Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko put the damage to Sergio Perez’s car at “two or three million” after the opening-lap crash at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. He called it a “big handicap” under the budget-cap rules. Marko’s quoted estimate did not specify a currency, and it was not a confirmed repair invoice.
What did Marko say the damage cost?
Sky Sport Italia reported on May 28, 2024, that Marko told Sky Deutschland the damage to Perez’s car was “two or three million.” In the same remark, Marko described the cost as a major handicap for Red Bull under the budget-limit regulations. Sky Sport Italia’s report does not state a currency in the quoted figure.
Motorsport Week rendered Marko’s estimate in English as “about two to three million.” That is consistent with the reported estimate, not a separate confirmed repair total. Motorsport Week also quoted team principal Christian Horner saying Red Bull did not yet know the extent of the engine and chassis damage, but that the accident was costly.
Was that the final repair bill?
No final invoice or independently confirmed repair amount appears in the cited reports. The “two or three million” figure should therefore be treated as Marko’s estimate, not as a settled accounting total. The quotation itself leaves the currency unspecified.

The Independent used “north of £2m” in its headline, but that pound-denominated wording is the publication’s rendering; Marko’s quoted statement says “two or three million.” It should not be read as proof that Marko explicitly named pounds. The Independent’s report preserves that distinction between its headline and the quoted wording.
How did the Monaco crash happen?
The collision occurred on the opening lap of the May 26, 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. Formula 1’s account says Kevin Magnussen’s Haas struck Perez’s Red Bull RB20 from behind, sending Perez into Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas. All three drivers retired. The stewards did not investigate the incident further. Formula 1’s collision report includes the drivers’ differing accounts.

Perez said his car was completely destroyed and that he was okay apart from a small graze to his elbow. Formula 1’s race-day report also quoted Magnussen noting the cost of spare parts, replacement parts and the work required after a crash.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What did the estimate mean for Red Bull’s budget cap?
Marko said the damage was a handicap under the budget-cap rules, but the cited reports do not quantify any specific development spending Red Bull had to forgo. They establish his concern about the cost’s effect on the team’s budget-cap position, not a measured reduction to a particular upgrade or program.
