There is no single price to charge an electric car: at home, you pay your electricity rate for the energy the car uses; on the road, the station’s tariff and any extra fees apply. As a U.S. benchmark, the average residential electricity price was 17.30¢ per kWh in 2025. A government-hosted report gives older approximate averages of 20–25¢/kWh for public Level 2 charging and 40–60¢/kWh for public DC fast charging. Your actual cost depends on how much energy you add, your vehicle’s efficiency and the rate at your home or chosen station.
How much does an EV charge cost?
Calculate the electricity portion of a session as:
Cost = energy added (kWh) × price per kWh
For example, adding 30 kWh at 17.30¢/kWh would cost about $5.19 before any applicable taxes or other charges. That is an illustration using the 2025 U.S. residential average, not a quote for a particular utility or public station. A session does not have to fill the battery: the amount you pay depends on how many kWh you add.
Public charging may be priced by energy, time, session, or subscription, and a station may also charge service or parking fees. Add those charges to the energy cost when estimating a particular stop.
What are the typical home and public charging rates?
| Charging setting | Rate to use as a comparison | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Home electricity | 17.30¢/kWh | U.S. average residential retail price in 2025, reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. It is a national benchmark, not every household’s rate. |
| Public AC Level 2 | About $0.20–$0.25/kWh | Approximate U.S. average in a 2024 DOE-hosted report drawing on EIA 2024 rates and AFDC public charging data from 2023; not a live station tariff. DOE-hosted report. |
| Public DC fast charging | About $0.40–$0.60/kWh | Approximate U.S. average in the same 2024 DOE-hosted report, not a current quote for a specific network or location. DOE-hosted report. |
The public figures are directional context, not a like-for-like tariff survey: home rates and public network prices are formed differently, and the report’s public estimates use earlier source years. The report concerns medium- and heavy-duty charging infrastructure, so its figures should not be treated as precise light-duty consumer prices. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center also notes that drivers can generally expect public charging—especially DC fast charging—to cost more than home electricity.

State electricity averages are not a substitute for a household tariff either. EIA’s 2025 annual average retail prices across states ranged from 8.20¢/kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢/kWh in Hawaii, for all customer types rather than residential customers alone. Check your own bill or utility rate schedule for a useful home estimate.
How do you estimate your own cost per charge and per mile?
Estimate the cost of a home charging session
- Find the electricity rate that applies when you charge on your utility bill or tariff. If you have a time-of-use plan, use the rate for the charging hours; do not assume an overnight discount is available.
- Estimate the energy added in kWh. For a rough estimate, compare the battery’s state of charge before and after charging, or use the vehicle or charger’s session information where available.
- Multiply the kWh added by the applicable rate. Include any separate charges that appear on your bill if you are calculating the full household cost.
The DOE’s home-charging guidance illustrates why a “full charge” figure is only one example: a 200-mile-range EV with a fully depleted 54 kWh battery would cost about $6 to fill at 10.7¢/kWh. That rate and battery example are illustrative, not a current national price or a typical session.

Estimate a public charging stop
- Check the specific charger’s current price in the network’s app, on the station display, or through other station information before plugging in.
- Confirm whether the price is per kWh, minute, session, or subscription, and look for idle, service, or parking fees.
- Multiply the energy delivered by the applicable energy rate, then add any time-based or fixed charges. If the station uses a time-based price, the total also depends on how long the vehicle is connected.
Public stations do not share one billing model. As the DOE explains, “Most stations are operated by a charging network provider, such as Blink or Electrify America, and each has its own model for collecting money for charging (e.g., per session, hourly, or by the amount of energy used).” A free station may exist, but free charging is not a safe assumption when planning a trip.

Why does road charging often cost more?
Home charging is billed through the household’s electricity service. Public charging has its own network tariff and can include station, service, or parking charges. DC fast charging is also typically a more expensive public option than slower AC charging; the approximate public averages above show the scale of the difference, but a local station’s posted terms determine what you will pay.
Memberships can affect a network’s price, so compare the terms that apply to your account with the station’s non-member price if you charge on the road often. No single membership price or saving applies across networks.

Does a home charger add to the cost?
Separate the recurring electricity cost from one-time equipment and installation expenses. A Level 2 home charger is optional: Level 1 can use a vehicle cordset and a suitable 120-volt outlet, while Level 2 uses 240-volt equipment and may require electrical work.

DOE AFDC consumer guidance puts typical Level 2 equipment at $500–$4,000 before installation and incentives. That is an equipment-only range, not a complete installed price or a per-charge cost. Installation, permits, electrical-panel or service upgrades, and local conditions can affect the total.
DOE describes Level 1 as generally adding 2–5 miles of range per hour, Level 2 as 10–30 miles per hour, and DC fast charging as 100–200+ miles in 30 minutes. These are broad guide figures; actual charging speed depends on the vehicle, equipment, and conditions. A Level 2 unit may make home charging faster, but it does not change the price of electricity per kWh by itself.
Before buying or installing equipment, check the vehicle maker’s instructions, your home’s electrical capacity, local permitting requirements, and product safety certification. DOE recommends equipment certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory and highly recommends ENERGY STAR-rated equipment. Do not assume every home needs Level 2 or that installation is a DIY job.

What should you check before using a public fast charger?
A charger’s rated power is expressed in kilowatts (kW); the energy delivered or stored is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). A station with a higher kW rating cannot make a car charge faster than the vehicle’s own maximum charging capability.
- Check that the connector is compatible with your vehicle. The EPA’s plug-in electric vehicle guidance identifies CHAdeMO, CCS, and NACS fast-charging connectors.
- Check the vehicle’s charging capability as well as the station’s rated power; the car may accept less power than the station can provide.
- Review the current tariff and any account, session, time, or parking charges before starting.
Which figures are examples rather than current prices?
Some official examples are useful for understanding the math, but they should not be mistaken for today’s typical bill. DOE AFDC’s consumer guidance gives an example of $2.46 per 100 miles using electricity at 12.3¢/kWh. A separate DOE illustration gives $6 to charge a 200-mile-range EV from empty under the specified 54 kWh battery and 10.7¢/kWh assumptions. Both are examples, not universal rates or a guaranteed cost for a particular car.
A DOE estimate from 2020 put a weighted average at 15¢/kWh, with a range of 8–27¢/kWh, based on an assumed charging mix of 81% home, 14% workplace or public station, and 5% DC fast charging. It is historical and should not replace the newer EIA residential benchmark or a local tariff.
