There was no single 2025 savings figure for every U.S. driver. An EV’s driving-energy cost could be lower than a gas car’s, but the difference depended on local electricity and gasoline prices, both vehicles’ efficiency, annual miles, and how much the EV was charged at home versus at public stations. To estimate your savings, compare cost per mile for similar vehicles using your own rates; that measures energy to drive, not total cost of ownership.
Why there is no universal 2025 savings amount
In 2025, U.S. regular gasoline averaged $3.10 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2026 report on 2025 prices. Regional annual averages ranged from $2.39 per gallon on the Gulf Coast to $4.32 on the West Coast. Electricity prices varied too: EIA reports 2025 annual average retail prices across customer classes of 8.20 cents per kWh in North Dakota and 35.72 cents in Hawaii. Those figures establish how much location can matter; they are not necessarily the rates a particular driver paid at home.
For a practical estimate, compare the cost of energy per mile for the actual vehicles and location. A gallon and a kilowatt-hour are different units, so their prices alone do not establish which vehicle costs less to drive. The EV’s kWh per mile and the gas car’s miles per gallon are essential inputs.
How to calculate your cost per mile and annual savings
Use the same local prices and annual distance for both vehicles. For an apples-to-apples comparison, choose vehicles of similar size and use their actual efficiency figures.

- Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.
| Vehicle | Cost per mile | Annual energy cost |
|---|---|---|
| Gas car | Local gas price per gallon ÷ the car’s miles per gallon | Cost per mile × annual miles driven |
| EV | Electricity price per kWh × the EV’s kWh per mile | Cost per mile × annual miles driven |
Subtract the EV’s annual electricity cost from the gas car’s annual fuel cost to estimate how much cheaper the EV is to drive on energy alone. If the result is negative, the EV costs more for energy under the assumptions you used.
Account for home and public charging separately
If you charge at both home and public stations, calculate the home-charged and public-charged portions using the corresponding prices, then add them. Don’t use a residential utility rate for public charging. For instance, if you know the share of your annual charging done at each rate, apply each rate to that share of the EV’s energy use. Check your actual utility bill and the public station’s price before relying on the estimate.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Use a location-based calculator when you need a starting point
Argonne National Laboratory’s Fuel Cost Comparison Calculator lets drivers compare vehicle options by ZIP code and vehicle size, including gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric vehicles. Its Read Me identifies 2025 vehicle and electricity data inputs. Treat its result as an estimate based on the calculator’s inputs and assumptions, not a guaranteed bill or a universal national savings amount. If you know your exact vehicles and rates, use those in the calculation instead.
What 2025 price figures can—and cannot—tell you
National and regional averages help explain why the answer differs by driver, but they cannot produce one reliable EV-versus-gas number on their own. The EIA gasoline figures are annual averages; its electricity range spans customer classes, rather than describing every EV owner’s home rate.

AAA used different assumptions in its 2025 Your Driving Costs analysis: $3.151 per gallon for regular gasoline and 16.7 cents per kWh for EV charging. These are AAA’s analysis inputs, not universal local prices or a same-vehicle comparison. They can be useful for understanding one methodology, but substituting them for your own rates may not reflect your costs.

The calculation above compares gasoline with electricity only. It does not include purchase price, financing, depreciation, insurance, charger equipment or installation, or maintenance. AAA’s 2025 vehicle-cost analysis treats ownership as a broader calculation and identifies depreciation as the largest vehicle ownership cost. A lower energy bill therefore does not, by itself, prove that an EV will cost less to own overall.

Maintenance is a separate consideration. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center lists average maintenance costs of $0.061 per mile for all-electric vehicles and $0.101 per mile for gasoline vehicles. These are AFDC averages, not a promise for a specific model or a vehicle-specific 2025 result. Keep them separate from the energy estimate rather than presenting them as additional fuel savings.
If you are planning to charge at home
A Level 2 home charger is optional; the energy-cost comparison does not require buying one. If you are considering equipment, the DOE’s Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure guidance says charging equipment should be certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory and recommends ENERGY STAR-rated products. Before buying or arranging installation, check vehicle compatibility, your electrical service, the proposed location, local utility rates, and local permit requirements. Permitting authorities may require permits, and contractors should know applicable codes and standards.
What to gather for a useful estimate
- Your local price per gallon for the grade of gasoline you use.
- The gas car’s real-world or published miles per gallon and the EV’s energy use in kWh per mile.
- Your expected annual driving distance.
- Your home electricity rate and the price and share of any public charging.
- Vehicles in a similar size class, unless you are intentionally comparing different types.
- A clear boundary: energy cost per mile, annual energy spending, or broader ownership cost.
With those inputs, the comparison answers the practical question for your circumstances. The EIA’s 2025 averages provide context, while your local rates and vehicle efficiencies determine your own result.
