A MotoGP Sprint is a separate, shorter race held on Saturday; the Grand Prix is the full-distance race on Sunday. Under the format used through 2026, Saturday qualifying sets the starting grid for both races, but the Sprint result does not change Sunday’s grid. The races also award different points: a Sprint winner earns 12, compared with 25 for a Grand Prix winner. MotoGP has announced separate qualifying sessions and grids for the two races from 2027.
At a glance: the Saturday Sprint versus Sunday’s Grand Prix
The Tissot Sprint is an additional championship race, not a warm-up or a qualifying heat. It takes place on Saturday afternoon and runs for approximately half the distance of the Sunday Grand Prix. The exact lap count and distance vary by circuit, so there is no single number of laps that defines a Sprint at every event.

| Difference | Tissot Sprint | Sunday Grand Prix |
|---|---|---|
| Usual race day | Saturday afternoon | Sunday afternoon |
| Race distance | Approximately half the Grand Prix distance; lap count varies by circuit | Full race distance for that event |
| Grid through 2026 | Set by Saturday Q1 and Q2 | Uses the same qualifying-derived grid as the Sprint |
| Points-paying places | First through ninth | First through 15th |
| Winner’s points | 12 | 25 |
| Grid plan from 2027 | Friday Sprint qualifying is planned to set a separate grid | Grand Prix qualifying is planned to set the Sunday grid |
These are differences in race format, not two names for the same contest. Riders score points in each event independently, and the shorter race has its own finishing order and result. A rider can therefore win or score heavily on Saturday and then have a separate result on Sunday.

How a typical MotoGP weekend is organized
MotoGP’s published premier-class schedule starts with two Friday practice sessions. Free Practice 1 lasts 45 minutes, followed by a 60-minute Practice session. The ten fastest riders in Friday Practice go directly to Q2. Every other rider must use Saturday’s Q1 session, where the two fastest also advance to Q2.

Saturday Q1 and Q2 establish the qualifying order in the format used through 2026. The Sprint is then held on Saturday afternoon, using that same grid. The full Grand Prix follows on Sunday afternoon and, under the same format, starts from the identical qualifying order. Practice, qualifying, the Sprint and the Grand Prix are separate sessions, even though qualifying links the two race grids.
This sequence explains why a Sprint should not be described as a qualifying race. A poor qualifier cannot use a good Sprint finish to move forward on Sunday. Conversely, a rider who qualifies near the front is guaranteed that starting advantage for both races, regardless of what happens in the Saturday contest.
How qualifying and the grid work through 2026
In the current format, Saturday’s qualifying session determines the starting order for both the Sprint and the Sunday Grand Prix. That means a rider’s qualifying performance—not the result of the Sprint—sets the Sunday starting position. A rider can finish the Sprint in a different place from where they started without that finish moving them up or down the Grand Prix grid.
How riders reach Q1 and Q2
The ten fastest riders in Friday Practice earn direct entry to Q2. The rest contest Q1 on Saturday; its two fastest advance to Q2. Q1 and Q2 then establish the qualifying order used for both races under the format in effect through 2026.
The Sprint is therefore not a second chance to qualify for Sunday, and its finishing order is not a substitute for Q1 or Q2. If a rider qualifies poorly but makes several passes in the Sprint, those passes improve the Sprint result and points total only. The rider still starts Sunday from the original qualifying position, subject to the normal race weekend procedures.
Grid procedure is not race duration
MotoGP’s official rules index records a 2025 update extending the Sprint grid procedure to 20 minutes, the same duration as the Grand Prix grid procedure. That is the time allowed for the grid procedure, not the time the race lasts and not a statement that the two races have equal distances. Race length remains governed by the circuit’s required lap count and the format’s approximate half-distance rule.
Points: how much each finish is worth
The Sprint awards points to its top nine finishers, while the Grand Prix awards points to its top 15. The Grand Prix win is worth more than twice as many points as a Sprint win, but a rider can add points from both races during one event. Winning both yields a maximum of 37 points across the weekend.

The table shows why a Sprint can matter to the championship without outweighing the main race. A rider who wins the Sprint and scores no Grand Prix points earns 12 points, fewer than the 25 available for winning Sunday with no Sprint score. Finishing positions can also combine in less obvious ways: second in the Sprint and fifth in the Grand Prix produces 20 points, while a Sunday win and no Sprint points produces 25.
Only the first nine Sprint finishers score. A rider who finishes tenth or lower receives no Sprint points, whereas tenth in the Grand Prix is worth six. That wider Sunday scoring range rewards consistency over the full-distance race, while the Sprint creates an extra opportunity for front-runners and riders fighting close championship margins.
What the 2024 title fight illustrates
MotoGP’s 2025 explainer reports that Jorge Martin scored 43 more Sprint points than Francesco Bagnaia over the 2024 season, while Bagnaia scored 33 more points in Sunday races. Martin ultimately won the championship by 10 points. These are season-specific totals, not a promise that Sprint points will decide every title. They demonstrate how an advantage earned in one race format can partly offset an advantage earned in the other.
Why the two races reward different approaches
A shorter race compresses the opportunity to recover. With roughly half the laps of the Grand Prix, a poor start or a position lost early leaves fewer chances to pass and make up ground. Riders have less time for the race to develop, so the opening phase and immediate position battles can carry greater practical importance. A rider who normally improves late in a race has fewer laps in which to do so.

It also requires riders to manage tyre wear and physical effort over a longer period. Decisions that preserve performance over the entire distance can matter more than an aggressive move that works for only a few laps.
These are broad tendencies, not guarantees for every circuit. Track layout, weather, grip, incidents and the competitive order can make either race unpredictable. The Sprint’s shorter distance does not eliminate strategy; it changes how quickly a mistake becomes difficult to repair. The Grand Prix’s extra laps create more opportunity, but they also expose riders and machines to longer periods of tyre and fuel management.
Fuel limits underline the distinction
MotoGP states a maximum fuel limit of 12 litres for the Sprint and 22 litres for the full MotoGP race. Those are rules limits, not claims that every motorcycle consumes exactly that amount at every event. The different limits reflect the different race distances and are another reason not to treat the Sprint as simply a shortened name for Sunday’s race.

How long is a MotoGP Sprint?
There is no universal Sprint lap count. The race is approximately 50% of the Grand Prix distance, and the circuit determines the number of laps and total distance. The same qualification applies when comparing Grand Prix length from one venue to another: the full race distance is event-specific.
For scale, MotoGP reported an average Sunday MotoGP race distance of 114.7 km for the 2024 season. It also reported an average winning time of 40 minutes 54 seconds for those Sunday races. Both are season averages published by MotoGP in 2025, not fixed distances or target times for every Grand Prix. They should not be used to calculate the length of a particular Sprint without that event’s lap and circuit information.
What changes in 2027
On 7 October 2026, MotoGP announced a planned schedule change for 2027 that separates the Sprint and Grand Prix grids. Under that plan, a 15-minute Sprint qualifying session takes place on Friday and sets the Sprint grid. Saturday includes a 20-minute FP3 followed by Grand Prix Q1 and Q2, which set the Sunday Grand Prix grid.
This ends the shared-grid arrangement described above. For a race under the current format, Saturday Q1 and Q2 set both grids. Under MotoGP’s announced 2027 plan, Sprint qualifying and Grand Prix qualifying produce distinct grids. A rider could therefore have different qualifying positions for Saturday and Sunday. The Sprint remains a race in either format, rather than a qualifying session for the Sunday event.
The date matters when reading older explanations or results. Carlos Ezpeleta, MotoGP’s chief sporting officer, described the original shared-grid approach by saying that Saturday qualifying would decide the grid for both races, allowing riders to race the Sprint without thinking about protecting Sunday’s grid position. That statement describes the pre-2027 arrangement. MotoGP’s 2027 announcement instead describes the goal as creating distinct grids for the Sprint and Grand Prix at every round.
How to read a MotoGP weekend as a viewer
- Check the season’s format. Through 2026, the two races share the grid set by Saturday Q1 and Q2. MotoGP’s announced 2027 plan separates the grids.
- Follow Friday practice. The ten fastest riders in Friday Practice go directly to Q2, while the rest must use Q1 to earn one of the remaining Q2 places.
- Keep the two results separate. Sprint finishing order determines Sprint points; it does not determine the Sunday starting order under the current format.
- Use the points table, not just the winner. The Sprint has nine scoring places and the Grand Prix has 15, so a rider’s points haul can differ significantly from the headline finish.
- Check the event schedule for distance. The Sprint is about half the full race distance, but actual lap counts depend on the circuit.
- Expect two independent championship opportunities. A rider can score in the Sprint, the Grand Prix, both or neither. The event maximum is 37 points for winning both.
MotoGP promotes VideoPass for live and on-demand viewing of sessions. It is a viewing option rather than part of the race rules, so check the service’s current availability and terms separately.

Can a rider score 37 points at one MotoGP event?
Yes. Winning both the Sprint and the Grand Prix produces the maximum combined total of 12 plus 25, or 37 points.
Is the Sprint always the same number of laps?
No. It is approximately half the Grand Prix distance, but the circuit determines the actual lap count and kilometres.
Which race is more important for the championship?
The Grand Prix is worth more points and has 15 scoring positions, so it remains the larger single opportunity. The Sprint can still be decisive when the championship margin is close, as the 2024 Martin-Bagnaia totals show.
What are the fuel limits?
MotoGP states a maximum of 12 litres for the Sprint and 22 litres for the full MotoGP race. These are limits, not guaranteed consumption figures.
