Published U.S. five-year ownership estimates for a Ford Mustang EcoBoost range from $45,961 to $70,830 for the 2025 model, depending on the publisher’s estimate and assumptions. Edmunds also estimates $47,528 for a 2026 Mustang Coupe EcoBoost. These are modeled totals, not bills every owner will pay; your purchase price, financing, location, mileage and insurance quote can change your budget substantially.

What published five-year estimates say

Two current estimates for the 2025 EcoBoost differ by $24,869. That gap is too large to treat either figure as the definitive cost of owning the car. The estimates use different component values, and the available information does not establish a fully comparable set of assumptions that explains the difference.

Source and vehicle Five-year estimate Categories or breakdown reported
Kelley Blue Book, 2025 Mustang EcoBoost $70,830 Depreciation $19,891; out-of-pocket costs $50,939, including fuel $13,483, insurance $18,345, financing $4,236, state fees $5,198, maintenance $7,805 and repairs $1,872.
Edmunds, 2025 Mustang Coupe EcoBoost, 2.3L turbo, 10-speed automatic $45,961 Depreciation $13,543; taxes and fees $2,207; financing $6,913; fuel $14,123; insurance $4,435; repairs $825; maintenance $3,915.
Edmunds, 2026 Mustang Coupe EcoBoost, 2.3L turbo, 10-speed automatic $47,528 Depreciation $12,196; taxes and fees $5,040; financing $7,616; fuel $12,652; insurance $5,212; repairs $839; maintenance $3,973.

Kelley Blue Book describes its cost-to-own total as out-of-pocket expenses, such as fuel, insurance, service and financing, plus depreciation. Edmunds itemizes seven categories. The publishers’ different totals are therefore not simply two versions of the same owner’s receipts.

The category breakdowns are as important as the headline totals. Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 estimate assigns $50,939 to out-of-pocket costs and $19,891 to depreciation. Edmunds’ 2025 breakdown separately lists depreciation, taxes and fees, financing, fuel, insurance, repairs and maintenance. The category labels are useful for seeing which kinds of expenses a publisher has counted, but they do not prove that the publishers used identical inputs for each category.

What the totals look like when spread over time

Dividing each five-year estimate by 60 gives a simple monthly equivalent: about $1,181 for Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 figure, $766 for Edmunds’ 2025 figure and $792 for Edmunds’ 2026 figure. Dividing by five gives annual equivalents of $14,166, $9,192 and $9,506, respectively. These are arithmetic averages of the published totals, not quoted monthly payments or a prediction of when costs will occur. A down payment, insurance bill, fuel purchase, repair or depreciation does not necessarily arrive evenly each month.

That distinction matters when planning cash flow. A monthly average can help compare the scale of two estimates, but it is not the same thing as the car payment. Some expenses recur, some depend on use, and some are modeled changes in vehicle value rather than cash paid in a particular month. Keep the financing payment and recurring bills visible in your household budget, and use the five-year figure as a broader ownership-cost comparison.

Why one owner’s cost can differ from another’s

Insurance is personal

The 2025 estimates show how much an insurance input can affect a modeled total: Kelley Blue Book lists $18,345 over five years, while Edmunds lists $4,435. Those figures are not interchangeable quotes for the same driver and policy. Insurance depends on the actual driver, location, selected coverage and insured vehicle. Before relying on an ownership estimate, request a quote for the specific Mustang and intended policy, using the relevant ZIP code and driver details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, the five-year insurance difference between those two estimates is $13,910. That is a reason to get a real quote early in the buying process rather than assuming a generic national estimate will apply. If you compare insurance costs, keep the vehicle, driver information, location and intended coverage consistent; otherwise, the results may reflect different policy inputs rather than a meaningful comparison of ownership costs.

Fuel depends on how and where you drive

The 2025 estimates put five-year fuel spending at $13,483 from Kelley Blue Book and $14,123 from Edmunds; Edmunds lists $12,652 for its 2026 estimate. The available figures do not specify a common mileage and fuel-price basis that would make these totals directly comparable. Your own annual miles and local fuel assumptions matter. Use the same expected mileage and fuel price when comparing estimates or building a household budget, rather than treating a published fuel figure as a promise.

As simple five-year averages, those fuel amounts work out to about $2,697 a year for Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 estimate, $2,825 a year for Edmunds’ 2025 estimate and $2,530 a year for Edmunds’ 2026 estimate. They are not fuel-economy ratings and do not tell you how many miles per gallon a particular Mustang will achieve. The estimates available here do not provide a verified model-specific mpg figure. To build your own fuel budget, use an appropriate fuel-economy figure for the exact model year and configuration, along with your expected annual mileage and local fuel price.

Purchase, financing and local charges matter

Depreciation, financing and taxes or fees are distinct parts of the cost. The 2025 Edmunds estimate lists $13,543 for depreciation, $6,913 for financing and $2,207 for taxes and fees; its 2026 estimate lists $12,196, $7,616 and $5,040 for those categories. Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 estimate reports $19,891 in depreciation, $4,236 in financing and $5,198 in state fees. These differences underline why an estimate based on a particular model year or configuration should not be read as a quote for your transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your negotiated purchase price, down payment, loan amount, interest rate, term and local taxes or fees shape what you pay. If you are comparing a new purchase with a different deal or model year, use the relevant transaction details rather than assuming a national estimate captures them.

It also helps to distinguish what is paid from what is estimated. Financing is a borrowing cost; depreciation is an estimate of lost vehicle value over the ownership period. Taxes and fees depend in part on location and transaction details. A cost-to-own total can combine these different kinds of costs, so it should not be read as the amount of cash you must have available at purchase or as a monthly loan-payment estimate.

Maintenance and repairs are separate budget lines

All three estimates distinguish maintenance from repairs. Edmunds lists $3,915 in maintenance and $825 in repairs for the 2025 configuration, and $3,973 and $839 for the 2026 configuration. Kelley Blue Book lists $7,805 in maintenance and $1,872 in repairs for its 2025 estimate. These are modeled allowances, not a service schedule, warranty statement or guarantee of future repair bills. Keeping the categories separate helps you see what a source has counted and avoids assuming that a maintenance allowance also covers unexpected repairs.

For a rough sense of scale, the maintenance totals average about $783 a year in Edmunds’ 2025 estimate, $795 a year in its 2026 estimate and $1,561 a year in Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 estimate. The repair figures average about $165, $168 and $374 a year, respectively. These averages simply divide each listed five-year amount by five; they do not predict a particular service visit or repair. Neither estimate should be treated as a maintenance calendar. Check the owner’s manual for the correct model year and configuration for required service details rather than assuming an interval, oil specification or capacity from a general cost estimate.

How to build a cost estimate for your own Mustang

Use a published total as a comparison point, then replace assumptions you can verify with your own numbers. A useful estimate should match the model year and configuration you are considering and reflect your location and ownership plans.

  1. Identify the exact vehicle. Record the model year, EcoBoost trim and configuration. The Edmunds figures above are specifically for a Mustang Coupe EcoBoost with a 2.3L turbo and 10-speed automatic; do not automatically apply them to a different configuration.
  2. Use your likely transaction price. Start with the price you expect to pay, not an unrelated example’s purchase assumptions. Include the taxes and fees relevant to your location and deal.
  3. Enter your financing terms. Use the amount borrowed, interest rate and loan term you actually expect. Keep financing separate from depreciation: one is a cost of borrowing, while the other is estimated loss in vehicle value.
  4. Get an insurance quote. Request a quote for the exact vehicle and intended coverage with your driver and location details. Replace a broad modeled insurance allowance with that quote when planning your budget.
  5. Estimate fuel from your driving. Choose your expected annual mileage and a local fuel-price assumption. Apply the same inputs when comparing estimates so the difference is not driven by inconsistent assumptions.
  6. Keep maintenance and repairs distinct. Use the estimates as reference allowances, not as a prediction of service dates or repair events. Do not add unsupported oil specifications, maintenance intervals or repair forecasts to a calculation.
  7. Compare on one time basis. Sum the costs over the same ownership period. If you want a monthly planning equivalent, divide a five-year total by 60, but keep the annual and irregular bills visible so the average does not conceal cash-flow needs.

A simple worksheet can keep the estimate understandable: enter the purchase and local fee assumptions; add financing; estimate depreciation separately; then add fuel, insurance, maintenance and repairs. Keep the same five-year horizon for each number. If you have an actual insurance quote or a likely transaction price, use it in place of a generic assumption. Mark any figures you cannot verify as estimates instead of treating them as fixed costs.

How to compare Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds fairly

Before deciding that one estimate is more useful, align the inputs rather than comparing only the headline number. The published figures establish category totals but do not establish a fully matched set of assumptions behind the two 2025 estimates.

  • Model year and configuration: compare the same year and EcoBoost configuration, not just vehicles that share the Mustang name.
  • Geography and taxes: check whether the local taxes, state fees and other charges fit your location.
  • Mileage and fuel: use the same expected annual miles and fuel-price assumptions.
  • Financing: compare the same loan amount, rate and term, or note that the assumptions are not aligned.
  • Insurance: treat a publisher’s number as a model input; use a quote for your own driver, location, coverage and vehicle to plan your actual budget.
  • Included categories: confirm whether depreciation, financing, fuel, insurance, taxes or fees, maintenance and repairs are included before comparing totals.

If a source does not disclose a matching assumption, the responsible comparison is to note that the input is not established—not to infer that the difference is caused by one category. The $24,869 gap between the two 2025 totals illustrates why this check matters.

For example, the two publishers’ insurance totals differ by $13,910, while their fuel totals differ by $640. Those figures show a contrast in reported category values, not proof that insurance alone explains the overall $24,869 gap. Depreciation, financing, fees, maintenance and repairs also have different reported amounts, and the estimates do not provide enough matched assumptions to attribute the total difference to a single cause.

What the estimates can—and cannot—tell you

A five-year cost-to-own estimate is useful for framing the full cost beyond the sticker price. It can remind a buyer to account for depreciation and financing alongside fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs and fees. It can also help compare estimates when the vehicle, location and assumptions are aligned.

It cannot tell you the exact amount your household will spend. The figures are publisher-specific modeled estimates, not observed costs for every owner. The listed category amounts are not a guarantee of future fuel bills, insurance premiums, maintenance needs, repair costs or resale value. For a purchase decision, treat the published total as a benchmark, then build a local estimate from your own transaction and ownership assumptions.

What is the fuel economy of a Mustang EcoBoost?

The estimates summarized here provide fuel-cost totals, not a verified mpg rating for a specific model year and configuration. Check a model-specific fuel-economy source before using an mpg figure, then combine it with your expected mileage and local fuel price.

Why do Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds give different ownership costs?

Their 2025 totals differ by $24,869, and their reported category amounts also differ. The available details do not establish a fully comparable set of assumptions that explains the gap. Align the vehicle, location, mileage, fuel, financing, insurance and included categories before comparing estimates.

The Bottom Line

Published five-year Mustang EcoBoost estimates are useful benchmarks, not a universal ownership price: 2025 figures range from $45,961 at Edmunds to $70,830 at Kelley Blue Book. Match the model year and configuration, then replace generic assumptions with your transaction details, local charges, mileage, fuel costs and an insurance quote. Keep depreciation, financing, maintenance and repairs in view, and treat averages as planning aids rather than promised bills.
