Add the electricity cost for miles driven on battery power to the gasoline cost for miles driven using fuel. Your result depends on the vehicle’s energy use, how often you charge, your driving pattern, and local electricity and gasoline prices.
How to calculate EREV driving costs
Use the vehicle’s EPA label or fuel-economy record, along with your own energy prices and driving pattern. EPA reports plug-in hybrid electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours per 100 miles and gasoline consumption in gallons per 100 miles—separate inputs for the two parts of the calculation. EPA plug-in hybrid label guidance
- Calculate electricity. Multiply electric miles by the vehicle’s electricity use per mile and your price per kilowatt-hour. If the rating is in kWh per 100 miles, divide it by 100 first.
Electricity cost = electric miles × (kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100) × electricity price per kWh. - Calculate gasoline. Multiply fuel-powered miles by the vehicle’s gasoline use per mile and your price per gallon. If the rating is in gallons per 100 miles, divide it by 100 first.
Gasoline cost = fuel-powered miles × (gallons per 100 miles ÷ 100) × gasoline price per gallon. - Add the two amounts. Total energy cost = electricity cost + gasoline cost.
- Find cost per mile, if useful. Divide the total energy cost for the trip or period by the total miles driven over that same trip or period.
For a practical estimate, use electricity consumption that reflects the amount drawn to charge, rather than treating a gasoline-equivalent measure as a household electricity bill. EPA’s MPGe method accounts for charging losses under its stated Level 2 AC assumption. EPA explains that MPGe compares a vehicle’s energy use with the energy in a gallon of gasoline; one gallon is equivalent to 33.7 kWh. Its example of 33.7 kWh used over 100 miles equaling 100 MPGe illustrates the conversion—it is not a current EREV rating or a cost estimate. EPA Fuel Economy and EV Range Testing
Worked example: plug in your own figures
Suppose your vehicle’s label lists E kWh per 100 miles and G gallons per 100 miles. If you drive M electric miles and N gasoline miles, and your local rates are P dollars per kWh and Q dollars per gallon, the estimate is:

- Electricity: M × (E ÷ 100) × P
- Gasoline: N × (G ÷ 100) × Q
- Total: [M × (E ÷ 100) × P] + [N × (G ÷ 100) × Q]
Use your actual rates and a realistic estimate of electric and gasoline miles; without those inputs and a specific vehicle, there is no defensible universal dollar figure.
Why the cost varies from driver to driver
The electric share of your miles is a major factor. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center says plug-in hybrid fuel consumption depends on how far the vehicle is driven between charges. If it is never plugged in, its fuel economy will be about that of a similarly sized hybrid. DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center: Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Charging frequently can increase the portion of driving covered by electricity, while longer stretches between charges mean more driving on fuel. Prices at home or at public charging locations, gasoline prices, speed, driving style, weather, air conditioning and other accessories, road conditions, maintenance, and vehicle load can all affect actual results. EPA cautions that label estimates are not guarantees and encourages drivers to personalize estimates using local prices and driving habits. EPA fuel economy label information
Check how the specific vehicle uses electricity and gasoline
Do not assume every EREV switches from electric power to gasoline at the same point. EPA describes plug-in hybrids that primarily use electricity until the battery is nearly depleted, as well as vehicles that blend gasoline and electricity while charge remains. The vehicle’s operating strategy affects which consumption figures apply to a given trip. EPA plug-in hybrid label guidance

What an EPA estimate can—and cannot—tell you
EPA label figures and annual cost estimates are useful starting points, but they rely on assumptions such as annual mileage and projected energy prices. The label guidance gives consumers a way to adjust estimates for their own location and habits. For context, EPA label materials use 15,000 miles per year as an annual fuel-cost assumption and show $0.12 per kWh in an interactive label example. Those are label examples, not current universal rates or a prediction of your bill. EPA fuel economy label information
Likewise, a vehicle’s rating is not a promise of real-world consumption. Weather, road conditions, load, maintenance, driving behavior, and accessories can change results. For the best estimate, start with the particular model year’s rating and substitute your local energy prices and expected usage.

How to compare EREVs on running cost
When comparing two vehicles—or an EREV with another type of vehicle—compare the inputs that determine your own energy bill, not just one headline metric.
- Electricity use in kWh per 100 miles and gasoline use in gallons per 100 miles.
- All-electric range and the share of your regular driving likely to be electric.
- Your local electricity and gasoline prices.
- Whether you can charge regularly and the typical time between charges.
- Annual mileage and the conditions in which you drive.
EPA provides separate electricity and gasoline consumption information for plug-in hybrids, along with an estimated annual fuel cost based on its assumptions. Use those figures to compare vehicles, then recalculate with your own circumstances. EPA plug-in hybrid label guidance

Does a home charger change the cost?
Charging equipment does not change the basic arithmetic of electricity plus gasoline, but it can affect charging convenience and time. EPA says most EVs can use a standard 120-volt outlet; a dedicated 240-volt outlet or charging system can charge more quickly. A charging station is a separate equipment expense, and installation or electrical work can add to ownership costs. Confirm compatibility with the vehicle and the home’s electrical setup before buying equipment. EPA Fuel Economy and EV Range Testing
