your own estimate
Use the Indian road-test results as reference points if your car is the corresponding Indian 1.5 diesel and you want separate city and highway benchmarks. Choose the manual or automatic row that matches the car, then compare your own usage over similar kinds of driving. The results are not an individual guarantee: Autocar India’s test covered particular vehicles and routes, and mileage can vary with driving conditions, habits and vehicle condition.

- Confirm the exact version. Check the market, fuel type and transmission rather than relying on “1.5-litre” alone. A South African 1.5 SX petrol, for example, is not the same version as the Indian 1.5 diesel in Autocar India’s test.
- Match the type of figure. Use the city result to think about city driving and the highway result for highway driving. Keep combined consumption and standard-test-condition claims separate from route-specific real-world observations.
- Compare over a relevant drive. An owner’s mixed commute will not necessarily match either a city loop or a highway loop. Treat any difference as a result of the conditions and vehicle being compared, not as proof that one published figure is universally correct.
- Keep the units consistent. Convert km/l to L/100 km only when needed for comparison, using 100 divided by the km/l number. Label the converted value as a calculation from the original test figure, not as a separately published test result.
For a purely mathematical conversion of Autocar India’s 2021 figures, the manual results correspond to approximately 6.5 L/100 km in the city and 4.8 L/100 km on the highway; the automatic results correspond to approximately 7.2 L/100 km and 5.3 L/100 km, respectively. These rounded values are calculated from the published km/l results, not independently measured figures. Their purpose is only to make the units easier to compare.
If your driving is a mixture of city streets and open-road travel, neither published city nor highway figure is automatically the right single number for the whole trip. The two results are route-specific reference points. The evidence here does not establish a combined Indian real-world figure, so do not average the city and highway numbers and present that as a tested result. A useful comparison starts with the version and route type, then keeps the test basis visible.
What the road-test method does—and does not—establish
Autocar India’s test filled the tanks to the brim before and after fixed city and highway loops, maintained manufacturer-recommended tyre pressures, and used a reference car and driver swaps to control driver variation. That provides context for how the reported road-test measurements were obtained. It does not turn the outcomes into a guarantee for another Sonet, route or driver.
The test approach matters because fuel-use figures can be affected by how the route and vehicle are evaluated. Filling before and after the loops provides a basis for measuring fuel used over those test drives; maintaining the recommended tyre pressures and swapping drivers were controls used in the comparison. They help describe the test, but they do not mean every owner’s car will reproduce the same mileage. Autocar India’s current mileage information also cautions that real-world results vary with driving conditions, habits and vehicle condition.

Likewise, Kia India’s standard-test-condition figures are useful in their own context but should not be substituted for real-world city and highway estimates. The two sources report different kinds of evidence: one gives route-based observations, while the other publishes standard-test-condition figures. Keeping that distinction visible is more useful than choosing one figure and presenting it as the mileage every 1.5-litre Sonet should deliver.

If the question is about the Indian 1.5 diesel Sonet, use 15.4 km/l city and 20.8 km/l highway for the manual, or 13.8 km/l city and 18.8 km/l highway for the automatic, as the available 2021 real-world test references. Kia India’s separate 2020 standard-test figures were 24.1 km/l for the manual and 19.0 km/l for the automatic. If the car is a different market’s 1.5-litre Sonet, identify its fuel and transmission first: the South African 1.5 SX petrol example reports combined L/100 km figures, not city and highway mileage.

Why does Kia quote 24.1 km/l for the manual when the road test recorded less?
Kia India’s 24.1 km/l manual figure was published in its 2020 launch release under standard test conditions. Autocar India’s 2021 figures came from separate city and highway road-test loops, so the numbers use different test bases and should not be treated as directly comparable results.
Does the South African 1.5-litre Sonet have the same city and highway mileage?
The South African 1.5 SX review concerns a petrol model and reports combined consumption: 6.2 L/100 km claimed and 7.6 L/100 km observed after 10 days. It does not give city and highway splits, so it cannot supply those separate figures.
Can I use the Indian diesel figures for any Kia Sonet with a 1.5-litre engine?
No. Market, fuel type, transmission and model year matter. Kia India’s specifications include engines from 998 cc to 1493 cc, and the cited city/highway results apply specifically to the tested Indian 1.5 diesel manual and automatic.
