The 2026 Honda Passport borrows the rugged-SUV look and trail-ready equipment associated with vehicles such as the Ford Bronco, especially in TrailSport trim. But the resemblance is about styling and positioning, not a shared design: the Passport is a two-row AWD SUV built for everyday driving and moderate off-road use, while the Bronco offers 4WD and removable roof configurations for more specialized trail use.
What makes the 2026 Passport look more like a trail SUV?
Honda offers the 2026 Passport in RTL, TrailSport and TrailSport Elite trims. TrailSport is the trail-focused choice, pairing a boxier, more rugged presentation with equipment intended to help on dirt and sand. The package is a practical nod to the current appetite for adventure-oriented SUVs; it does not make the Passport a Bronco clone.
MotorTrend reports that the 2026 TrailSport and TrailSport Elite have 18-inch wheels fitted with all-terrain tires, steel skid plates protecting the oil pan, transmission and fuel tank, and two front recovery points plus one at the rear. The recovery points are rated for twice the vehicle’s gross vehicle weight rating, according to MotorTrend. The trims also offer Trail, Snow and Sand drive modes.
MotorTrend reports that steel rock sliders and a full-size spare are available as dealer accessories; a compact spare is standard. The slider setup shown in its coverage leaves lower door areas exposed, so check the exact accessory’s fitment and coverage for your model year and trim before buying. Skid plates and recovery points are useful trail equipment, but they do not establish that the Passport is suited to every obstacle or extreme off-road route.

How the Passport TrailSport drives and what it can tow
Edmunds reports that the 2026 Passport uses a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 rated at 285 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and AWD. TrailSport models use 31-inch General Grabber A/T tires. Edmunds lists a 5,000-pound towing capacity, and Car and Driver reports that the TrailSport Elite’s integrated hitch is rated for 5,000 pounds.
Those specifications support the Passport’s dual role: it has equipment for unpaved routes, but retains a conventional V6-and-automatic setup for daily driving, passengers and cargo. Edmunds’ first-drive impressions came from routes in Puerto Rico that included dirt and sand. That drive is not evidence of a rock-crawling evaluation or a comprehensive comparison on difficult terrain.

Passport TrailSport vs. Ford Bronco: what is—and isn’t—similar?
The vehicles meet different needs. Edmunds characterizes the Passport as a road-friendly AWD SUV and the Bronco as a 4WD vehicle with removable roof options. Bronco engines are turbocharged in the comparison, and output varies by powertrain; there is no single Bronco horsepower figure that applies to every version. The Passport’s fixed body and AWD setup are not substitutes for the Bronco’s removable panels and 4WD-oriented configuration.

Edmunds’ cargo figures are ranges across configurations, not a guarantee that every Passport has more usable space than every Bronco; measurement method and trim can affect the comparison. Car and Driver describes the Passport as less capable on tough terrain than body-on-frame alternatives such as the Bronco or Toyota 4Runner. The available driving impressions support a distinction in intended use, not a claim that the Passport cannot handle any challenging trail.

Keep the 2026 and 2027 TrailSport specifications separate
Honda’s September 9, 2026 announcement describes changes for the 2027 Passport TrailSport, not the 2026 vehicle. Honda lists 9.65 inches of ground clearance for the 2027 model versus 8.27 inches for 2026, along with a 25-degree approach angle versus 23 degrees, a 25-degree departure angle versus 23 degrees, and a 23-degree breakover angle versus 20 degrees.
Honda says the 2027 TrailSport redesign changes nearly 70% of major suspension components and redesigns 28 suspension- and chassis-related parts. The 2027 model also adds TrailWatch as standard across TrailSport trims and a heated steering wheel. These updates should not be attributed to a 2026 Passport.

Honda also reports that TrailSport models accounted for over 80% of Passport model sales as of June 2026. That is Honda’s reported sales share, not an independently verified market statistic. Honda says its Honda Trail Experience app supports specified 2026 and 2027 Passport TrailSport, Pilot TrailSport and CR-V TrailSport models, with real-time vehicle data and video capture and overlays. Check current compatibility for the exact vehicle and app before relying on those features.
