Norsepower reported two 30-metre (about 98-foot) Rotor Sails on the tanker and an aggregate fuel saving of 8.2% during a one-year trial from September 2018 to September 2019.
What was installed on the Maersk Pelican?
Norsepower and its project partners installed two 30-metre Rotor Sails on the Maersk Pelican, a Maersk Tankers LR2 product tanker. The 30-metre height is about 98 feet, not 130 feet. These figures come from Norsepower’s 2018 announcement: Norsepower’s installation announcement.
What fuel saving did the trial report?
Norsepower’s 2019 results release reported an aggregate fuel saving of 8.2% over the trial period, 1 September 2018 through 1 September 2019. The company also said the saving represented approximately 1,400 tonnes of CO₂. Those are the reported results for this vessel and trial period, not a guaranteed saving for other ships or routes. Norsepower said Lloyd’s Register’s Ship Performance Group analyzed and validated the performance data against a baseline established using full-scale measurements and computational analysis. The independent analysis report itself is not available in the cited material, so the validation details are attributable here to Norsepower’s account.

Why do the 9.8% and 130-foot figures differ?
The available primary project announcements support neither figure for the Maersk Pelican installation. They describe two 30-metre rotors and report 8.2% aggregate savings after the one-year trial. The original source for the 9.8% and 130-foot wording has not been established, so those figures should not be presented as confirmed facts about this ship.
There is a separate number that can cause confusion: at installation, Norsepower said savings of 7–10% were expected on typical global routes. That was an initial forecast, not the measured result later reported for the Maersk Pelican trial.

How do Rotor Sails help propel a ship?
A Rotor Sail is a tall cylinder that rotates in the wind. Its rotation creates a pressure difference through the Magnus effect, producing force that assists the ship’s forward motion. The system provides wind-assisted propulsion; it does not replace the ship’s engine. Norsepower describes the mechanism in its Rotor Sail technology overview.

The trial is a vessel-specific result, not evidence that every ship fitted with Rotor Sails will save 8.2% fuel. Performance depends on the vessel, route and wind conditions, as well as installation geometry and how the equipment is operated. A useful comparison between propulsion options needs like-for-like vessel and route data, and it should distinguish measured results from forecasts.

In the trial-results release, Maersk Tankers Chief Technical Officer Tommy Thomassen said crew and operators had reported positively on the Rotor Sails’ usability, safety and performance during the one-year trial. That statement reflects the company’s report of the trial, not a substitute for independently available performance data.
