Compare what each fuel costs to cover the same distance using local prices and the consumption figures for the specific cars. For a dated example, Spain’s government estimated fuel costs of €5.35 per 100 km for CNG and €9.82 for petrol 95 E5, a difference of €4.47 per 100 km. That is about 45.5% lower for CNG in that comparison—not a universal saving.
How to compare CNG and petrol running costs
Put both fuels on the same distance basis, such as cost per 100 km. A litre of petrol and a kilogram of CNG are different units, so comparing their pump prices directly can be misleading. The vehicles’ consumption matters as much as the price of each fuel.

Use these calculations:
- Petrol cost per 100 km: local petrol price per litre × petrol consumption in litres per 100 km.
- CNG cost per 100 km: local CNG price per kilogram × CNG consumption in kilograms per 100 km.
- Savings per 100 km: petrol cost per 100 km − CNG cost per 100 km.
- Percentage savings versus petrol: (savings per 100 km ÷ petrol cost per 100 km) × 100.
For a useful comparison, use prices from the same area and date, and consumption figures for comparable vehicles on the same kind of route. Worked example with your own figures
Suppose local petrol costs €1.70 per litre and a petrol car consumes 6.0 L/100 km. Its estimated fuel cost is €10.20 per 100 km. If CNG costs €1.40 per kg and a CNG car consumes 4.0 kg/100 km, its estimated cost is €5.60 per 100 km. The difference is €4.60 per 100 km, or about 45.1% less than the petrol car in this example. These figures are illustrative arithmetic, not a market price or a claim about a particular car.

The calculation is deliberately done in two stages: first convert each vehicle’s consumption into a cost for 100 km, then compare those costs. Do not try to convert a CNG kilogram into a petrol litre by treating the units as if they were interchangeable. If a source quotes CNG in a different unit, such as a gasoline-gallon-equivalent, preserve that unit and check what the figure represents before using it in a calculation.
What official examples show—and what they do not
Published figures demonstrate why location, date and unit matter. They are not interchangeable, and they cannot be averaged into one expected saving.

Spain’s figures are cost-per-distance estimates; the US figures compare fuel prices on an energy-equivalent basis; and Nigeria’s figure is a program claim. Keep each figure within its stated scope rather than treating any one of them as a universal CNG discount.

The percentage uses the petrol figure as its reference point; it does not mean every CNG car or driver will achieve that reduction.

Distance scaling can help make the official example more tangible, while keeping its limits clear. If someone drove 15,000 km at those same estimated costs throughout the year, the difference would be 150 × €4.47, or €670.50. That is an arithmetic illustration based on the ministry’s dated estimate, not a prediction of an individual’s annual bill. A different location, date, vehicle consumption or driving pattern changes the result.
How to get a realistic estimate for your car
- Choose the comparison distance. Cost per 100 km is convenient for comparing consumption. To estimate a monthly or annual bill, use your typical kilometres over that period as well.
- Find local prices for both fuels. Record the price per litre of the petrol grade you would use and the CNG price per kilogram. Note the location and date, because prices vary.
- Get consumption figures for both vehicles. Use each vehicle’s certified figures or measured consumption, clearly distinguishing test-cycle data from real-world records. Keep the route and driving pattern as comparable as possible.
- Calculate both costs per 100 km. Multiply each fuel’s unit price by that vehicle’s consumption in the matching unit.
- Calculate the difference and percentage. Subtract CNG cost from petrol cost for the amount saved per 100 km; divide that difference by the petrol cost for the percentage saving.
- Scale to your driving. Multiply the per-100-km cost or saving by your expected distance divided by 100. For example, a calculated saving of €4 per 100 km corresponds to €600 over 15,000 km, if prices and consumption remain the same.
Prefer consistent data over false precision
Certified consumption helps make comparisons repeatable, but it comes from defined test conditions. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency in India says standard fuel consumption is measured under standard conditions in nationally accredited laboratories; a driver’s actual result can differ. If you have reliable real-world consumption for both cars, you can use it instead, but compare like with like: similar routes, traffic, load and driving style. Do not compare one car’s laboratory figure with another car’s owner-reported result without labeling the difference.

For each vehicle, note whether the number is an official test-cycle figure or an owner-measured result. The European Alternative Fuels Observatory uses consumption from certificates of conformity in its cost-per-distance calculation, while real-world records describe a particular driver’s use. Neither kind of figure should be presented as the other. Standardized results make a repeatable comparison possible, but their test conditions are not a promise of what you will use on your own journeys.

A practical comparison sheet needs only a few inputs: the price and unit for each fuel, the relevant consumption figure and unit for each car, the date and location of the prices, and the distance you expect to drive. Check that price and consumption units match before multiplying. Then show the result in currency per 100 km and, if helpful, scale it to your expected annual distance. Keeping the inputs visible makes it easier to update the estimate when prices or your driving change.
Fuel savings are not the same as total ownership savings
A lower fuel bill does not, by itself, prove that a CNG vehicle is cheaper to own overall. A total-cost comparison also needs the relevant purchase premium or conversion outlay, annual distance, access to refuelling, and model- and location-specific maintenance costs. The available figures here do not establish a general total-cost result for those items, so calculate them separately rather than assuming fuel savings settle the decision.
For a payback estimate, first calculate the annual fuel savings from your own distance, prices and consumption. Then compare that amount with the actual additional purchase or conversion cost and any other relevant costs. A simple fuel-only payback period is the additional outlay divided by annual fuel savings; it is incomplete if it leaves out access, maintenance or other ownership costs.
For example, if your own calculation produces a positive annual fuel saving, divide the specific extra purchase or conversion outlay by that annual amount to estimate a fuel-only payback period. This calculation is useful only when the inputs describe your situation and the annual saving is expected to remain representative. If the fuel-cost difference is small, the payback period will be longer; if your annual distance is higher, the same per-kilometre saving adds up over more kilometres. No general conversion price, vehicle premium or maintenance figure is provided here to plug into this calculation, so use actual quotes and model-specific information rather than a generic estimate.

Refuelling access belongs in this decision even though it is not part of the cost-per-100-km formula. A low calculated fuel cost may not answer whether the arrangement suits a particular driver’s routes. Consider the access available where you actually travel and obtain local information before treating the fuel calculation as a complete ownership comparison.

- Comparing pump prices alone: a kilogram of CNG is not a litre of petrol. Use consumption to convert prices into cost per distance.
- Using figures from different markets or dates: the Spanish, US and Nigerian examples have different scopes and units. They do not predict your local result.
- Treating a test figure as a promise: standardized consumption is measured under specific conditions; real-world use can differ.
- Calling an initiative’s maximum a typical saving: “up to 60%” is the Nigeria initiative’s claim, not a universal outcome.
- Ignoring annual mileage and upfront cost: a per-kilometre saving does not show how quickly an added purchase or conversion expense could be recovered.
What information would make the estimate more precise?
There is no single exact answer without the driver’s country or city and the specific vehicle pair. For a personalized comparison, gather the current local prices for the petrol grade and CNG, plus the certified or measured consumption of the petrol car and the CNG car. If the question is whether a conversion makes financial sense, also obtain the actual conversion outlay and relevant local information about refuelling access and maintenance. The same calculation can then be repeated with the driver’s expected annual distance.
Keep each assumption with the result. A useful estimate says, for example, which market and date the prices refer to, whether consumption is certified or owner-measured, and whether the result covers fuel alone or other ownership costs. Without those details, a precise-looking figure can create more confidence than the evidence supports.

Will my car still use petrol after conversion?

No. It compares fuel only. A total-ownership comparison also needs the relevant purchase premium or conversion cost, annual distance, refuelling access and model- and location-specific maintenance costs.

To compare CNG with petrol, calculate each vehicle’s fuel cost for the same distance using local prices and the vehicle’s matching consumption figure.
