There is no single price to charge a Toyota Prius Prime: the estimate changes with model year and your electricity rate. Using EPA/ENERGY STAR consumption and electric-range ratings, a 2023 or 2024 Prius Prime works out to about $1.50 for a range-equivalent charge at the EPA label’s illustrative rate of $0.12 per kWh. That is a rating-based estimate—not a measured wall-meter cost for a full recharge.

How to estimate the electricity cost

Use the vehicle’s electricity-consumption rating, its electric range, and the price you pay per kilowatt-hour:

Estimated cost = consumption (kWh/100 miles) × electric range (miles) ÷ 100 × electricity price ($/kWh)

The EPA reports plug-in hybrid electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours per 100 miles, a figure that can be used to estimate electric driving costs. For your own calculation, use the per-kWh energy price on your bill and include any delivery charges that vary with electricity use. The EPA’s $0.12/kWh figure is an example input, not a universal or current local rate. See the EPA explanation of the plug-in hybrid label.

Example: 2024 Prius Prime SE

The U.S. EPA/ENERGY STAR listing for the 2024 Toyota Prius Prime SE gives a rating of 26 kWh/100 miles and 48 miles of electric range. Using the EPA label’s illustrative electricity price:

  1. 26 kWh/100 miles × 48 miles ÷ 100 = 12.48 kWh.
  2. 12.48 kWh × $0.12/kWh = $1.4976, or about $1.50.

At that same illustrative rate, the rating-based electricity cost is about 3.1 cents per mile. The figure is an estimate for energy corresponding to the listed electric range, not a direct measurement of electricity drawn from an outlet to recharge a depleted battery. The 2024 EPA/ENERGY STAR listing also estimates four hours to charge at 240 volts; that is elapsed charging time, not a price.

How the 2023 model compares

The U.S. EPA/ENERGY STAR listing for the 2023 Prius Prime gives 29 kWh/100 miles and 43 miles of electric range. Applying the same method and illustrative $0.12/kWh rate:

  1. 29 kWh/100 miles × 43 miles ÷ 100 = 12.47 kWh.
  2. 12.47 kWh × $0.12/kWh = $1.4964, or about $1.50.

That works out to about 3.5 cents per mile at the example rate. The similar range-equivalent totals for these two model years result from multiplying each year’s separate consumption rating by its separate electric-range rating; they do not establish one universal recharge cost. See the 2023 EPA/ENERGY STAR listing.

What the estimate does—and does not—measure

Multiplying a rated kWh/100-mile figure by rated electric range produces a useful, standardized estimate of energy associated with that range. It is not the same as measuring electricity at the wall during a recharge. The available figures do not establish a standardized wall-energy draw for every Prius Prime model year or charging situation.

Your actual bill depends on your electricity tariff and charging circumstances. The battery’s starting charge, charging losses, and other conditions mean battery capacity alone cannot establish the cost of a recharge. For a current model, Toyota’s 2025 press material lists a 13.6 kWh lithium-ion battery and a manufacturer-estimated 44-mile electric range for the SE, but those figures alone are not enough to calculate a comparable EPA-based cost per range cycle. Toyota’s figures are in its 2025 Prius Plug-in Hybrid press material.

Charging time and home equipment

Charging time and electricity cost answer different questions. The 2024 SE’s EPA-listed four-hour estimate is for charging at 240 volts. EPA says charging time can vary with battery depletion, storage capacity, battery type, and temperature. Its overview of plug-in vehicle charging basics also notes that additional equipment may be needed for Level 2 charging.

Toyota says the 2025 Prius Plug-in Hybrid can charge from a standard household outlet using the cable supplied with the vehicle, and recommends a dedicated GFI 15A outlet. A Level 2 setup is an optional faster home-charging route; a new Level 2 charger is not required for basic household-outlet charging. See Toyota’s 2025 Prius Plug-in Hybrid information.
